I hate people who make excuses.
Apr. 15th, 2004 01:46 amw-cat was gone, but not out:
A/N: Okay, you know what? Fuck it. Fuck flaming, and fuck ‘constructive criticism’. They’re both a form of criticism, so it doesn’t make a difference to me. For as long as I REMEMBER, I’ve always hated ALL types of criticism because people are giving you shit on the stuff you’ve worked so hard on, and yes we all know that can be frustrating. So basically constructive criticism DOES make me feel worse (sorry I have severe mental conditions so don’t mind me ^^; I’ve been diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome when I was young so I do have lots of spazz attacks...). If you’re sick and tired of me not accepting this criticism, then SCREW YOU. Don’t even bother reading my stories. So what the hell...nobody can be perfect, and yeah I know we all have to take it hard sometimes...but my whole life is a wreck, and I don’t want to have anymore problems to deal with. I’m under depression and I have severe problems outside ff.net, so I can’t really handle all the pressure. Anyways, let’s just get on with the story.
Okay, I have friends with severe mental conditions (though last I checked, Tourette's wasn't SEVERE... it doesn't prevent you from accepting criticism. Okay, so you make noises uncontrollably, and sometimes you twitch. This has WHAT to do with accepting CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM?) and they still handle things like bad grades, bad reviews, and bad attitudes just fine.
What I hate is someone like w-cat that makes excuses for not being able to handle what is supposed to be HELPFUL reviews. They might not be showering her with praise, but hello, she's not making any money off of this; she's doing it for the fans, and if you don't please the fans, what the hell is the point? Why do authors bother posting OOC, badly written, inexplicable stuff and then use an excuse like "Well I don't care what you think?" I mean it's bullshit.
I can understand having severe problems IRL (believe me I KNOW... anyone who might have caught the atrocity that was "All Good Things..." before I removed it from FFnet might know what I mean) affecting your writing, but in real life, people aren't going to say "Aww, poor you, you have a mental condition." or "Aww, poor you, your grandmother just died, I think I'll bump your sucky paper to an A." Sorry ladies and gents, LIFE DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY.
Shit hits the fan, and yeah, it keeps flying. People might write fanfiction "for fun" or "practice," but believe it or not, the majority of writers out there take their craft (and yes, it IS a craft) VERY SERIOUSLY, and seeing someone flippantly make excuses PISSES US OFF. Pisses ME off, at any rate. This girl seriously needs to get a clue.
I like her writing, but she doesn't have to be so damn violent and stubborn about criticism! I don't need to know what deficiences she has in her brain, or what problems are making her very depressed.
I still believe FFnet removed the story for a reason, and chances are, it'll happen again.
Oh yeah...I’ve heard around that –some- people are posting up stories, like mine (well not just mine but many others), on their site and giving them low grade marks or ratings. This is to the people that are doing this: Maybe you should ask the author FIRST before posting it up? And with the low ratings or marks or whatever, wouldn’t that be a little downgrading to the authors who see the low marks on your page? Maybe you should drop the marking scheme and just post them. It’s not nice.
Oh, and I bet that w-cat is not-so-subtlely referring to BEA's fic section, and how it rates fics. Even if she isn't, I have this to say to that:
(1) The page clearly states that the opinions and ratings of any given fic are those of the reader, and if you have a problem with it, take it up with them. W-Cat has NEVER emailed me directly; she's just name-called me in her fic, and is probably doing the same thing right here, though she's not outright saying "Ooh, ooh, Mommy, mommy, someone wrote a bad rating and review for my fic! Make it go away!" -.-; Until she emails me saying (in a polite manner) that she has a problem with me, my reviews, or my sites, I have no reason to change anything.
(2) Go to Amazon.com. Pick a book, any book. Some people will like it and have posted good reviews, others will rain the fury of the seven hells on it with their anger and detrimental reviews. But guess what? People don't take every review at face value. Some people might still be intrigued by a summary and go to read it. The same goes with fics-- and reviews. Many of the reviews I put on there DO NOT criticize a story for its plot, but for its spelling, grammar, and characterization. These are key elements to ANY fanfiction, and if a fic doesn't successfully pull them off, then it DOES NOT deserve my glowing, happy praise. I don't need to ask an author's permission to state my opinion-- this is a free world we live in, you know! Besides, if I asked an author if I could review their fic, the answer would probably be:
Face facts-- you don't know when people read your fic or not. Every second, someone might be thinking-- should I review it? Or not? Good review, bad review? Or don't even bother? Sometimes I get fed up with fics and click out. I abide by the creed, "If you don't have something nice to say, keep your mouth shut." But... I don't believe that applies to when you're trying to be helpful. Of course, it's all subjective-- when does the line between "nice" and "helpful" blur? Some people think there's a line to be crossed there, and nice isn't helpful, or viceversa.
Hopefully I've made my point here.
As for the fic? Well, it lost its pull. It's actually kind of pathetic now, with Joey's OOC and horribly accented dialogue holding the fic together. Like some sort of popsicle-stick boat.
But... as they said on Reading Rainbow....
You don't have to take my word for it.

- No... uh... what are you going to say? Something bad?

and even though I dont read fics...anymore...that girl seriously has some self-image (?) issues, I mean, come on. It might suck to have constructive criticism, but it's better to have it when you're young.
And Mer, again, Happy (belated) Birthday!!!

Anyway, thanks again-- and yeah, CC is a better thing to "get over and through" when you're young, because if you can't take it when you're older, you could lose out on a lot more than some free time afterschool.
Bad attitudes = loss of job!
