This isn't easy at all.
Aug. 29th, 2004 03:29 pmI have to admit, I'm frustrated. I've really been looking forward to getting WDKY (11, especially) out and everything, but people keep on bringing up these little details that just make me hopelessly insecure about the whole darn fic. For starters, I really don't like OCs, but I had to bring them in for the sake of the plot. If you check out the WDKY Research page, you'll see just how many I have. Most really don't have very important roles (like the teachers, for example), but others (Laroque, Chieko) have larger roles that end up playing particular parts later on.
And then there's Téa and what some people consider to be outlandish OOC-ness in Chapter 10. Yeah, I know, drunk!Téa is not exactly easy to imagine, so I tried to justify it as best I could-- and as much as I hate admitting this, I'm putting a bit of myself into her, trying to weave my knowledge and experiences into her, so it seems realistic. If you get your heart broken and stomped all over, you might be prone to drinking away your problems, feigning ignorance, and all that fun stuff- even while knowing in your heart of hearts that it's futile.
This brings me to a very good point of DSF's, though... is Téa becoming a Mary-Sue? Sweet mother of Kaiba, I hope not. You know I hate Mary Sues. But god, what if DSF is right? I guess I overdid it with the guys liking her thing-- but I'm going to slightly justify it by saying DIALOGUE is not the same as FACT. What I (the author, the narrator) tells you as fact *is* fact for the course of the story... what is dialogue or thought is from the perspective of a singular character, so what they think or say might not be written in stone, and hard-core truth. That is to say, the guys back at DV8 easily could have been exaggerating saying that Téa had a crowd of guys always surrounding her. Then again, DV8 is a primarily "guy" club, with more guys than girls on a nightly basis, simply because it's smack on the border between gang territories.
And as for Joey's crush on her? That's going to come into major play/justification later on. WDKY, as I've said before, is about growing and change-- so I'll be referencing times from early canon, and of course, things that are completely non-canon at all. (I happen to be one of those weird people who think Joey and Téa would have been compatible in the first season, prior to his meeting Mai.) So, in summary:
* People exaggerate. In thought, in speech... but not in narrative. That's me, and that's fact.
* Yugi has to learn to get over his crush and accept himself for who he is, instead of trying to change on behalf of others. I don't exactly think he "works" with anyone during canon, so no, he's not going to get paired up in WDKY. Sorry?
* Kaiba has to learn to accept people and feelings. He was pretty much bred to think of everyone else (except Mokuba) as his rivals, and feelings as weaknesses. Now he's beginning to see otherwise, but despite being a genius, he's far from being an expert where emotions are concerned.
* Joey has a nasty past that's constantly trying to haunt him. It's made him who he is, but he doesn't exactly want to admit to that. It's going to come up time and time again throughout WDKY, and Téa (along with Joey's initial reaction when he met her) are going to come into play. Past relationships of any kind always have the power to strengthen future 'ships-- specifically Mai and Joey.
But good god, Téa must NOT become a MS or SI. Help me avoid that at all costs, PLEASE. (But, in defense of that again, I remind you that the DV8 guys have a tendency to think with their "lower head" rather than the one on their neck. Thus, they might not have seen Téa as the Win All most gorgeous girl either-- but rather, "an easy lay." I refer to Shrimp Lips...)
Anyway, so I was wondering if maybe someone made a Yu-Gi-Oh Mary Sue Litmus Test, as was done for so many fandoms, initially started by the grand maester Dr. Merlin herself. Apparently someone at Kyoku Geemu was going to do it, but they never finished-- the last post in the thread is April 10th. -_- Well, I might take a stab at it, especially since it's been a while since I've done any quiz programming. Plus, hey! Excuse to make cool Photoshop banner things or something... Anyone wanna help? If it happens that there are other Litmus tests out there, then I might just adapt mine to being a regular YGO Fic Quiz of sorts. Again, people can help if they so desire.
Working on skins for DRFA... a Mai Skin coming up, plus fixes for the Bakura skin. If anyone wants to input images or ideas (names, color schemes, etc.) for future skins, let me know.
Aaaand I have to get some homework done. Ciao!

Date: 2004-08-30 02:53 am (UTC)Every good author does this with every character they write. Heck, every bad authors does it too. Every character you write will have a bit of you in them, because you'll decide what they do based on what you would (or in the case some of them, wouldn't) do. You just have to avoid trying to fulfill(sp?) your own wishes through them. Putting a little bit of yourself into a character isn't the same thing as living vicariously through her.
I don't think there's a YGO-specific test, but there's a standard MS litmus test running around somewhere that can fit any fandom. I'll see if I can find it...
