Called in sick
Jun. 21st, 2007 11:45 amI woke up at 8am this morning with a stomachache from hell. Why? I have no clue. All I know is, I hate the possibility of it being caused by food that was delicious and that I love to eat whenever I get the chance. In this case, it's either the Chinese food I ordered after work yesterday (when I met Grandpa at Vons) or the Blueberry Morning cereal I had for a late dessert while I was watching a Sailor Moon S marathon.
(By the way,
smrffers-- Usa Day *WILL* start next week, and I might even contribute something for it if I can get my brain churning. I'm already thinking of some articles for the SM-section of Epiphany, which I really want to get live before the end of summer.)
So I called in sick, because I'd gone to bed with a horrid headache, and the slightest tinges of it were telling me it was going to come back. And it did. I went back to sleep and woke up again (around 10:30 or 11) feeling like someone had partially chopped my head open (think headband-style). I kept touching my head thinking I was going to find some disjointed part of my skull where I could just reach in and touch my BRAIN! Eew. Shudder-twitch-EEW!
So I'm still feeling kind of ill (want to eat, but something tame-- maybe Cream of Wheat with just raisins and some cinnamon?), and almost scared to go back to sleep even though my head is pounding-- I mean, what the hell prompts dreams about getting beheaded improperly? (Does this have something to do with my wanting to go to Egypt and everyone in my family always saying "No, not this year, you'll get your head chopped off!"?)
Speaking of Egypt, yesterday I got my copy of "Pharaoh Gold" (which includes the Queen of the Nile: Cleopatra expansion) yesterday, and I tried to install it-- it seemed to work okay, but I couldn't run the game, even with either CD in the drive. I didn't get an error or anything-- nothing came up. There was an hourglass, then nothing, just an arrow sitting there all "Dur, what you want me to do?" So I figured, maybe there were some remnants from the copy of the game I had (the single CD version that was all scratched up-- a U.S. edition, I should note, because the Pharaoh Gold copy is from the U.K.), so I removed the new program, edited the registry to remove all data about the OLD game. I made sure it took effect in the Add/Remove programs list, and then re-installed Pharaoh Gold when I got home.
...Still nothing. I thought it was odd that my Windows drive was saying it was about 8GB when I clearly specified in Parallels for it to be expanding up to 15GB, and all these damn "Low on disk space!" errors were getting on my nerves, so I searched the forums, discovered Parallels 3 no longer has Image Tools (which you would use to resize the virtual disk image after you'd created it and put stuff on it), so I had to use this other DOS-based tool to do it. So I did, and I also defragged the drive... but still, NOTHING, even after the defrag (not the Windows one, either-- a much more intensive one I found a 30-day trial for) proclaimed my drive "healthy."
I click on the game icon in the start menu, my Games shortcut folder, or in the Recently-Used programs list, and NOTHING HAPPENS. No error, no pop-up, no nothing. Just a brief arrow-with-hourglass, and then NOTHING. >_<
HEEEELP! What do I do?

MOONIES, REUNITE!
Jul. 5th, 2006 06:03 pmThis is mainly directed to
smrffers, but any other SM fan is welcome to answer... and heck knows there's a wide network of people on here from SMRFF that aren't on/don't know about the LJ group, or haven't/don't want to friend other/former SMRFFers here on LJ. Nonetheless, if you know them, pass it on; I'd love to hear opinions from all across the board:
It is interesting to compare Mamoru's portrayal in the manga, where he is very affectionate and romantic, and clearly cares for Usagi a great deal. It seems to have been a conscious change to make him less so for the anime, but I do wonder why it was done. --Chris Kern, AFSM 7/5/06
I actually kind of agree with Chris' assessment. Mamoru's a downright jerk in the anime, and I've always thought so, but if I had to pick a canon to work with for the rest of my ficcing career (however long that is), I'd always pick the anime. Mamoru is more FUN in the anime I think, because he's not some two-dimensional perfect prince who can always snap out of it at the last minute, always save the day, always summon some magical strength, etc. etc. Even though I cursed colorful words at him (or should I say, "Darien") when I watched the dub of Episode 61 (Usagi is shocked! Mamoru wants to break up!/The Cosmetic Caper) on YouTube yesterday, the very concept of him breaking up with her BECAUSE OF DESTINY (the very thing which brought them together in the first place) just opens up a world of possibility, and speaks volumes about his character.
But it's well known that they don't exactly plan everything out to a tee when it comes to the anime, which explains a multitude of inexplicable facts, things that don't pan out with the manga canon, etc. Understandably, it's due (at least in part) to the manga being slower to release, hence the filler arcs. SuperS bombed ratings-wise, so Toei was taking a big chance with Stars, doing their best to keep it in line with the manga, but still be original and surprising. So when it comes to changing Mamoru's personality so utterly, is it a good thing, or a bad thing?
Are there factions for his "counterparts," as in "I hate anime!Mamoru, but manga!Mamoru is teh hawt!" or "PGSM!Mamoru is teh hawt!"? Which Mamoru is your favorite version, and why? Do you think his different characterizations/traits/personality alter the way he deals with Usagi, and how the series pans out?
For the record, I went home sick today, slept from 10:30am to about 2pm, woke up to see my newly-installed REMOTE-CONTROLLED ceiling fan, and then went grocery shopping. Now, I have to rough-sketch the painting I want to make for my mom, because I've been procrastinating on that, just like on everything else. :P

I am now the proud owner of a Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon! Whoo!
rhapsody_dragon, get ready to duel! My dragon deck is getting an official overhaul now, and I'm gonna pwn you! And I can't wait till next month, when I get Exchange of the Spirits and I can make either an Isis deck or an Egypt deck!
And I've also gotten into the Christmas spirit at last-- I suppose it makes sense, given that things are going pretty good, it's freezing cold, and I want presents. :P So I want everyone to point me in the direction of Seto x Anzu Christmas fics so I can make a post on
setoanzulove and at Blue Eyes and Apricots. So far, I know of two submitted on
yuugiouxmasfic:
* From Socks to Shoelace-tan
* From Mickle to Socks
But the second one isn't all that Christmas-themed...
What else? I might not have done 100% as well on my Japanese test this morning, but I did get my letters of recommendation for both Waseda and Tokiwa; I have to get Blumenkrantz's letter for Tokiwa, finish up my essays, have Hirota-sensei check them out before Dec. 8th, and then have them turned in and ready by then! ^_^v I'm getting all excited!
I think I did well on my mythology exam today, even though I missed 2 classes within the past week or so. But I guess I'm just well-versed in mythology, so I'm not too worried about missing much on the exams. They're always so easy...
( I'm walkin' in a spider web... )
Another email exchange:
smrffers might know about the people that dare to write sequels to the infamous Sexylyon's SEXY (of course) "Interlude" Usagi x Mamoru first season hentai. It was one of the best fics I've ever read (when I first read it), even if upon re-reading, some parts were purple enough to color my world. Nonetheless, even when people get permissions to write said sequels, taking the original author's so-called style and mocking it is enough to peeve me into next week. And when fangirl Japanese is thrown in? Ugh...
( The fic: Togewonuku. The author: Arashinobara Jikkankakyoku. As if that doesn't tell you everything right there. )
I have the opportunity to go to Egypt next summer... whether or not the whole Japan Study Abroad thing pans out. I think it'd be a great opportunity to get additional travel in, though it does cost $2747, which is likely the bulk of my financial aid check for either Spring 2006 or Fall 2006. But it's only a $95 reservation, and if I really wanted to pull that off, I could, especially with some sucking up to my mom (^^;) Alas, the cost DOES NOT include:
* $570 room supplement if 23 years of age or you turn 23 before or during the tour (huh?)
* non-cruise lunches, beverages, and tips (estimated at $125 per person)
* private bus fee (depending on the size of the group, up to $145)
* CSUN tuition and fees (paid for, no worries there)
* mandated travel insurance and books (only applies to students earning 6 units of credit).
Well, of course I would want to earn the 6 units of credit; 3 from the Independent Study unit in Spring (would bring my total up to 18 units, just under my cap of 15. I don't know what the course would count for-- maybe upper division something-or-other?) and 3 from the tour in Summer.
Anyway, I have to think about tomorrow... er, a dialogue for memorization for Lesson 9 (memorize in the morning, like always), and possibly a critique to do for Creative Writing (which I can do during the break up in collaboratory; I can bring my laptop to work on my PowerPoint and Study Abroad essays as well, since it's an hour and a half long break... if/when I need to print, I can just email it to myself or something, unless Scott gives me back my flashcard by tomorrow).
Finally, sometimes after the insanity dies down this week (likely Thursday or later), I'm planning on:
* Updating WikiFic with more of Viz's insane translation (and other) errors from the latest Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist volumes, plus Millennium World Vol. 1
* Making a winter-themed layout for whatever I feel like (BEA or Dragonfayth)
* Posting Girl's Club (Seto x Anzu; #11: gardenia) for
30kisses, along with the tentatively titled Red/Like A Virgin (#19: red).
* Making some more edits to WDKY22 and seeing if
luvinaoshi and any other beta volunteers have anything to say about it...
And I've also gotten into the Christmas spirit at last-- I suppose it makes sense, given that things are going pretty good, it's freezing cold, and I want presents. :P So I want everyone to point me in the direction of Seto x Anzu Christmas fics so I can make a post on

I practice what I preach
Sep. 26th, 2005 11:33 amOkay, so it turns out that:
a) I have to finish up all my online courses at DriversEdDirect.com before I can take any behind-the-wheel courses
b) I can't get a license without first getting a permit, which I have to take a written exam for... which is likely going to be based on everything I learn when I finish the online courses.
So I have to finish all my online lessons before I can do ANYTHING. X_X more studying. Ugh.
But damn it all, I AM GOING TO HAVE MY LICENSE BY DECEMBER 31st!!!!
*ahem*
Now, before I head off to Mythology class today, I would like to say:
(1) I mourn for Alicia Blade. I really do. Maybe it was my age, my mind-set, or some internal Fangirl Gene that made me adore her, but... this newest fic of hers leaves me in an absolute stupor. IT SUCKS. It could be worse, granted, but I find it very hard to compare it to her older works (not that I've read any lately, so I'm really comparing it to what I remember, on the assumption that they're still good and I wasn't imagining things) and not cringe. I wish I could be the honest reviewer who doesn't use a Swedish Ego Enlarger on her, but something in me doesn't want to be the brat of the SM fandom, all over again. ^^;
(2) I am in need of some damn good hentais. Het, please, because I'm going to take my first baby steps into writing more "adult" fanfic. Violence, language, and angst I've got down- and
kitesareevil, do you remember when I thought I couldn't write angst to save my life? *grins* Well, I think I'm pretty good at it now... *cough* Anyway, so I figure, I'll practice what I preach and do some research. I know there are steamy/lemony fics out there that I enjoyed, but now I want to re-read them and find out WHY I enjoyed them, so I can try that style for myself.
I'd especially love any lemons (or as we used to call them way the hell back when "sekkushuru romans" a term which made me think of very long white candles) from the Yu-Gi-Oh fandom. Jounouchi x Mai, Yuugi x Anzu, whatever. Seto x Anzu would best, since that IS the pairing I'm writing for... *smirks* Atlantis, Kysra? Be aware, I'm going to assault your Memories and be doing intensive research on this subject.
World, watch out-- here I come! Bwahaha.
