Back once again with Day 2/30 in the Sailor Moon meme, from Sailor Failures on Tumblr.
It's hard to say "when I was younger," because I had rotating favorites when I was younger. Fickle much?! Well, I know I liked Serena (Usagi), even though she cried a lot more than I wanted her to. I mean, she's the heroine, but she got thrust into this situation where she has to fight monsters on top of all the other things pre-teens and teens have to deal with?! It's kind of crazy.
I think I started liking Raye (Rei) because the anime version of her was kind of "saucy," and she had this banter with Serena that showed she wasn't afraid to speak her own mind, but she sometimes came across harshly. But she and Serena were still best friends; I do think the anime shows that best. And, Raye being an Aries, guardian of the planet Mars and all...well, I liked that, too!
From the beginning, I'd been exposed to characters from Sailor Moon that it took YEARS to see in the dubbed anime. So I knew what Sailor Pluto looked like before I knew who she was or what she did or any of that. I really liked the manga illustrations I'd seen of her--in particular, this one comes to mind, because Setsuna is very fashionable there, and it's just beautiful art. But do you see the size of her breasts?! I mean WOW. Sorry Lita (Makoto), Setsuna's got you beat in the "talent" department. I think as a young girl, that kind of thing caught my eye, because I was very flat-chested. Setsuna represented everything I wanted to be: calm, collected, tall, big-breasted...and hey, nothing wrong with having a Big Ass Key™ topped with a beautiful gem, right?
And as the years passed, I decided I really liked almost all of the characters. There are some I can empathize with more than others--I'm an Inners girl all the way, with that one exception of Pluto--but generally I like how very different they all are from one another, and yet how they can all come together to support one another. I think Sailor Moon has a lot of messages, but friendship is definitely one of the biggies. And you see it in every incarnation of Sailor Moon, but most particularly in the anime and PGSM, I think.
I don't know if I've really answered the question. If I had to summarize all that blather, it'd be Sailor Moon and Sailor Mars, tied. Then Sailor Pluto, probably, with a smattering of the others (namely Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn) later on, until I just developed this smorgasbord-respect for the whole lot of them.
