Yay, I made it one week into the 30 Days of Sailor Moon meme, the same one found on Sailor Failures on Tumblr

Wow, ain't this a superficial question? Believe it or not, I actually like ALL of the Senshi and other characters--Naoko Takeuchi is a great artist, and I think the animators did a good job of taking her character style and animating it, but still being colorful, active, magical-looking, and even a skosh bit realistic, as far as proportions are concerned (that is, considering the varying heights of the Senshi and other characters, their ages, etc).

As the titular character, Usagi/Sailor Moon probably has the most art for her, and is going to be typically centered and all that. But that doesn't mean she's the prettiest, just because she has the most...

Actually, this is a really tough decision. I think each of the characters are really pretty and/or handsome in their own way. I already have favorites based on other things, like the actual personality of the character in question, so that might color my opinion of "pretty" or "handsome" a little.

I guess if you do take into account all the superficial qualities, then my opinions are as such:

Prettiest Anime Girl: I think I'm going to go with Rei on this one. I was reading "Warriors of Legend: Reflections of Japan in Sailor Moon (Unauthorized)" yesterday, and it pointed out that Rei is the Senshi with the biggest changes from manga to anime...and that's true, but I like her anyway. I LIKE the "feisty, cosmopolitan" version of Rei that is contradictory in her nature: she's the most traditional and Japanese of all the girls, with pale skin, long dark hair, and great respect for her duties as a Shinto priestess, but she's also got great fashion sense, a wicked sense of humor, and on occasion, she does like chasing after guys...maybe not to the degree that Minako and Makoto sometimes do, but still.... Rei in the anime embodies Japan of the early '90s, and she shines as a result. She might not be as stand-out as the other characters in terms of the whole series, but in a "pretty" lineup, she's definitely up there.

Prettiest Manga Girl: Neptune/Michiru Kaiou. She's meant to be the most elegant Senshi, and I think she is in the manga and in the artbooks, where she easily stands out from everyone else. I don't know what it is, but everything from her hair to her hands, her fashion sense to her posture, all scream "sooo prettty!" I can see why younger girls would see her and idolize her, because she has all of that going on, seemingly naturally.

Prettiest Live Action Girl: Ah, another tough one! You know, if Rei is the most changed from manga to anime, then Minako is the most changed from EITHER version of canon to live action. And yet...she's still Minako. It was so odd for me to see my favorite characters as actual Japanese girls, maybe even ones that COULD be 14, 15, 16 years old! Sure, they didn't have wild-colored hair, but they were still the characters I recognized in attitude and in spirit. I think Minako pulled that off best; she was fashionable, sometimes fun, but generally still took her duties as a Senshi very, very seriously. Unlike the Minako of the anime or manga, this version already WAS an idol, so that obviously made a big difference in her attitude and maybe even how she treated others, but I can see the anime and manga versions of Minako enjoying the live action version...though they might tell her to lighten up a bit! :P Ayaka Komatsu definitely exuded "Minako" with virtually everything she did in that role.

Most Handsome Anime Guy: Ah...the obvious answer is Mamoru here, isn't it? The guy has the fashion sense of a pet rock, though, so no. He'll be the most handsome manga guy, for sure. (He even has an EARRING in the manga! I don't know, for some reason that's kind of hot on him...) Okay, so if it's not Mamoru, then who? Motoki! For sure, definitely! Why? I have no idea. His smile and that almost-normal red-blonde hair of his? I wish there'd been more of him in the anime.

Most Handsome Manga Guy: Like I said up there, Mamoru! Naoko Takeuchi has a talent for drawing guys that are masculine while they're not ridiculously buffed-up or anything. I like that: Mamoru is elegant, studious, romantic, but still a fighter. Of course he's the ideal guy! And in the manga, there's no ugly green jacket paired with godawful lavender-gray pants! Blech! Like Rei, he's got a bit of the traditional Japanese going on, except with his deep, deep blue eyes. In retrospect, I think a lot of the fangirls from back in the day really focused on his eyes, because there wasn't a whole lot else for us to go on. Unlike brown (or any other colored) hair, there are really only so many synonyms for black hair. It's not all that interesting. But his eyes? Surrounded by that domino mask? Ooh, sexy. Plus they made for an interesting contrast against all the other blue-eyed characters, especially Usagi.

Most Handsome Live Action Guy: Motoki's too bumbling in the live action, and Mamoru I'm kind of apathetic about. I actually kind of like Kunzite. He's older and doesn't look a damn thing like his anime or manga counterpart, but I really like how he pulls off the "badass general" thing. He's very imposing, very intimidating...when he's in that Kunzite mode. When he wasn't (!), which was something unique to the live action, he had that "mysterious attractive, but possibly dangerous" thing going on. "The Devil You Don't Know," perhaps?
