If you're getting sick of this or think it doesn't apply to you, move along.

I was surprised how easy it was to backup my LJ... you do need the Mac LJ app XJournal, but if you don't intend on using it after you do this, you can easily delete it.

(1) Go into XJournal and hit Cmd-1 (that's a ONE) to view the history. Refresh the history, then click DOWNLOAD.
(2) Go to Library/Application Support/XJournal/History.plist (don't click on it, just keep that window open in Finder)
(3) Create a folder where you'd like your backup to be stored. It'll be arranged by year/month/day, and then by post ID. I did mine on my external HD, in a folder called "Journal Backup".
(4) Go here and grab [livejournal.com profile] antennapedia's super-easy to use Python script. Remember to change the extension from py.txt to just .py when you save. Save it in your Journal Backup folder, wherever that may be/whatever it may be called.
(5) Open Terminal:
***DO NOT use the root user/sudo!***
(a) Navigate to your Journal Backup folder. Since mine was in an external location, I typed:
cd /Volumes/"My Book"
(because my external HD is called "My Book" -- putting it in quotes lets you use spaces without difficulty)
(b) Type this: chmod a+x extractXJournal.py
***IT WON'T WORK IF YOU DIDN'T SAVE THE SCRIPT IN THE SAME LOCATION AS YOUR JOURNAL BACKUP FOLDER, OR IF YOU DIDN'T CHANGE THE EXTENSION!***
(c) Type this: ./extractXJournal.py
It may take a while for the process to finish, but when it does...
(6) Navigate in Finder to your Journal Backup folder. See all your entries. Voila! Everything will be in nice *.html format, rather than the XML format that's so common to most backup scripts.

WHAT IT WILL DO:
Organize everything for you.
Make your entries into HTML format (retains your links, formatting, etc.)
Make your entries searchable in all the ways that they are not on LJ.

WHAT IT WILL NOT DO:
Copy your journal's layout.
Copy comments.

May I just say that I find the whole title of "strike through 2007" utterly *hilarious*??

I did mean it in a good way. I find most of the titles fannish sorts come up with to be funny. CharityGate, for another example. ^___^

And I thought DeleteGate was already taken?
