Last-minute mayhem!
Jan. 24th, 2005 01:02 pmFinally, some time on the comp! I tried to install SP2 on this comp (yes, I gave in-- I reasoned that the vulnerabilities in IE aren't worth the hassle of the other issues, which I'm sure will be fixed later on) but of course, since this XP is er... less than legal, shall we say, it doesn't work. And being that I'm leaving in two days, I guess it's not really my problem anymore, is it? ^^; In any case, Symantec is mysteriously working again, so I don't need to uninstall and reinstall THAT.
Today I'm trying to get some online stuff finished-- and eventually turn the comp over to Scott, because I feel bad for shafting him the other day when we went to the Main Library and I used up all of my 45 minutes entirely on my own. ^^; But he was forgiving, of course, and all was well later on. We have these spontaneous, serious talks that end up being entirely necessary, very tough and revealing... it all makes things easier/better in the end, I think.
What else? Well, we finished our movie marathon, so tomorrow we're going to visit my Dad in Alameda and return the five DVDs: The Mask of Zorro, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Usual Suspects (trippy movie!), the Italian Job (hey, I liked it!) and Devil's Advocate (ULTRA-TRIPPY!). Unfortunately, there's a bunch we HAVEN'T done yet-- gone to RTA/Pier 39, checked out Japantown... or met any of "the guys," like Vince, Jimbo, etc... I mean, HI GUYS!!! where are you? *sniffle* I miss everyone...
I've been having a bunch of trippy dreams lately though (and I'm willing to bet that "trippy" is my word of the day). Last night's/this morning's is really the only one I remember though. Here's how it went (maybe you can decipher it for me): I rush in late to this classroom that's got somewhat strange ambient, dim lighting, and lots of circular tables scattered around, with those plush, swively office chairs bolted to it in a semi-circle. The teacher is this lady vaguely reminiscent of Professor T (can't spell it) from Harry Potter-- scraggly hair, except it's dark instead of gray or blonde or brown or whatever it was. It was some Creative Writing 300-level class.
There was only five minutes left of the course though, because I thought it started at 11, and it really started at 8am... and I sat down and tried to catch up, but to no avail-- and worse, the teacher pissed me off by still expecting me to turn some assignment that I didn't know about in! A nice girl at my table told me that the assignment sheet was on page 1084 of our book or something... but yikes, 1000+ pages? o_O I also remember seeing Jonathan Potter-- sitting in a suit on the other side of the class. (Great, just what I need.) I shouted at the teacher that I shouldn't have to put up with her shiznit, that I was good enough for Upper Division, but she didn't care. -_-; And then for some even more bizarre reason I saw/thought of Jason Cunningham... >_< He's just never going to get out of my head, is he? (Screw this, I think I'll just Friend him on Friendster and see what happens.)
I don't think I'll be able to get my PS2 modded, either... which is a major bummer, but knowing me, Evil Genius that I am, I have a Plan! Yes, with a capital 'p!' Mom was intending to pay for the mod chip and install via credit card (since she has no cash/checking $ on hand-- she's behind on the rent and other bills, which makes me wonder why she was so insistent on getting me the chip in the first place...). But that's not what Dave (the install guy from PSX-TECH) wanted-- since I'm a local install, he probably wanted me to come in with cash or a check. No go on that end-- I only have $32 in my accounts, since I had to lend Scott $35 to pay a bill... >_< But I'll have money once I get to Northridge and I get my FinAid check and deal with my ScholarShare and CalGrant! Yeeeaah!
Anywho, the Plan is to buy the chip myself (or Mom can, if she's feeling generous post-tax-doing and such) and have it shipped to LA-- that's $50 less than it would be with the local install, so if Scott can figure out how to open up my PS2 and do it himself, all the better! Plus he says he could also do it to HIS PS2 (which is technically his PS2 that he gave to a friend that doesn't use it), which is in better condition than my V7 used one. ^^; I still have to glue the CD tray panel back in place...
Aside from all that, I'm feeling deliciously inspired for Circle of Seven, I've finished my FAFSA corrections, I've got this great little book that I picked up at the Booksmith in Haight/Ashbury called "The Writer's Block," chock full of inspirational ideas, and then some. Anyhow, I've got to shower and get ready to pack and plan my last two days here... that'll be a whirlwind for sure. Scott really need to use the comp, and I'm still not sure how/if he'd react to my LJ-- so I'm just going to close this right here. I swear, I'll catch up on everyone else's LJ's eventually... I'm positive I've missed out on bunches. ;_; WAUGH!

Date: 2005-02-02 06:25 pm (UTC)It happened because 99.9% of all dubbing studios, especially those headed by 4Kids are based in Canada. The same holds true for Viz titles, which are dubbed at Ocean Studios in Vancouver.
As for Mokuba in GX, as far as I know we haven't seen him yet... he would be roughly 15 by the time GX occurred though, by my estimates. (I think?) So who knows?

Date: 2005-02-02 08:54 pm (UTC)Yu-Gi-Oh first arc (intro, various games, Bakura/Monster World, Death-T, etc.) - Everyone's in Grade 10, and therefore 15-16 years old.
Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters first arc (Duelist Kingdom) - Still in Grade 10, start of Grade 11. Ages 16-17 for the main cast.
Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters (RPG arc, intro to Battle City) middle/end of Grade 11. Everyone's about 16, with Anzu, Seto, etc. turning 17.
YGO DM: (Battle City) Supposedly during winter-- so Jounouchi might have turned 17, as would have Bakura, Malik, etc.
DOOM/DOMA/Waking the Dragons arc - Spring/Summer, when the final year of high school starts for everyone. Everyone besides Yugi is now 17-18.
Yu-Gi-Oh the Movie: "three years after Duelist Kingdom," give or take a few months. Everyone should be 18 by now.
KC Grand Prix, start of the 3rd/final school year. People are 18.
* NOTE: the Japanese school year starts in April and ends in March, with sporadic one-to-two week long breaks for Christmas/New Year's (the latter being a HUGE deal in Asia), Golden Week (the emperor's observed birthday, even though he's just a figurehead in Japan), and so on. They probably get six to eight weeks at most off for summer, and they do return to school sporadically in July and August. The school year is in full swing again by late August/September.
Memory World arc - Summer of the final year-- if everyone hasn't graduated by now, they will in the following spring. Everyone's either 18 or 19.
Months later, Kaiba draws up the plans for his Dueling Academia, which probably takes a while to set up. By now, Kaibaland is already built and in full-swing, as seen in the movie and in the KC Grand Prix arc, which takes place in America, as far as I know.
Yugi makes a reappearance in GX, but you only see his head. Kaiba, in the initial sketches, still wears his Battle City costume, but you know him-- once he finds a favorite, he sticks with it (man after my own heart)! So GX reasonably takes place 3-5 years after the original, since Yuuki Juudai is named as Yugi's successor. Most everyone would look the same, but they're off at college/working/etc.
Yuuki is supposed to be the same age as Yugi when he first started, meaning 15-16... and that means if everyone else is anywhere from 20-22, it's 3-5 years after the END of the original.
... did that make sense?
Re: ^^;
Date: 2005-02-02 09:28 pm (UTC)Re: ^^;
Date: 2005-02-03 03:52 am (UTC)I can't remember my reasoning about when the movie takes place-- it's either before or after the DOOM arc, and judging by the episodes where people are not surprised with Pegasus still being involved with Industrial Illusions, I'm leaning toward AFTER DOOM.
But yeah, everything else is fairly roughly calculated, and since everything took place in the span of high school, Yu-Gi-Oh was a "three year series." They ranged from age 15-18 throughout the series, 19 for the older ones born in the fall. Add a few more years on to make it reasonable for Yugi to retire, Kaiba to set up a dueling school, etc. and you have 19+3 = 22 for most people, 21 for Yugi (who now dresses a'la Pharaoh, in leather and chains). 22-6 = 16 or 15 for Mokuba, since he was born in July.

Date: 2005-02-04 07:22 am (UTC)DOOM/DOMA whatever it's called... after that is the arc nicknamed "KC Grand Prix," because Kaiba stages yet another tournament in order to restore Kaiba Corp to its former glory (remember, Dartz bought out shares of it and nearly toppled it to the ground). He invites people from around the world, but even the best duelists have something to hide...
Re: ^^;
Date: 2005-02-04 06:57 pm (UTC)Re: ^^;
Date: 2005-02-05 06:32 pm (UTC)And technically, Rafael beat Yugi only because Yugi (or rather, the Pharaoh) got ahead of himself and got all power-crazy-- for the same reasons Kaiba usually does. Makes sense in a weird way, doesn't it?
As for who bought the shares, it was Dartz, as far as I know-- Alister might have been the one who lured Kaiba to Duelist Kingdom, but it was Kaiba's own assumption that Pegasus was behind it all.
Re: ^^;
Date: 2005-02-07 06:58 pm (UTC)Re: ^^;
Date: 2005-02-07 09:16 pm (UTC)As for Alister, it is spelled as I just did-- according to the WB website, at any rate. There are multiple ways of spelling it though, as there are of spelling Rafael (again, the WB)/Raphael, etc.

Date: 2005-02-08 05:51 am (UTC)Kaiba never does get the Rod, but that doesn't mean he wasn't affected by it. He was forced to duel Isis because not only did she want Obelisk back, but she wanted to save her brother, and there was no guarantee that Yami could do it. She could only see so far into the future, and it's somewhat believed that Isis's visions can only show her so much before the rest is left up "to the Gods."
Ad for the girl he saw, her name is Kisara, and back in Ancient Egypt, she was the walking embodiment of the Blue Eyes. In a nutshell (without too many spoilers) she died selflessly in Seto's name. In the anime, she outright saved his life by blocking a fatal attack from seto's menacing Daddy Dearest.
Re: ^^;
Date: 2005-02-08 07:54 am (UTC)Re: ^^;
Date: 2005-02-18 06:40 am (UTC)As for Kaiba "deserving" anything, who really can say? He's a big skeptic, and even if Yugi or Malik handed the rod over to him, who's to say Kaiba would really use it, or even know how? And as for Yugi having it, it's not like he USES it-- he can only use the one item, as far as I know. The only way to control the other Millennium Items is with the Ring.
As for the girl, her name is Kisara-- she's got a sort of tragic backstory to her, but not as much as fangirls like myself would like. Her whole story makes Kaiba seem a bit more human, and his former self, Priest Seto, as well. Basically, she came to him without memory, and was found to be the host of a very powerful "soul spirit" known as the White Dragon. However, something happened to her prior to their meeting that fused her "ka" (soul spirit, the duel monster) with her "ba" (life energy). She couldn't summon the Dragon of her own free will, like the others could.
The Pharaoh could do this with a number of creatures; most everyone else was limited to one. However, Seto and the other Guardians were tasked with tracking down people with too-powerful Ka and if they were abusing their powers (i.e. being criminals), they trapped their ka in stone tablets. So the people had their ka removed, but they didn't die. You can exist without a ka.
Anyhow, in this timeline, the Pharaoh and Seto were cousins-- through another Guardian, Akunadin, the holder of the Millenium Eye. He was also responsible for the creation of the Millennium Items through a dark magic ritual, magic which involved the sacrifice of 99 lives-- villagers from Bakura's town, when he was a child.
Can you see where this is going?
Bakura takes control of Akunadin, and makes him the avatar of this dark being, Zork (sound familiar? He was the same pawn that Bakura tried to kill Yugi and Co. with in the Monster World tabletop RPG). Zork poisons Akunadin's mind, and thus he tries to convince Seto to take Kisara's ka. But Seto knows that if he does that, she will die, since her ka is fused with her ba.
So far, she's saved his life on a number of occasions, though it's always been when she's unconscious. She has little memory of what happens when she summons the dragons, but she highly respects Seto, and refuses to let anything happen to him.
Long story short, she takes a blast for him (in the manga, she actually finds herself unable to run away from Seto when he's in danger, and as a result, Akunadin-Zork kills her) and her soul is sealed away in a tablet. Akunadin takes control of Seto and puts the Blue-Eyes White Dragon ka into him, so now Seto has BEWD as a ka instead of what he had before, Deos (looks kind of like Buster Blader). He gets into a duel with the Pharaoh, but when he's about to attack and win, Kisara appears and breaks the mind control Akunadin has over Seto. Kisara (as the dragon) then blasts Akunadin, Zork, etc. away-- but in the process seals the dying-Pharaoh (as far as I've heard) and Bakura away in their respective Millennium Items.
Re: ^^;
Date: 2005-02-18 06:53 am (UTC)Re: ^^;
Date: 2005-02-18 07:31 am (UTC)Deos LOOKS like Buster Blader, but I can't be sure if they're related at all.
The Pharaoh was a) not named Yami - that is a made-up name based off a bad translation of what he's called in the manga, which is "Dark Yugi." b) not evil. Actually, he was a very good guy, but sort of like King Tut, he was put on the throne when he was very young, with some very power-hungry people wanting what he had.
Seto didn't get blasted into a Millennium Item and sealed away because he and Isis were presumably the only survivors. Seto survived just long enough to have a poem of sorts inscribed on a stone, which describes "the Nameless Pharaoh" and how his body had crumbled to dust, but his name will invoke great power, which will last throughout all time.
The other guardians (Akunadin, Kalim, Mahaado, Shada) all died-- Akunadin was sealed away as Zork, Kalim and Shada both died in a battle protecting the Pharaoh from Bakura's ka, Diabound, and Mahaado died in a one-on-one with Bakura that resulted in him fusing his mind with his ka, thus becoming the Dark Magician (or the Illusory Magician, or the Black Magician as he's known later on). Bakura also gets Mahaado's Millennium Ring for the first time.
It's never really made clear why the Pharaoh and Kaiba can't get their memories back, but Bakura does-- and he shows it, too. Early on, he references Zork, and he holds a strong grudge against the Pharaoh, though he probably doesn't remember *everything.* If he did, he'd probably take a lot more out on Seto, since his father is the one that did all the mass-murdering of Bakura's people. But on the flip side, that same father is Zork now, and wants to use Seto as his new avatar, so Seto might be considered an ally of sorts against the Pharaoh...
It's all one big complicated mess. Trust no one. Duel them all.
