My name is Meredith Sweet, and I'm an avid reader of a variety of Tokyopop titles. I'd like to say congratulations on producing such an incredible array of titles and genres, and continuing to be a success and evolving after so many years!
I do have some comments on your manga. While I ADORE Tokyopop for bringing titles to my attention that I otherwise wouldn't have known about, there are parts about your mangas that I feel need to be addressed.
First, addressing my favorite currently-produced Tokyopop manga-- Peach Girl. I realize that PG hasn't been finished yet in Japan, but I wonder why TP seems in such a rush to come out with volumes each month? I watched the series come out from the beginning, starting with the small pocket-sized volumes labeled "Chix Comix." It disappointed me that the quality of the paper changed by volume 3, and artwork was rearranged and in some cases, recolored. I hated to think that I was paying $10 for something that wasn't as high quality as a $5.50 Japanese manga. Also, many of the Japanese sound effects and text were left in place-- I realize that in the beginning of PG, the "Right-to-Left Authentic Manga" format was not yet established, but every time I see Japanese left in a TP manga, I can't help but think that it was rushed or left incomplete. Readers can't truly enjoy the manga if Japanese nuances, even onomatopoeia/sound effects, remain untranslated. It's also very artistically tacky, in my opinion, to have tiny text translations near said sound effects, or worse, a glossary in the back of the book. It's not as if readers who don't understand Japanese will know how it's pronounced, and thus associate something like 'nyan' with 'meow.' The same applies to putting footnotes on most pages, or a sound effects glossary by-the-numbers in the back of the book.
Also, still speaking of Peach Girl, I saw it as entirely unnecessary to rename the series, even though it was the start of the Peach Girl series being done in the Authentic Manga format. The new system confused many readers, especially considering the numbering completely changed-- not to mention the size of the books, the fonts used...! This was very evident, as I spent nearly a month telling readers on the various PG mailing lists I am on what was really happening in the manga. Spelling errors and translation errors also get to me-- such as the running mistake of Sae's last name being 'Sasaki.' It has never EVER been Sasaki, and I don't understand why such a mistake was made. The same applies to Toji being considered a given name, rather than what it really is-- a surname. He is Kazuya Tojigamori, and since Japanese culture dictates that last names are said first, out of respect, his nickname is a shortening of his family name. He has never been Toji Tojigamori, nor Toji Tojikamori. Both of these are cited as mistakes printed in Tokyopop volumes of Peach Girl. And the model nicknamed "Gigolo" (Jigoro) is really Ouji Gorou-- and when his name is said in Japanese, surname first, with the beginning 'ou' sound removed, you get 'Jigorou' or 'Gigolo.' Essentially, the nickname is a pun on his name, and wans't given to him because he *is* a gigolo.
Though this isn't as an annoying a mistake, it also incorrect to have Momo referring to Kiley as "Kiley" when, consistently up to the current volume 16, she has referred to him respectfully by his last name, Okayasu. Were she to actually refer to him by his first name, it would demonstrate a significant change in their relationship-- that she really did accept her closeness to him. She hasn't done that yet, despite all the whirlwind changes she's been through with everyone.
The one thing I would love to see in Tokyopop manga is what I already see in Japanese manga, published by hundreds of companies-- from Kodansha to Margaret, Ribon to Shonen Sunday. A constant size. It seems as though no new Tokyopop manga are ever the same-- whether it's in page size, print contrast, or quality. The reason why I choose to buy Japanese manga over the translated editions is because it stays more true-- to the original artwork (excluding sound effects), the original author's notes, and the original text. I don't see why anything (non-story) has to be changed merely because it's being published in English. It *is* nice to see current updates from authors-- I understand that many series are quite old. I can say that TP, in contrast to other manga publishers, does seem to choose a wider variety of titles of shorter lengths, but with the constant changes being made, it's hard to keep up with what comes out when, and whether it's worth buying.
A singular font would be nice as well-- Peach Girl's horrific all-caps font was irritating, but now it's an almost kid-styled font-- why not stick to something simple and legible, used by comic book artists and digitial translators (scanlators) everywhere? Something universal, perhaps, like DigitalStrip? While it's cool to have interesting and expressive designs solely belonging to TP, it's not necessary to alter the design or artwork of the manga just to get the font to fit, or the words to be legible. All Japanese manga use the same fonts-- even when making sound effects. Once in a while you'll see specially printed fonts for "spooky" or "magical" words, and often mangaka draw in their own sound effects (such as in CLAMP's Magic Knight Rayearth-- how many revisions has it undergone, now?). But it's unnecessary to show off TP's fontophiles-- we just want to read manga. Plenty of fans can get by just fine with a copy of the original Japanese and reading along text translations. It's hard to do, and a pain when it comes to finding certain Japanese editions, so this is why I write to you, an excellent publisher. But it's not like improvement is a bad thing, nor impossible.
Switching to another title, INVU, I want to address how happy I am that you've brought manhwa to English speaking audiences! :D But a LOT of Korean has been left in the volumes, and in Volume 3, you inexplicably change the spelling of one of the characters (Rea/Ria)! Color me confused! Unlike Japanese, I can't read Korean, so I'm feeling lost and confused when reading sound effects. Yes, I'm sure you think, "Can't you just imagine what it means by looking at the panels in context?" but-- not all the time. And it's not that easy to infer every little word. Worse, when entire speech bubbles are left blank, I'm wondering what has been said that might have been important! I've noticed this in EVERY volume of INVU so far! And, on the back of volume 1, you spell 'Hali' as 'Halli,' though it is not once spelled that way inside! And the preview you give in the back of the volume isn't accurate (for volume 2 to volume 3) as far as I've read; we never do find out what happens to Rea/Ria or if her modeling career is discovered, as you said she would in the end of volume 2!
I've made a few brief notes on some other TP titles that have caught my eye--
Brain Powered-- Why did you change the spelling of the title? I know the original did *not* have a second 'e' in the title-- it was called 'Brain Powerd.' I saw this was how you had spelled it in the release list in many of your manga, so I'm wondering why you changed it upon the final release. There was a reason for it being spelled that way originally, was there not?
CLAMP - I'm thrilled that you guys are bringing so much of CLAMP's wonderful works to English audiences! But since I'm limited to submitting 3 titles that I hope to be licensed, I wonder if any of CLAMP's most recent works, namely the crossovers XXXholic and Tsubasa, will make it into Tokyopop fame?
Faerie's Landing - I realize this title hasn't been released yet, but just browsing the TP info pages has got my information piqued. You change the name from 'Ryan' to 'Ryang,' -- and I read the bottom indicating that this title was originally a manhwa-- so shouldn't the names be kept the same? Likewise, shouldn't the spelling of faerie? It is approproate to spell it 'faerie' as you have in the title, whether it is plural or not. Changing it to 'fairy' changes the connotation, and people might get the impression of Cinderella's "fairy" godmother, or the 3 "fairies" from Sleeping Beauty. The faeries presented in Asian mythology are nothing of the sort, and Fanta doesn't seem like that type, either.
The Vision of Escaflowne - I understand that this title was originally written in two versions-- the one you have chosen to publish is the "shonen" oriented version, which drastically alters Hitomi's character and the story of Escaflowne. I wonder if you will also publish the more shoujo-oriented version, aimed more towards girls, which I believe held more true to the original Escaflowne storyline presented in the animated TV series. Please do publish it, it has fantastic art and would have all your bases covered!
Sailor Moon - I'm fairly sure that Tokyopop is aware that Naoko Takeuchi is rereleasing Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon in an updated, 12-volume format, with revised artwork and touch-ups. I hope that despite any complications that might arise with Kodansha, English fans will be able to see a revised version of Sailormoon! For once, all the mistakes found in the "Mixx" editions can be repaired all in one! Usagi Tsukino should remain USAGI Tsukino, not Bunny and not Serena-- after all, you've kept many other Japanese character names the same, even if name changes exist for them. I'd hope the same is true of Sailormoon. And, for all rights and purposes, it should be titled 'Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon' or, as the live-action series is being called, 'Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon.' The artwork contrast should be kept in mind (several volumes had very black pages), and it can be released in the Authentic Manga format! With only 12 volumes, Tokyopop wouldn't have to worry about breaking up the series into 'arcs,' as was attempted before (and horribly butchered the series, by the way, since the manga does NOT follow the anime seasons AT ALL!-- after all, you didn't bother to divide up Sailor Moon from what WOULD have been Sailormoon R Part 2, Sailormoon Super... and for some bizarre reason, Stars had a capitalized S at the ending). Lastly, a revision of the series would mean ensuring that pages weren't cut off as before, mistranslated (Dark Kingdom and Negaverse, Shields and Chiba, etc.) -- as a matter of fact, on your Sailor Moon info page, it says Luna informs "Bunny" that she is a princess from the future-- uh NO! She's from 1000 years from the past, and Luna doesn't INFORM her of this at all-- it's quite the shocking discovery in the 2nd/3rd volumes! I sincerely hope to see the rereleases of Sailor Moon part of Tokyopop's upcoming line, so I could update my entire collection!
Zodiac P.I. - In the first volume, I noticed that Lili had been mispelled in the back of the volume as 'Riri.' I understand that the girl's name is Japanese, and thus could be interpreted as either, but since you've chosen to call her 'Lili,' I suggest sticking with it EVERYWHERE! And since 'Lili' is her real name, it makes no sense for certain people to address her as Spica, when they don't know that Lili and Spica are one and the same! This has happened in several places throughout volume 1 and 2, and warrants a better editing job.
Well, I've gone for long enough now. Thank you for taking the time to read my comments and sometimes harsh opinions, but I do love Tokyopop and hope you guys continue to publish a variety of fantastic and well-translated manga from around the globe!

I'm reading up on Nancy Drew, and it has come to my surprise that the entire series has been rewritten! NANI!? The editions I have are 1960/1988 editions that I got brand-new from Costco many years ago. The collection is nearly complete, and I am very proud of it. And if I'm ever stupid enough to have kids, I'll be sure to pass the books onto my daughter. ;) But there was originally a 1930s version that was very different, in terms of characters and plot. I really would like to read some of these-- if I could get my hands on some. ^_^ I think there's a reproduced edition of the originals-- the Nancy Drew Facsimilies, I believe. Whoo! I always thought that the series was kind of 50s-ish, what with all the girls always having such nice, trim figures and always wearing dresses. It wasn't until the Nancy Drew Files and the recent Nancy Drew series (on TV, cancelled, and later, a movie where she was a journalist!) that I really had a lot of respect for the sleuth, and not until even more recently that I decided to get back into the series. And I was under the odd impresion that Carolyn Keene was really a pseudonym for Mildred Benson, though heaven knows where I got THAT name. MysteryNet.com says that Nancy was the brainchild of a guy, who gave a female journalist the role of writing about Nancy's adventures, and when he died shortly after the first published volume, his daughter took over. o_O And apparently since, a whole SLEW of authors have written under the Carolyn Keene name, because Simon and Schuster OWN the syndicate! Now Nancy Drew sounds like a mob boss!
