The Mer: Hot Date?
Sep. 2nd, 2004 12:20 pmI think one of my biggest flaws has to be my big mouth. Whenever something exciting (or even depressing, to a certain degree) happens, everyone knows about it. So of course whenever I have a crush on someone, it never stays secret for long. Of course, when it comes to OTHER people's secrets, I'm damn good at keeping my mouth shut. Mer The Lockbox of Doom. I highly value trust and honesty in people, so while I can't keep my own secrets to save my life, I'm good with other peopkle's.
Anyway, so as nervous as I was yesterday re: possibly meeting up with Scott, it all went off flawlessly. After classes, I went to the Edge and got my usual Iced Tea, professing my uncertainty to Mr. Buyback (who calls me Zoom Zoom). Of course I was nervous-- I'm incredibly Phone Shy, and I didn't want to come off as pushy-- after all, I'd emailed him Monday, TMd him in Math class... well, so I swallowed my pride and prayed I'd get his voice mail.
No such luck. He was at this museum called the Getty with his class, and was just heading back to CSUN. He said he'd call me back in 20 minutes, during which time I picked up a WIRED magazine (The Giants of Anime are coming) and some staples (would you believe Grandpa does NOT own a stapler?). When he called back, he said it'd be a while before he got back to campus and finished with his last class at 3:30, so I said I'd meet him at the Mall. Thankfully, Grandpa picked me up and I went to the Mall after dropping off my backpack.
First stop: Game Stop. Armed with the cash from my last "paycheck," I paid for the remainder of my Star Ocean 3: Till The End of Time, plus the Brady Games guide-- I never play games without guides, and $15 for a color book that thick (and by Brady, which is 10,000x better than Prima's guides), it was a good deal. Got a poster too, but I need to do some manipulation to get it up on my wall. Double-sided foam holding tape is my new best friend against the evils of old wallpaper. Scotch tape just doesn't do it for me anymore. I went trolling around the Mall for random stuff:
* An Initech hat from Hot Topic (black!) - I used my 15% off sales card, finally!
* Two hairbands at Claire's, one of which matches my purple Chinese-style Converse
* Other stuff... I dunno, I can't remember. o_O I actually resisted for some tempting buys (Amy Brown's Fairy folder and binder paper). Go me.
When I circled back to Borders, I waited around, hoarding on Manga-- Tsubasa: Resevoir Chronicle, xxxHolic, Hot Gimmick #6 (not #5! DARNIT!), and a few others. I headed to the Writing Reference section while waiting for Scott to call and meet me. I mean, 3:30 came and went while I was shopping, so I got worried he might have er... well, found something BETTER to do. But he showed up! ^_^ He bonked me on the shoulder with the step ladder, actually, but it wasn't like it hurt.
We looked at other manga (he's into DBZ, apparently), other comics (briefly skimming the strain of Comic Book Movies, weird adaptations, and future villains), and then magazines (bizarre busts of heroes in the ToyFaire magazine). No more Orbita sparkly, scented pens though! Someone buy me the new set at Borders... *sniff* All in all, my 5 volumes of manga to $42, which is a fantastic deal, IMHO. Gotta love those Borders, Buy 3, get 1 Free sales. ;)
Turns out Scott has a red Civic dx. Used, but cute nonetheless. Good thing there was no leather interior, because it would have been roasting. It's "old school" though, with rolling windows and key-locks, so he always had to unlock my door for me-- but he was nice enough to unlock mine first. Then again, it could just be because it makes SENSE for him to... *shrug*
The plan was to go to Hollywood and go to the Vine and see the double feature of Spiderman and I, Robot, but time wasn't on our side-- by the time we got there, I, Robot (which was what we both really wanted to see. Phoo, some other time-- after I've read Asimov's original) was finished. We walked around a bit, back to the car, and decided to go to this place on Beverly to see Donnie Darko, the Director's Cut. As weird as it is for me to say, I didn't feel comfortable trying to take control and dictate where we should go or anything, so I went along with it. And it turned out great anyway!
We swung by this Jewish deli/restaurant called Carten's (I think), and I ordered a thick, highly overpriced sandwich, along with a too-big, too-spicy pickle. But they at least had Snapple! I need more caps... we smuggled our sandwiches into the theater, and since it's an Indie theater, they actually had a female announcer! It was great; I'm so sick of the MovieTunes guy... The movie started not long after that, and there were even previews-- one for an NC-17 movie! O_O it's called 'A Dirty Shame,' by the way, and looks hilarious, but a bit... er, "raunchy?"
Donnie Darko was 100% creepy. A mind-fuck movie, as I call it, similar to The Butterfly Effect, but a bit more philosophical. There were a few opportunities for me to be Uber-Girly and grab onto Scott's arm out of fear (you would too, if a grotesque 6' tall bunny named Frank appeared frequently in front of you!), but I missed them. Contact was slight, but nice. I made a disaster with my sandwich though, so for the most part, I guess I should be glad I didn't make a huge mess over MYSELF!
Post-movie, it was late, so we headed back to Northridge, talking the whole way. We have plenty of differences (he's a fan of LOtR, I slept through the movies), but similiarities (bowling leaguers!) too. Plus Scott's just a generally cool guy. Flexible, but strong. He doesn't like being in the spotlight, I do. He's a great photographer (well if it's major, he must be!) while I... er, suck, for lack of a better word. He's traveled loads, I've only traveled some. He has a fraternal twin brother, I do... not. I did kind of tell him what happened with Michelle, since the subject of camping came up, and then my Dad going to Yosemite, and then me not ever being allowed to set FOOT in Yosemite because of Michelle's accident and then Dad's friend-- who died AT Yosemite, as far as I know. Well, I could have made it creepier, explaining about the whole "deadline" thing I've imposed on myself, but that might be too much of a sympathy plea.
Somehow, the topic shifted to weddings (Vegas weddings were pretty common this weekend), and I actually realized I've never thought about that kind of thing. He said every time he was at one, he got hot under the collar and somewhat paranoid-- I suppose he's in that "age range," and plenty of his friends are getting married, but he's not ready for that yet (should I say, 'thank goodness!?'). Me? I've never thought about it, really. I go TO weddings, I write ABOUT weddings, but me? I don't know, I guess the whole Mer-Will-Die-A-Spinster thing is still trapped in my head. Plus I'm not a gigantic fan of kids... o_O
I don't know. He hugged me goodnight (demi-awkward because Grandpa was looking at us, the snoop!) and that was it. He'll be at the Bookstore next Tuesday, so... yeah. ^_^ Maybe we can go bowling or something.
Okay, gotta jet-- much packing, sorority info-getting, and other stuff to be had. mata na~

Date: 2004-09-03 04:15 am (UTC)On a large sidenote: Tsubasa, xxxHolic, awesome titles, wish Tsubasa vol.2 would come out sooner. >_<
And kids suck, if I were to ever get married, man, I'd so be adopting.
:)
Date: 2004-09-04 02:39 am (UTC)Moreover, yes! I'm loving the dimensional warp that is xxxHolic and Tsubasa. Is there an ETA for the Vols. 2?
We should all adopt poor little kids from... Cambodia? Like Angelina Jolie did. Yeah. ;)
