The Surveyor vs. The Eagle ROUND 1
May. 29th, 2003 10:27 pmGah, I am really starting to hate the yearbook staff. Every year, something goes wrong with the yearbook-- from 2000's "marble going down a psychadelic toilet bowl" to this year's cutting out of nearly 15 seniors from the yearbook. And it's not just seniors, either-- they forget pictures and names of other students too... and worse, the bullshit for a lot of their captions and text! Some of their stories are downright preposterous, and if I didn't say it before, I am ROYALLY pissed that on the page they used for both Journalism and Yearbook, 'The Future Correspondent,' they dared to say that THEY worked twice as hard as us! AUGH!!
*punch kick uppercut!*
Let me start by saying I've been on the Journalism staff for four years now. I'm a very proud Eagle, and being in high school journalism has strengthened my resolve to major in the subject, get a BA, and eventually move on to a graduate school where I can get my MA in Journalism. One day, I hope to either teach the subject at a high school like Wash, or work at a magazine in NYC, like YM.
So anyway, with the Surveyor staff saying this, it pisses me off, because they don't really know. For the four years I've been on the staff, we've always had trouble getting enough people to sign up for the class. When they don't sign up, not only does the paper become harder to put out (at all; putting it out frequently is hard enough) but it limits the amount of money we get from the school district. For four years, we've had such an assortment of people on the staff, some dedicated, but most not. Our staff's never been more than 12 people, even in my freshman year when I was just a lowly reporter.
Meanwhile, the yearbook tends to get filled pretty fast, meaning a staff of over 20 people. Not to mention a) they always have the huge basement or some big classroom to work out of; we're always in closet-sized space or cramped classes; b) just because Ms. Taylor, who tends to be "firey" is their advisor doesn't mean we get it easy. Diesel's not nice when he's mad, and we hate getting the paper out "late." Also, the Surveyor staff doesn't seem to realize-- we don't get a whole semester off; people don't PAY US to do our work, we don't get discounts or anything. What we say is read around the city, distributed to other schools around California, and is posted online. What's written in the yearbook only students and faculty that buy the yearbook read. They also get lots of funding and support from the district, while the newspaper struggles to deal with computer malfunctions left and right, printing press errors, people who don't do articles, people who do SHIT for articles... *sigh* I'm just glad it's nearly over.
Today we finally finished up the paper and filled up the last of the space-- it's an amazing 20 pages long, and we're supposed to have the usual 3000 copies-- but distribution will be a bitch, since finals are next week for everyone except seniors, who have graduation rehearsal. So I suppose we can distribute either during the 4th period final or before/after rehearsal, for the seniors. BUT (and there always has to be a 'but') when we got ALL the graphics and fonts together, and Eva, Cassie and I (all very stressed... okay, maybe just me and Cassie, 'coz Eva NEVER seems stressed) tried to send the paper to Folger's Graphics, our printers, we kept having errors-- their FTP space had 'exceeded its disk quota' and we couldn't call them, because the number had been disconnected! Of course, they hadn't updated their website either, so we just emailed all of them enmasse and complained. *sigh of relief* Well, Kirk emailed me back, so we can handle things tomorrow morning-- I have to force myself to get up and LEAVE early. Shouldn't be much of a problem considering I don't have much to bring to school or get together. Let's just pray I don't see Potter on the bus, because... yes, tomorrow, I am going through with The Plan. Not that hard, I just want the guy to relax a little around me, but you know me, totally gutless around guys =P I just want a hug!
Thank god Diesel's coming back tomorrow, though I suspect he'll be irked that the paper hasn't BEEN out. -.- It's kinda hard to sort out financial and distributing stuff when our adviser isn't there though, not to mention when the sub's a total bitch. She was writing out referrals all day, and a) no one does that anymore, and b) it's the end of the school year! Let's just not go anymore into that, because I could prattle my brain off.
Ah, and of course, the traditional "school makes a big change effective right after you leave." This time around, Colonel's retiring. To be honest, Colonel's a lot better than SMAJ, but... I dunno, when you're not in JROTC, they're both pretty cool. They had a retirement party (I wasn't told! NO FAIR!) that, Sheila just revealed to me CUNNINGHAM was at! AUGH! Ever since Gina mentioned him that day at the Metreon, I've been dying to see him again. *snickers* I wonder how much he's changed... I know I have. If I saw him again, I know I'd... uh, *kills that thought* I just hope he comes to Graduation. =P Hey, I went to his!
I gotta take a shower soon and then look for the notes on the 2nd part of my math final tomorrow. And try to sleep, given my plan and how it's giving me the absolute jitters. *sigh* Not that hard, not that hard... besides, I have to go to ROTC tomorrow anyway and see Sheila for some reason. *_* My imagination wishes Cunningham would be there tomorrow, but... NAH! Bunch of awkwardness anyway, if he was there and I walked in with Jonathan. =P I mean, Jonathan could pass for his younger brother, but J.Po hates being compared to Jason. *snicker* Besides, they're both pretty hot and all, but they have ... relatively different personalities. Too bad neither of them seem to have AIM. *growls* AUGH!
