Don't make me go Governator on your ass.
Aug. 30th, 2004 08:47 pmActivate this, pinhead.
It's official, I HATE ADOBE. No, I don't "hate" hate them, I just dislike them. With all that inflammatory debate we did in Speech class today about Hate Speeches, I should watch what I say I "hate." Don't want to instigate violence, you know. From the Adobe fiends. Oh yeah. Well anyway, so I was working with Mamono and Neko on integrating Tabletop Gaming techniques and character creation with what we do-- online, LiveJournal role playing. I, as usual, went the extra billion miles, and created a role playing on LiveJournal page, along with a sample character creation "sheet" for Seto, Yugi, and Anzu on the DMRPG.
Well, I was working off the Sailormoon RPG book, which, while informative, is a bit out-of-date in terms of the Tri-Stat system and BESM (Big Eyes, Small Mouth). So I tried opening my BESM PDF, which I downloaded from DriveThruRPG.com when Guardians of Order (the publishers of BESM) had a promotional thing. It asks me if I got this file off another computer, which I did, so I click yes. Asks me to go to an activation page, and enter my email address.
The problems begin. I have 3 email addresses-- only 2 of which I use regularly for accounts and that kind of thing. Both of them are Yahoo. Back when I used MSN Explorer, I had an MSN account, but I never check the email for it. I only use that account when I'm logged into Trillian and using MSN Messenger (and by the way, Trillian has started sucking ass. I think I'll switch back to DeadAIM and MSN Messenger, separate). Well, by default, MSN and Hotmail accounts are the infamous .NET-enabled. As far as I know, you can also enable OTHER emails to be .NET compatible, and I think I did that with both my Yahoo accounts. So I logged in using the MSN account, and apparently activated Adobe Reader on this comp. But when I asked Mom to log it in, she used my YAHOO account. We tried again-- with my other emails. Apparently she had a success with my YAHOO account, so I tried to activate *that* one over here. No luck-- I started getting the same "Server Code 27" error.
So I call Tech Support. I'm on the phone for several minutes (15-30, most times), getting redirected every which way. Since Service Pack 2 for XP was downloading and giving me troubles, I decided to call it quits for a while and take a nap. Now, I'm back and pissed off. I want to open my BESM, DAMMIT! I called Tech Support again, and, karmically enough, talked to a girl named Meredith. I was really hoping she'd be able to help solve my problem, so we worked together for an hour-- deleting accounts and activations, deleting temporary files, clearing caches... none of it, any good. The one thing that irks me is that before, the San Francisco Computer (aka OEMCOMPUTER) showed up in my YAHOO email (the one that worked for Mom) "Activations Under This Profile," but now it doesn't. And I can't activate this computer AT ALL, with ANY email address.
Tech Support pretty much gave up on me. I tried copying the file from the CD again, but same error. So now I've gone the extra mile, and contacted DriveThruRPG. Hopefully they won't brush me off as some desperate geek looking to pirate GoO. I'm not. Really, if I can't fix this error, I'll buy the damn book. But I'm ON the GoO ML, I participated in the promotion... I want my free PDF, dammit. I didn't know anything about "Digital Rights Management" until now, and frankly, I think it's a load of bull if it's causing all these problems. What if Mom had sold the OEMCOMPUTER, or ran over it with a MUNI bus? Huh? What then? She's already going nuts with all the wedding plans and stuff this week, and I don't want to call her and ask her to go through all that again, especially if it's not just going to "Point, Click, Work" for me over here.
*sigh*
I've got to work on my Media Notebook for Journalism, since it'll be do on Wednesday for me, as opposed to Friday, for everyone else. Can anyone tell me what "characteristics of communication components [source, message, channel, audience, noise, and feedback] contradicting" mean? Specifically, my page says "describe which of these characteristics appear, which are absent, and which are contradicted in your mass communication [online publishing of fanfiction] example." Does that make sense? Help... I really don't want to have to call Bober over the PHONE. -_-;
What else?
* I'm going to email Scott tonight. I know he doesn't come back till tomorrow, but is that tomorrow morning, in time for school, tomorrow afternoon, or tomorrow night? Regardless, I want to do something Wednesday. :) Movies at the Vine, yo. I need to get an eBook copy of Issac Asimov's "I, Robot." Unless Grandpa has a copy lying around the house here, which he very well might, given that the whole rec room is a veritable library. Speaking of Libraries, I've got to get one here in Northridge... which means submitting proof of residency here, which means finding that stupid Post Office form again. -_- Joy.
* I've run out of Allegra. I need to go to Kaiser next week and see various doctors to get my prescriptions back, my Kaiser status fixed for SoCal, blah blah...
* My eyeballs hurt. I still have to write a bunch of stuff. And there's a quiz on Chapters 3-5 in Speech on Wednesday. GREAT. JUST GREAT!!!

Date: 2004-08-31 08:24 am (UTC)BTW, if you haven't installed it yet, DON'T install Service Pack 2, a lot of glitches, primarily compatibility problems with a lot of programs. And you can't really delete it once you get it on the comp.
Now I find out.
Date: 2004-08-31 04:06 pm (UTC)Problems just LOVE stacking on top of one another, don't they? *wails*
But I will turn to you for BESM-related questions. Thanks! :)

Date: 2004-08-31 02:13 pm (UTC)As far as SP2, I agree completely with staplerx. Leave it alone for now until Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom, decides it's necessary to fix all the glitches.
Infinite what?
Date: 2004-08-31 04:07 pm (UTC)Okay, this is probably the dumbest question of them all, but what is d20? Does that have something to do with the dice/die involved in the game?
Re: Infinite what?
Date: 2004-08-31 05:05 pm (UTC)Just out of curiosity, how would you plan to incorporate dice into an online RP session?
Re: Infinite what?
Date: 2004-09-01 02:06 am (UTC)Basically, my friends and I were using the Tri-Stat system to create character charts-- that is, we worked with a set number of Character Points, Power Points, and, when we went over the set number of CPs, Defects. We designed characetr sheets, and I created a subsequent page about using tabletop roleplaying methods (as outlined in BESM's original RPG, the SMRPG) for LiveJournal.
....Yeah. :)
