The Great Meow

At some point in the not-so-distant future, I will finish my cute wallpaper of a kitten trying to be a lion. And possibly make matching icons.
In the meantime, now that Lion (Mac OS X 10.7) is out, I'm going through my list of apps to try and determine which ones are PowerPC (read: not going to work on Lion, ever!) and which ones are Intel/Universal binaries (read: probably will work, but not guaranteed).
Of those, I'm trying to find out which ones I can and cannot live without. For the ones that I can't, I'm looking for solutions. For example, realMyst. It's an amazing game, with levels you won't find in the other versions of Myst out there, even for Windows (as far as I know). It's also PowerPC-only and unlikely to get patched or updated in any way to be compatible with Lion.
The solution? Get Steam for Windows and download it there for cheap. That particular version of Myst from Steam IS realMyst, so it'll have the special world that doesn't exist in the other Myst releases, will be all kinds of awesome and while yes, I'll have to run it in Windows, for a game like Myst, it's actually kind of worth it.
For everything else, please offer suggestions as to other/better/newer apps that are Lion-compatible, or let me know if there's an update I should get (hopefully free, but if I have to pay for it, them's the breaks).
* AutoResume
* AutoRate
These are all part of Synergy, the iTunes controller from Wincent. I'm assuming there's going to be an update for them, but there's no word on Wincent's site at the moment...no updates since February, actually, which kind of worries me.
* HP IO Classic Proxy, HP IO Classic Proxy 2
I have no idea what this even is, except it's in my Library/Frameworks folder. HP usually has something to do with printers, but I've always gotten the drivers from within OSX, and what I need supplemented I can ge from HP's own website...though admittedly, I haven't checked with compatibility with my old printers. It's not like I'd cry if I had to get rid of them; they're big and junky.
* Microsoft AutoUpdate
I'm assuming this goes with one of the Office suites, but Office 2011 is fully Intel-compatible and, afaik, uses a different updater (I'm just not sure which one, or where it is...can anyone tell me? What comes up when you try to update MS Office 2011 on a Mac?). I think this must be the remnants of when I had Office 2008 or something on here, and I can probably get rid of it.
* Ridiculously-long Adobe Patch File
Obviously this makes me nervous, since patches are generally a good thing, but since when do patches have indecipherable names made up of a string of seemingly-random letters and numbers? Isn't CS5 fully Intel-compatible? I don't need to upgrade to 5.5 just for Lion, do I?
* Pen Pad
This goes with my VisTablet. I just went to their website and downloaded the latest driver for Mac, 1.74. Whether that's Lion compatible, I'm not sure...When I installed it, it didn't seem to touch the existing Pen Pad.app in my Applications folder, and post-install, the tablet isn't responsive to when I use its pen with it. Of course, the installer did recommend to restart (which I will once my other downloads complete), but it could also be because both of my laptop's USB ports are taken up, so I tried plugging it in via my hub. Sometimes certain USB devices don't get along with hubs, as is the case with my other tablet, so it could just be that...but I can't disconnect the existing USBs plugged into the laptop until I'm done.
* PCSX
This is one of the bigger disappointments. There are some older, really awesome PSX games out there, and I'd love to emulate them (or at least figure out how I can burn them so I can play them on my chipped PS2), but I don't have the slightest clue how to do that. PCSX was my way into doing that, even though I haven't made any headway lately. Tips?
* Jomic
A comic book reader. I just checked the website, and there are no updates available...but truthfully, there are lots of CBZ an other comic-format readers out there. I think this one even comes in a Java version.
* DivX Support, DivX Products, DivX Community
Eh...I don't think I'll miss this one. Besides, doesn't DivX update fairly regularly?
* Web Gallery, Export Flash Animation, Contact Sheets, Make Calendar, Analyze Documents
These all came with Adobe Illustrator CS5 (in the Scripting folder). Again, I'm pretty sure Adobe will update all of their stuff, but sometimes they have taken out great features. Still...I don't think I've used these. Aren't Web Galleries more of a Dreamweaver feature? Even if not, I have other apps that can create them, like iWeb and RapidWeaver. And the other things seem like they'd be templates or options available in the applications themselves.
* Myst 3: Exile
Grr. Well, I guess it makes more sense to have all my Myst on one OS, and that OS sadly has to be Windows. I still have the Masterpiece edition with the Mac PowerPC version, but also my old, old Windows version, too. And then Steam might let me get all of the Myst games for Windows (the latest ones available, compared to what I have on disc already) for cheap, anyway.
* MyCamera, ReadMe (RemoteCapture Task), RemoteCapture Task, ReadMe (CameraWindow), DirectTransfer, CameraWindowDVC+
These are from Canon...but how often do you really need the software provided by the camera manufacturer? I haven't had an issues plugging in my Canon and extracting pictures via iPhoto, but having an SD card slot on the side of my MacBook Pro certainly helps. I think I can safely do without this.
* Bejeweled 2
What? NOOOOOOOO! I have Bejeweled 3, though, which I think *is* Intel-native, and has all the same great features plus more...and I could always install this on my Windows VM if I really, really wanted to.
* Wipe Creator
I think this is some crappy piece of leftover junk from when I had that godawful Intego Security Suite installed on here. Good riddance!
* ShowHide Files
This is probably someone's AppleScript-turned-app for an easy way to Show or Hide system files. I can always go into Terminal and do this, but it's a pain. And I'm sure there'll be a way to do it (if necessary, and technically it SHOULDN'T BE) in Lion.
* Comical
Hey, waitasec, this was my other CBZ/CBR comic reader! With Jomic out of commission, what does this mean? Are there any Intel-native comic book readers out there? Are they free/open-source or not? I'm willing to spend a few bucks to get a good one that updates...this one hasn't been touched since 2005!
* Auto Buddy Icon 1.0
What is this? I don't even...
* realMyst
::sob::
* WebPrint Plus X
Quite possibly the ugliest OSX app I've ever seen. I think I got this with a bizarre and probably crappy bundle of some sort. I never use it (that would assume I even KNOW how), so I don't think I'll miss this.
* Delete_Preferences
From an old VLC install. Since VLC updates pretty regularly (including recently), I'm assuming this probably isn't going to affect the newest versions.
* StepMania 3.9
...Ugh, this would be like saying goodbye to an old friend! But StepMania 4.0 (still in beta) will be Intel-native, and in the meantime, I do have y PS2 and a few mixes...like 3rd Mix, 5th Mix, Extreme, Extreme 2, and SuperNova. :D
* Quicken 2007
Intuit is kind of a crap company, and I'm sad that they bought Mint, which I use regularly. I feel like Mint's customer service and updating (patching bugs in their web app and the like) has gone majorly downhill since Intuit's purchase. Quicken has never been easy for me to understand the wa Mint has, and their confusing updates as to what will work with Lion (Quicken Essentials only, afaik, and maybe QuickBooks, but hey, I'm not a small business, so that doesn't apply to me) aren't helping either. Long story short: good riddance!
* Tutorial
This came with my Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet when I bought it YEARS ago. I'm pretty sure I know how to use it by now.
* Archive Messages
This came with Mail Scripts. I'm not sure if I could somehow deconstruct it and re-save it as an Intel-compatible app, but those of you that have seen my inbox(es) and felt your eyeballs start to pop out of their sockets...well, you know why I might need this. The website says they haven't been updated/tested to work with Lion yet, and the developer is working on it. Yay!
* Iconographer
This has been discontinued by the developer and isn't likely to get a Lion version. I never really used it, but had it around in case I wanted to try my hand at making Mac icons. I'm sure there are other apps out there that can do the same thing, even if I have to pay a bit for them. Any suggestions, or should I just use regular image editors/Photoshop?
* Test Drive Hardware, Rebuild Directory, Quit the Finder, DiskWarrior Hardware Notification
These came with DiskWarrior, which I haven't updated in forever. It's one of those apps that's supposed to be worth its ridiculous cost, but I have Drive Genius 2, and...I don't know, too many toys that do the same thin doesn't make much sense to me.
* WingNuts, JARED
This is a freebie game that came with "Big Bang Board Games," which I think was part of a MacHeist bundle a while back. I never played it.
* iTunesplaylist, iTunesplay, iTunespause, iTunesendplaylist, GameSmith Updater, Airburst Extreme
These all came with Airburst Extreme, another game I think I got via MacHeist. It might even be a demo... :P
* IPS Patcher
Ugh, being a fan of Japanese ROMs can be a pain sometimes. Patches are sometimes necessary, but what do you do without a patcher app? I guess I've only needed this rarely, and I'd like to assume that the ROM community will find a way around Lion's Intel-only stance (maybe make an Intel patcher?), but I don't know for sure. Can I live without this? I hope so.
* Link Checker X 1.3
I think I got this as part of a MacHeist bundle too, but there are definitely other Link Checkers out there. Anyone know of any good ones that are up-to-date (Intel), have a nice GUI, and aren't too expensive? It does look like the one I found (BLT Express) is available through the App Store for $19.99, so that's one option. Any others?
* Grapher
This is in the Applications/Utilities folder. What exactly does it do? It makes graphs. Aaah, run away!
* Open XML for Excel, Open XML for Charts
This seems to have been included with some version of Office, because it's in the Application Support folder. If I get rid of this, does that mean I can't read the *.xlsx files?
* flashplayer
This makes me laugh. No wonder why Steve hates Flash so much--not only does it slow down your computer, but it somehow manages to get EVERYWHERE and yet never do what you want it to! This is in the Library/Documentation/Help/Hewlett-Packard/shrd/ folder. I don't even know what that's all about! Why does Help documentation require Flash?! Note to HP: UR DOIN IT WRONG!
* Bluetooth Regulatory Certification
This is another piece of documentation disguised as an app. I'm pretty sure it's just lingering around from my Tiger days.
* c_use_image_print, c_use_image_edit, c_use_folders, c_panorama_stitch, c_import_images, c_export_images, c_edit, c_create, c_burn_cd, c6100_transfer_scan, c6100_transfer_memcard, c_6100_transfer_camera, c6100_reprint_4x6, c6100_printcart, c6100_print_enlargement, c6100_print_4x6, c6100_photo_fix, c6100_paperjam, c6100_load_small, c6100_load_original, c6100_load_letter, c6100_load_adf, c6100_insert_memcard, c3100_transfer_scan, c3100_transfer_memcard, c3100_proofsheet, c3100_printcart, c3100_paperjam, c3100_load_small, c3100_load_original, c3100_load_letter, c3100_load_env
As I'm sure you can tell, these all have to do with my various printers. But they're all buried apps within the Documentation folder I mentioned before. I'm pretty sure they're not at all useful in any way. If my printers aren't Lion compatible, frankly I think it's time for new printers!
* HP Image Dropper
This has something to do with iPhoto, because it's in the Library/Application Support/Hewlett-Packard/iPhoto Support/ folder, but I don't know why. Again, if I get a new printer, I imagine this won't be an issue...
* HPSUSelfUpdatePostScript, HP Software Updater
Something to do with the HP software updating? It's ironic that the updater itself is PowerPC-only. Get with the times, people! I tried running it, and it didn't seem to do anything. I mean, it started up and had a progress bar, but it made no changes that I could see.
* Not in any Playlist -> Playlist
This is a script-based app that I got...probably with Synergy, maybe with another iTunes controller. I would like this to work, if only because it's a useful script, but I don't think AppleScript is going anywhere because of Lion...though if anyone has heard differently, please let me know!
* Myst 4
::sobs harder::
* JavaEmbedding
Intresting...this is copyrighted to Apple, but I thought Java was a Sun thing? Anyway, I'm assuming this won't be an issue in Lion...taking out Java would be like removing one's spleen, wouldn't it?
* LIFramework
I don't even know what this is. It's just in the Library/Frameworks folder. Anyone have an idea?
* StuffIt
Don't all Macs come with Archive Utility built in? What exactly does StuffIt do that the operating system doesn't?
After this is looking at all the other Intel-based apps and seeing which ones
a) haven't updated lately, and therefore may not work with Lion
b) I don't care about/use no matter how recently they've updated
And I think that's it...right? I almost seem Lion-ready...
In the meantime, now that Lion (Mac OS X 10.7) is out, I'm going through my list of apps to try and determine which ones are PowerPC (read: not going to work on Lion, ever!) and which ones are Intel/Universal binaries (read: probably will work, but not guaranteed).
