Fond Memories and a Sore Throat
Mar. 20th, 2003 01:42 pmFor some reason I've been thinking a lot about my freshman year. Maybe it's because I'm a senior now and I'm remembering what NOW I'd probably term "the good ol' days." But I was miserable in my freshman year. I don't think there were ever any fantastically good school years-- even preschool had its dark side, but I know I enjoyed my freshman year-- at least from what I remember.
Like, for example, what's been haunting me (how appropriate) the past few weeks. The Halloween JROTC party in Golden gate Park. I was bragging about my awesome frisbee skills (I was reminded today because a PE class was playing frisbee, learning all the terms for the moves, like 'fade,' 'slide,' and so forth) and so I brought this dog-eared green frisbee that had been sitting in my closet for years. I always have this mantra when it comes to sports. It worked for bowling, it worked for swimming; I thought it would work for frisbee too. I used to play all the time with my dad and his friend Steve in LA. I haven't in a while, I sort of want to. I remember it being loads of fun, especially with a dog. =D Okay, so the memory (and this is kind of funny if you know the people I'm talking about). Halloween party in the park. I'm being my uncreative (har har) self and dressed as Faith the Vampire Slayer from BtVS (Ohmygod! Angel was so killer last night! Willow guest starred, and she was kind of empty-headed about the whole Angelus/Beast/Cordelia mess, but... hey, Faith's going to be on Buffy! And Angel quite apparently still has feelings for our favorite blonde slayer! WAHOO!) only I didn't have a stake. But I was helping the girls (since, for some odd reason, the tables were voluntarily segregated by gender. Go figure)make the burgers, and we kept yelling across to the guys that ours were better than theirs. Eventually Quynh took over for us, and so I went to play frisbee...
I insert the following here: I was in Delta Company, or 6th period ROTC my freshman year. My company commander was Jason Cunningham, who I had the *biggest* crush on. I SWEAR. The guy made my face turn scarlet, and even though Eva has described our relationship as "love-hate" it's almost like brother and sister. We didn't talk much, but I swore I was in love with him. Yeah, one of those. Now, he wasn't just my company commander, he was also the Brigade S3 (Training and Operations, I believe). That makes him uber-ranky. In other words, RESPECT THE MAN! FEAR!! He was 6'2" and was in the reserves anyhow, so of course he was quite intimidating. I loved screwing with his head, admittedly. NOW, his best friend was the stoic, quiet, FEAR-OF-ALL-THAT-IS-HOLY Alex Chun. This guy scared the living bejeezus and then some out of me just by looking at me. But I really loved his hair. =D Now, so Alex was nothing in the company, but he was the Battalion Executive Officer, and the Brigade Commander. COMMANDER. HEAD HONCHO. BIG CHEESE! I was terrified of him.
Back to the picnic. I'm playing frisbee. The tables are segregated, and I'm trying on throwing a perfect curve to the girls down the field from me, and NOT look at Cunningham's butt as he fiddles with something near the tables. But my throw is off, due to my lack of concentration, and guess where my frisbee landed. GUESS. *blush* Now, Chun (who I nicknamed Chun-bear, but I think his girlfriend gave him that nickname first) was barbequing, minding his own business, until my frisbee hit him RIGHT ON THE ASS. I MEAN RIGHT ON IT. The minute I saw it shooting towards him I dropped everything and ran. It didn't work well, due to the laws of physics and such, and both Chun and Cunningham turned around and stared RIGHT at me. I was so bright red I might as well have been a tomato. It was so embarassing, but now that I look back, it was so funny. I think Chun was blushing too, which makes it even cuter.
I wonder what those guys are up to.
Gah, even with Cherry Coke, I'm always falling asleep in class. I had bags under my eyes this morning (I even slept in choir... Mr. Ulrich let me, since he was auditioning the underclassmen for next year's choir) and wanted the Econ presentation to go off without a hitch... I woke up enough to suitably present the change-color hair gel. =D The other products my classmates came up with included Nike Antiperspirant, Strawberry 7Up, Jolt Bolt Bar, White Chocolate Snickers, Fruity Essences Shampoo, and Starburst Gum. There's supposed to be one group presenting tomorrow too... but all in all, I think we did a great job, and Gilmore was amused. The tips I got from Taisuke really helped. It was amazing to hear HE had Gilmore too... yeesh, she'd old. >_> (Then again, what teachers truly AREN'T at this school?)
I cut third period (ooh, bad me. Security didn't even catch me. I could have written an article about the lack of security) and went to go get Cassie the "big fat balloons" I promised her. I was supposed to go to the Safeway on La Playa, but the 31 wasn't coming. I believe it had something to do with all the cooky protesters that think that sitting and camping out in the street will stop Bush from dropping bombs on Iraq. -.- You can see my stance on this whole thing. Anyway, so I walked to this florist shop on 38th or something, across from the Balboa theater. Mom told me about it-- said that Michelle had gotten me a rose there for my birthday many years ago, but I wasn't sure if they had balloons. Well, the did-- but the 36" (truly jumbo) ones were $12.50 EACH! The 18" (half the jumbo size) were only $2.99, so I got two of those. I walked back to school as slowly as possible, with much time to spare... so I sat, freezing and bored out watching the PE class play frisbee.
In Journalism, Diesel revealed something surprising-- he'd been trying to organize a human peace sign on the football field at lunch. He'd made little flyer things to put in the teachers' mailboxes, and he'd even gotten Principal Ishibashi's permission. But then, this morning, Ishibashi "revoked" his decision without even telling Diesel! Diesel had spoken to a reporter from the Chronicle (eee!!!) about how word has gotten out that our school is the most liberal, and has the best free speech and politically active student newspaper (I'm so proud!!). Diesel called him today about this, and the reporter came here to school-- but he was stopped by security! I don't know whether what the security guards say is true, but they say that the reporter gave them attitude, and wouldn't sign in as he was supposed to. He apparently started asking students questions without identifying himself, and finally Ishibashi dragged him into the office and talked with him. When Ishi finally let him out, we wanted to bring him to journalism and find out what happened, talk to him, and maybe get ourselves recognized in The Chron (that would be so cool). But Diesel and Ishi were talking to him out on the porch the whole time and we had to go soon for lunch.
I was super hungry, so I ended up buying two bagels and I'm now on my second Cherry Coke. The anime club meeting was so rowdy, and I couldn't get anyone to listen. Gina just broke the news to me that she's transferring out soon and going to John Adams to graduate THIS year, so she won't be the President of Anime Club next year. *sniff* I hope it still exists though. We did come up with some cool ideas for the club to do for Mayfest-- there's the annual anime-style portraits, a raffle with prizes (wallscrolls, PS2 games, etc.) and HOPEFULLY HOPEFULLY (oh Goddess, please please please) I can talk to Pat about lending the MAX 2 machine for us to use... gawd, that would rake in so much cash. It's on May 2nd, which *is* a Friday, but... with Extreme, hardly anyone plays MAX 2 anymore. Besides, it would only be from 11am to 3pm. =D I hope that it's possible, I gotta talk to Pat through Jeremy or something.
Ho hum... Thompson really liked my answers to the questions on the poems we did yesterday-- "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" and "The Nymph's Reply." I typed mine up, and used them in discussion, even though I almost fell asleep-- she forgot to collect them as usual, so that gives me time to do the essay and the Pardoner's tale tomorrow. but she said I get a boost in my grade because I had it and it was so neat! YAY!
Yep yep, and Media Academy's almost over, so I have to pay mom for the Fanime registration ($115) and the hotel room ($99/night) Obviously I won't have all of that; people will be paying ME for the hotel rooms, which will go back to the money I have to use so my mom and I are even. That way I have money FOR Fanime.
I want to do something weird and cheap for my birthday. Any ideas?
