But thank you~~!!!

Date: 2005-04-16 10:34 pm (UTC)Wow... it's quite obvious that your little summary was written by an American that knows jack shiht about JP culture. This was perhaps the best example of idiotic japophilism in the past couple months that i've come across. Only to accompany how you act elitist towards others made it that much better.
I need to yell at Joe.
WTF
Date: 2005-04-16 11:40 pm (UTC)Oh, and any decent writer and editor will tell you to back up your claims with some proof. If you're going to accuse me of your [fake word ahead] "japophilism" then at least explain how I did so.
By the way-- I was just saying what was happening-- I wasn't writing an editorial, criticizing PJT or its tour guides, or anything. I'm not part of a magazine or newspaper staff, and I sure as hell wasn't writing for YOUR benefit.
If you don't like what I have to say, get lost, go Google something that might be more to your interest.
As for whether or not I know about Japanese culture, no, I don't know a lot, but I know more than the average American, and I certainly know more than the rest of the people on my tour, repeat tourists and tour guides aside.
How did I act elitist, pray tell? I don't exclude anyone from anything I say or do unless they explicitly make me uncomfortable. When they did, I made it a point to back off, or otherwise inform them that they were upsetting me.
In summary:
* Stop butchering the English language by making up words and forgetting to spell-check.
* Back up your claims with proof
* Stop being cowardly and say who the hell you are before you attack me in my personal space
* Do it on the right post next time, not a birthday post, you nitwad
* How the hell did you read my posts anyway? You're sure as hell not on my FL.
* And if Joe was the one that showed the post to you, he needs to ditch you, because you're far from the kind of friend he needs.
* Oh yes, try going to your nearest KMart and GET A LIFE.
Re: WTF
Date: 2005-04-17 12:00 am (UTC)Japophile isn't butchering the English language, it's quite common practice use when dealing with people who think they know of Japanese culture. Technically, using words like "manga" and "anime" are butchering the English language, and if you want to argue that, I will love to. I can provide the reasonings through, an English major, a Japanese speaker, as well as provide the reasonings of a Linguistics major. BUT that's not the point here is it.
"How did I act elitist, pray tell?"
"I know more than the average American"
I beg to differ. Perhaps the average American, but not the average American that knows anything about Japanese culture. You fit into a simple group that thinks they know of JP culture because of what the read in comic books and see in cartoons. That is hardly knowing JP culture at all. In many ways that's worse than knowing nothing because you have a false presumption of what the culture is compared to having no understanding, hence, a completely open mind.
I'm far from the kind of friend Joe needs? That's kinda funny... really... it is. Though I don't expect you to understand why.
You know, if I wanted to reply on the right post, it wouldn't have been on this name. I don't believe in pretending to be who i'm not and am more comfortable posting as me. It's not hard to figuire out who I am, if you even bothered to look at my LJ. It's not like I tried to hide who I am.
I have to deal like people like you alllllllllllll the time, and it gets quite annoying. You're so over zealous with your thoughts that you can't bear the fact that someone else might know what they're talking about. The same response every time "Well I don't care, it's what I like". Wow, long reply to a damned LJ entry. Some advice if you're gonna bother reply. Learn what you're dealing with. Ask Joe really, he's not the best person to ask, but he knows the gist of what I am.
Re: WTF
Date: 2005-04-17 12:36 am (UTC)1 - I saw nothing whatsoever on your journal to indicate who you are or what your relation [to me] was. I noticed we had all of 2 mutual friends, Helen and Grace, and that was it. It told me nothing.
2 - Using words like "anime" and "manga" is not butchering the Japanese language or the culture- they are part of it just as much as "burger" and "fries" are part of the "American" culture. I know how to pronounce them too (I don't say "cartoons" and "comic books" in reference to them; I find them completely different things.)
Again, stop butchering the English language by neglecting punctuation and using excuses for not providing proof. Either do it or don't.
I know lots of "average Americans" and some not so average. They have presumptions about Japanese culture that make even me laugh. Many of the people on the tour were the same, in various ways. The whole reason why we went in the first place was to further our understanding of the people and the culture, not to be accused of being elitist or even more blinded.
My views on the Japanese culture are based on much more than anime and manga. Not only have I read countless books and spoken to hundreds of people, but I've BEEN there, I've immersed myself in it. I've studied it almost religiously. I plan to continue on doing so.
True, I was very upset when I initially replied and no, I don't know anything about you as a boyfriend or friend or otherwise, but I've known Joe for a long time, and your initial attitude gave me the presumption that you were the sort of rash critical type that makes for a bad influence on other people. I care for Joe deeply, and I would hate to see him doubt himself and his actions because someone was being unfairly cruel to him. I don't know whether you do this or not, but I'll say this: my first impression of you was very bad. Maybe you don't care one way or the other, but bring my friends into the mix, and it becomes personal business.
If you're saying that the current SN you're on is on my FL, at least come forward and say so in order that I may de-friend you immediately. I don't like your attitude, and frankly I have no interest or desire to share my life or read about yours with someone so unnecessarily mean.
By the way, there are no "people like me." I'm me, I'm the only one of me in the universe, so don't label me or slap some generalization of me based on what you may have heard from other people or what strange impressions you might garner from my posts.
My Japan posts were intended as being purely reflective, talking about my experiences and nothing more. I made no generalizations about the Japanese people or culture.
Contrary to your belief, I do care, otherwise I would have banned your IP and reported you as a troll to the admins the first time I saw your answer. But in fact, I'm actually trying to sort this out in a mature, humane way.
I'm not using l33t caps or weird coding, and I'm not sinking to the level of a troll.
Re: WTF
Date: 2005-04-17 06:57 am (UTC)Technically, using words like "manga" and "anime" are butchering the English language
I said ENGLISH language, not Japanese. It is butchering the English language because the English language has 100% equivalents of these words, yet you still choose to use the Japanese words. Now, one can argue that "well Japanese Manga are different than comics and Japanese Anime are different than cartoons". Which is actually complete and utter bull shit. Bread is bread whether or not it comes from Japan or America. Rice is Rice whether or not it comes for Vietnam or Germany. So why would you use a Japanese word in English speech when there is more than an English equivalent for it?
Well... I'm glad you know people who make you laugh with their thoughts on Japan. Guess what, yours make me laugh. Yours make me see how ignorant you are. From what I've heard, your trip wasn't to further your understanding, it was to indulge in your fandom.
You've read countless books, and talked to people, then took a trip there. Congratulations, it doesn't shohw at all. You speak on the same level as random anime kiddies that watch cartoon network. ^^
Uhm, I said I could log on to a different name, but I prefer 'MY' name. Wouldn't logic presume thaht the other login isn't mine?
There are many people 'LIKE' you, but no one exactly like you. You aren't a generalization, but you are an example that fits into a group, there is a huge difference. Label you? Welcome to the real world. People are simular. We've made a science out of it, so it's presumed that people are similar enough to be categorized, judged and reasoned under, why would you be any different?
Well I never said you didn't care, and I'm hardly a troll. Everything I say has a basis and reasoning behind it. I'm not just calling you "a stupid bitch that doesn't know anything" then running away. So the troll bit doesn't work. So this calling me a troll crap isn't getting you any where.
Re: WTF
Date: 2005-04-17 05:52 pm (UTC)Damn! I feel like a idiot, I'm going to stop reading "comic books" and watching "cartoons" and get a real job and boyfriend and hang at the mall. Oh look, Dragonball Z is on cartoon network... let's watch!!
Re: WTF
Date: 2005-04-18 01:18 am (UTC)There are plenty of words in this oh-so-rock solid language that have been adapted from other cultures. An example you ask? 'Angst.' It's a German word with a %100 English counter-part: Fear.
Now, would it seem odd to read a book in the genre of 'fear?' The word was assimilated into the language and is accepted by many as an English word, despite it being a true German word.
There are many other examples of this if you look around you. I believe 'anime' and 'manga' qualify as such words. Their popularity has grown to a scale that the terms have been brought into the language.
The English language is always adapting. Like the word 'ain't'-- it was used so commonly it's been accepted.
I don't see what the point of this criticism is, especially when it's merely someone's opinion. As I see from this, your personality resembles that of a troll, so she was not at fault by using the term.
Re: WTF
Date: 2005-04-18 01:28 am (UTC)Angst doesn't translate to fear. It has a general appliance that includes fear, but it does not mean fear. That's like saying Karaoke means to sing. It has the outside context, but not the meaning. Anime = animated film, animated motion picture. Anime... French word of origin. Japanese adopted word. French word "anime" is exact equivalent of US cartoon. Therefore JP word "anime" is exact equivalent of US "cartoon". Even if you're going to say "well anime is a specific genre", it's not, because by defenition you would have to include French style animation in that category then since the French word is one in the same. Then, you cannot call Korean animation "anime" since there word is different(which escapes me at the time but if you really MUST know i'll get it later).
"Ain't" isn't commonly accepted. It is commonly understood, there's a big difference there.

wow I'm banned... how pathetic

Your claim is based purely on opinion and assumption-- there is no fact. Therefore JP word "anime" is exact equivalent of US "cartoon". In the same way smokers waste their money on that which will kill them, you are wasting your time on something that will never result in success. Seriously dude, get a life and do something else with your time-- the few minutes or whatever you've spent here might be better spent on Helen.

So in other words, to that moron that, while critisizing Mer's writing has used much slang (as in "gonna"), you (the moron) needs to seriously get a life and stop maligning good people with a bunch of bullshit.
And one more thing: before making a judgement of how Mer behaved on the trip, you should read the posts, instead of just 'hearing of them' through some 3rd party.
