It's Launch Day for the iPad 2 here at the San Francisco Apple Store, and while I'm really hyped about everything, it's nice to get away from the craziness for even a little while. So here I am!
It's Day 11 of the 30 Days of Sailor Moon meme, as usual brought to you by Sailor Failures on Tumblr.
It's interesting how this one refers to Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and, usually by extension, Saturn as "Outer System Soldiers." I've heard that somewhere in the great depths of canon, Moon, Mars, Venus, Mercury, and Jupiter are officially called the "Inner" Senshi, so fanon dictates that the others would be "Outers," right?
Except if you designate who's an "Inner" and who's an "Outer" by what part of the solar system their planet lies in, then Jupiter would be an "Outer," because her planet is actually beyond the asteroid belt that defines the Inner planets from the Outer ones. So since we don't follow that designation, it's sort of superficial for who's on what team...after all, Sailor Moon's been pictured with the Outers even though she's clearly an Inner, but so has Chibi Moon, even though she's worked with both teams and even has her own (future) team!
Blah blah blah, my favorite Outer System Soldier is Pluto. I don't know why--maybe it's because she's tall, dark, and mysterious (in more ways than one), maybe it's because she rules over time with a Big Ass Key™, but Pluto's always been my favorite of the rarely-seen Senshi. And her heroic sacrifice in both the anime and the manga made a strong impact on all the Senshi and other characters--Chibiusa in the manga, since Pluto's initial death was what brought her back from being Black Lady and allowed her to become Sailor Chibi Moon for the first time, and Uranus and Neptune in the anime, since they were so devoted to their "mission" that they didn't think their deaths would actually cause more problems than they would solve.
Of course, Pluto made her impact with others besides them--in any canon, she was a very dear friend of Chibiusa, and she became a resource to Uranus and Neptune before long. She sided with them despite having known the Inners for longer (since the R/Black Moon arc), and she was even good friends with Reika in the manga, because she attended the same university as her (and Mamoru and Motoki as well, if I'm not mistaken)!
But...I'm not a fan of Pluto x Endymion. I'll admit, I've read it before, but I don't like the idea of Mamoru cheating on Usagi. It's funny, because while I'll ship Usagi x Seiya because I think Mamoru would logically want Usagi to have more experiences before tying herself to him forever-and-ever (because let's face it: they have THAT kind of relationship, not one with "openings" or "understandings"), or because Usagi herself might adore Mamoru, she'll have different and confusing feelings for Seiya (male or female, anime or manga), I don't think Mamoru would ever cheat on Usagi. This is the guy that, in the anime, broke up with her to "protect" her! And frankly, I do think he loves her for her--not because she's Serenity or the future Queen of Earth or mother of Chibiusa or any of that. I think the first arc/season made that abundantly clear.
But does Pluto have feelings for Endymion? It's very possible. I imagine being the guardian of time is a lonely position, and it's not as if Pluto is inhuman, or any different from the other Senshi. Her death and rebirth also gave her the unprecedented opportunity of living AS a human alongside the other Senshi (and Mamoru in his pre-King Endymion years), getting to feel, see, and do things she wouldn't have otherwise. It's an experience that could make her wiser than even all the knowledge of time, because what good is knowledge without the understanding of experience?
Yay, love polygons! I think I actually did a faux book cover for one of the
sailormoonland contests a while back, featuring that artwork from Book 2 with Serenity, Endymion and Pluto....
It's all about the Big Ass Key™, though.
