Ah, just four minutes after the end of the controversial CSI episode (also the one filmed on the CSUN campus), and I'm somewhat numb.
First, they cut the part where Catherine, Brass, and Nick came to investigate the death of Kira Derringer. We didn't even see Kira's face after she was dead, which surprised me, because I felt they did a really good job making her look dead. However, they did keep the goth band scene (though it was a lot shorter than I thought) and the scene where Sara confronts Hannah with Marlon's death.
The case, of course, ended up unresolved... I would like to believe that Sara's character might reappear somehow near series end, and the West case(s) finally do get resolved because of her participation. I think that could give her some closure.
I'm glad that they fleshed out her breakdown enough, and that they did the right thing in having her write a letter to Grissom. I'm glad that it was more explanatory than some fanfic about the episodes, but it is still pretty open-ended-- Sara left basically because the events with Natalie Davis in the desert just opened her mind to something that she'd already been thinking about: she's been living with ghosts ever since her father died, and she can't "bury" them in Vegas. She also said she didn't know where she was going, but I get the feeling she'd have to go home and talk things over with her mom at last (because her mom is still alive, but in jail, right?). So that means she's going to be in S.F. She's not likely to continue to be a CSI or even stay in law enforcement-- not unless Ronnie's words suddenly get back to her. But Ronnie's new and fresh, with lots of optimism and not a lot of experience to back it up, so I doubt Sara will ever really put much faith into it.
I did think the kiss was sweet, but a real sign, and Grissom really should have gone immediately after her. I guess it made more sense than the mush I was hoping for --a lab wedding with someone like Brass or Robbins officiating-- her just kissing him because she couldn't think but didn't just want to let him think he was the cause of her leaving.
What I really hate is that others honestly had the opportunity to talk to or even stop Sara from doing what she did, e.g. cutting the name off her vest and putting the "Good Luck" vest in Ronnie's locker. It's like, why didn't anyone notice? Of course, Sara's as stubborn as a mule, so even if others started with something as simple as "Are you okay?" I doubt she would respond. Even if it was Grissom, I don't think she would-- after all, when he was pretty much doing just that after her interrogating Hannah, she backed off and said that it would just make things worse. She said that basically because she sensed what she said in her letter: she didn't want Grissom to be there when she finally broke down.
I think it's a good thing that she made the effort to nip things in the bud, but bad because she didn't really do it properly-- not to Grissom, not to her friends, not to work in general. She didn't exactly give advance notice, and I think that's what provides the most shock value. But if they don't show Grissom, Greg, Nick, and Warrick (moreso than Catherine, I think) being affected, it'll really cheapen everything, and it'll make me mad (possibly enough to stop watching the show, because a character having a lasting impact is something necessary for any show, especially one that's been on as long as this one has).
I really hope fic starts to fill in this void; while I don't think it's possible for Sara to "bury her ghosts" quickly, I do think the possibility of her returning is strong, and I sincerely hope she and Grissom still end up married in the end.

I'm not quite sure her letter qualifies as a "love" letter, though...
And as for Greg, I'm not sure if he was still crushing on her in S8, though he will always be cute. He did have a crush on her for many seasons, but at some point (according to him, anyway), he found out about her and Grissom, and so tempered down his flirting. But I think the entire team will miss her a lot; they have great connections with each other, but pretty strong connections with Sara, especially.
