The meme...dun dun dun da dun dun dun da da da da!
Yes, it's time for 30 Days of Sailor Moon, Day 12! It's the day after the iPad 2 launch and it's still crazy here at the Apple Store San Francisco. I've got a sore throat/cough and a sniffly/stuffed nose, but it's all good! I'm eating beef portobello with broccoli and potatoes for lunch, and it's comfort food of the healthy variety. Win!
Considering yesterday's topic, today's shouldn't be that much of a surprise. Wonder why the Outer System Senshi got this question before the Inner Senshi?
Once again, brought to you by Sailor Failures on Tumblr. Tumblr is a weird service, and even though I have one, I don't really (know how to) use it. I personally WANT to comment on things, and it bums me out when I can't. Sailor Moon Secrets being on Tumblr is cool, but it seems to take away the fun that the other fandom secrets comms have. Too bad the one on LJ has apparently died out? *shrug*
So I've got characters I think are pretty/handsome, characters that I liked when I was younger and characters I have a newfound interest in, a favorite Outer System Soldier...but now the favorite Inner of them all?!
That's hard. I mean, like I've mentioned in the past, Sailor Moon is the titular character, the heroine, the one whose exploits we follow most closely and whose growth we most hope for. She reminds me in many ways of Miaka from Fushigi Yuugi (no coincidence, I'm sure: Kae Araki, who voiced Sailor Moon at one point in Season 1 and later voiced Chibiusa, voiced Miaka as well): it simply doesn't make sense to me for someone to dislike her. But there ARE other cool characters, especially among the Inners.
They're all so different from one another, but they balance each other out, too. And Usagi is the glue that holds them--with all their idiosyncrasies--together. But if you count her as an Inner, I think it skews things: Usagi is the Princess/future Queen, regardless of what "team" is doing the guarding. So if the "Inners" are just Venus, Mercury, Mars, and Jupiter...then my favorite (right now) is...Venus!
My explanation here can't be very different from what it was for Day 3, but I do think she's very multifaceted: Minako, unlike the others, can't really fit into a "type." She's an idol chaser but not a kogal; she's a tomboy but still feminine and boy-crazy. She's smart, devoted, and sassy, but she's also lazy, fickle, and crude. How can she embody all these contradictory traits?! I don't know, but somehow she does it, and on top of it, she's a recognizable character in every form of canon. Even though PGSM put her through the most, changed her the most--she was still, at the very end--very much Minako.
I think it probably helps that Naoko came up with Minako first, and has supposedly said that Minako is her favorite character. That stands to reason that she's gotten a lot of focus, a lot of backstory, even though not all of it was investigated in canon. But Minako's "unknowns" make her a fun character besides, because we want to know more--will she ever succeed in love? Just how powerful is her emotional sense? If she was born from the waves of the planet Venus, like Adonis/Ace said at the end of the Sailor V manga, does that mean there was no other Sailor Venus before her, no parents/King and Queen of Venus? Is she truly a "lone" solider, yet a "sister soldier" to Sailor Moon, a Senshi who wasn't even supposed to exist? (I mean, when Queen Serenity sent her daughter, Endymion, and her whole court forward in time to Earth in reincarnated bodies, I don't think she necessarily accounted for the Dark Kingdom breaking her seal and causing trouble enough to warrant Serenity becoming the first--and likely most powerful--Senshi.)
Venus seems the most "real" to me of all of the Inner senshi, because she's so varied.
