Hm, being THAT bored on the Internet, and only slightly tired, I decided to check out the SFSU General Education reequirements page. Is it too presumptuous for me to want to plan everything out now, when I'm not even sure if I've been accepted (even though everyone going there says it's a given that I will get in)? So... yeah.

I'm not sure if I did everything right, though. They don't make things very easy to understand. I guess I have to check out all these course descriptions and see. I haven't seen anything that explains what AERM or LLD means though. Can any Gator out there help me out?

Before I can take any English courses, I have to take the placement test. Not to sound cocky, but I'm pretty sure I can get a 151 or better on it. Or at least, I hope so. I haven't gotten THAT out of practice, right? ^^; Well, assuming I do get 151 or better, I get into English Composition 114, with 3 units required (I guess that means they have to meet at least 3 times a week or something?).

For Oral Communication, it's SPCH 150. Critical Thinking's "Writing Logically (ENG 200)" sounds interesting enough... and for math (AUGH!) I suppose Elementary Statistics (MATH 124).

Then there's this whole big blob of things for physical and biological sciences (PBS!) -- I picked:
Food Chemistry Fundamentals (Lab) - CHEM 110 -- I changed this to a lab, since I need one lab course here.
The World of Plants - BIOL 150 -- This way I don't have to dissect anything, right?
Mythic & Scientific Thought - NEXA 281 -- and, finishing off the categories (A, B, and C, with 3 units of each course listed) is something interesting-- but I can't take it until I take the other two. And I have to have at least TWO different departments intersparsed throughout the A, B, and C categories-- which I do. CHEM, BIOL, and NEXA. :)

Let's see... for Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSS) I picked--
A: Anthropology of Women -- ANTH/CST 590 ; WOMS 595
B: Introduction to World Affairs -- IR/SS 104
C: Leisure and Contemporary Society -- REC 420 -- Sounds interesting enough... picked it just now. @_@ But *stifles a giggle* "Lesiure" and "420?" Am I reading between the lines too much? This is California...

For Humanities and Creative Arts, I have 5 possible categories to choose from. It says in the requirements, "If elected, a minimum of two units should be selected in HCA Categories B and D." I guess that means if I *want* to, I can pick a course that has two units in Cats. B and D. Which is no problem, as you'll see below...

A: Greek and Roman Mythology - CLAS 360 (FOR SURE!!)

B: Life on TV: A Critical View - BECA 201

  • Science Fiction and Fantasy - ENG 616

C: Journalism and the Mass Media - JOUR 200 (OF COURSE!)

D: Intro to Creative Writing - CW 101 (HEHE ^_^)

  • Ballet I - DANC 163 (Surprised? So am I)

  • Some choir course (there's Basic Music: Voice; Singing for Self-Expression; University Chorus, Women's Chorus, and Chamber Chorus. I don't know about any prereqs for the latter 3)

E: Japanese 102/103 - I'm not sure which one I qualify for, according to university standards. I know I'm not supposed to be in Elementary Japanese, that's for sure-- I already know Hiragana, Katakana, and a good deal of kanji... but not a LOT of kanji. So... I don't know where that puts me. Since it's a daily course though, it counts as 5 units! Whee! I could also try my hand at Japanese Reading/Grammar or Modern Japanese Fiction. =)

Likewise, I've shown an interest in the roots of language, in Latin! It's also a daily course, though... and I'd have to take Elementary Latin. =P So am I biting off more than I can chew yet?

The rest of the GenEds can't be fulfilled until you achieve junior year status though. *sigh* So that's it. Any commentary from the collegiates reading this? I'd like to know? *twitters nervously*

how you doing mer, this is rod, i'm a friend of will's.

take it from a 6th year (that's right, 6th year!) student at SFSU, genEd can be a bitch sometimes. especially now with all these budget cuts, sometimes you may have to wait a whole year to take a course because it may or may not be available for the semester.

1 unit equals 1 hour of class you'll be taking. 3 units doesn't really mean that you have to meet at least 3 times a week. you could take a 3 unit course and just meet once a week for 3 hours.

well it seems like you got everything nicely planned out though, scheduling your first semester shouldn't be a problem for you.

spch 150 is really a no brainer for freshmen to enroll in. try to get that class early because it's a highly demanded class for not just freshmen but all students. so if you end up skipping it you're freshmen, chances are that you won't be taking that class till you reach senior status because of the registration priority, which is: athletes, freshmen, transfers, seniors, juniors and finally sophomores.

yeah being a 2nd year student sucks because you're at the bottom of the priority list. so getting classes can really be a bitch. my only suggestion for you is that if you plan on taking big classes your first year, it'd be best to save them for your 2nd year because they're easy to get into.

for biology, you don't dissect anything really. i suggest just taking bio 100 and then take the lab (bio 101) both classes are fairly easy. they'll fulfill your LLD.

if you do decide to bio 100, it's a prerequisite to taking some of the most interesting classes at sfsu, the human sexuality classes. i'm actually taking the human sexuality cluster for my segment III. bio 330, human sexuality, is a fun course and an easy class because you get to do a group project using condoms to make an artistic sculpture of well....use your imagingation. and the most controversial class is hmsx 450, variations in human sexuality, which i call porn 101. this is class i really interesting, hell, the first week we were analyzing hentai. the class is mostly panels but you get to learn about peoples experiences with not just sex but other things like monogamy, swinging, kinky sex. they're called 'coming out' panels because people in the class are revealing themselves to the public. what tripped me out was when the transgender panel came on, and i saw my friend in there and said that she used to be a man, i was trippin because i had no idea. oh, and this class is most known for showing the notorious beastiality videos. interesting huh.

i think i've spoken too much already. so yeah, if you have anymore questions regarding sfsu just send me a message or IM me: rodprime79

well, to be honest, after going to sfsu for so long, even i still don't know what they mean. however, i do know that for the LLD you have to take a science class and for the AERM you have to take a history class.

what i mean by big classes are classes that usually take place in lecture halls and have an enrollment of more than 100 students, some examples are psy 200, cj 300, biol 100, biol 330, tha 406. you could find out the size of your classes by looking at the online class schedule.

for my sophmore year i took general psychology (psy 200), human sexuality (biol 330), the art of comedy (tha 406), and meteorology 100 just to name a few. all big classes.

since biol 330 is an easy class, i suggest that you actually wait on that till you're at junior status so you can take that for your seg III, that is if you choose to do the human sex cluster which includes that sexual variations class (biol 456). but you could still take it earlier for segment II if you need a class to enroll in.

don't worry about the questions, i'm down to always help out new students. laterz.
