Another meme. I'm bored.

Comment on this post saying you want to do this. I will choose seven interests from your profile and you will explain what they mean and why you are interested in them. Post this along with your answers in your own journal so that others can play along.

Ganked from [livejournal.com profile] rose_of_pollux, so she selected the seven interests; feel free to ask about other ones, but then expect me to ask about yours!

Azureshipping - The Seto x Anzu (Téa) pairing from Yu-Gi-Oh! The name has nothing to do with my handle (Azurite), but it's a fun thought. I think I got into it first after seeing the dub episode when Téa shouted at Kaiba atop Pegasus Castle after defeating Yugi for his star chips. I thought they had chemistry from that moment onward, and I kept watching the show.

Second was a fic I read...by [livejournal.com profile] geniusgirl, I think. After that, I was sunk. At first, the pairing wasn't very big or popular, especially considering how male-dominated the cast is (which inherently seems to translate to more yaoi/shonen-ai pairings than anything else), but those of us that did love the pairing got together and soon, we had C2s, a fanlistings, shrines, and tons more fellow fans. It's been great. I still run the fanlisting, and of course, am still slaving away on my fics for the pairing, mainly those in the "What Doesn't Kill You" series (and yes, it is a SERIES).

Fushigi Yuugi - I watched the anime first. Back when all anime came on tapes passed between friends who knew someone who knew someone, I watched a subbed version of this and loved it. Miaka's a lot like me, though over the years, I've wished she was a bit less hopelessly naive and cheerful. Still, I admire her for her strength in adversity, and her perseverance. She's got such a strong belief in those she cares about: it would be awesome to be on the receiving end of so much love.

I didn't buy the manga until it started coming out in the collected VIZBIG editions, though sadly, there are still editing issues that peeve me. I'm also reading Genbu Kaiden, the prequel that explains what happened to Takiko Okuda, the first priestess of the "Universe of the Four Gods."

Yuu Watase's works are shoujo through and through. While her art style seems very similar (many of her male leads resemble Tamahome with different hair), it's still beautiful. And it has matured over the years. Her stories are very emotional; I've probably cried a lot while watching the anime and definitely while reading the manga. In a word: NURIKOOOOOO!

I have ongoing fic for it, but I'm stuck on writing for WDKY before I try for other fandoms, even if I was in them/started fic for them before I got into Yu-Gi-Oh.

Dance Dance Revolution - I don't know when I first played it, but I do remember the first time I went to what was then Riptide Arcade at Pier 39 here in San Francisco. They had a weekly Bemani night when all the rhythm and music games were half-off, and that included DDR. I met tons of great people and had an incredible time playing DDR and the other Bemani games, plus others. I think DDR and Police 911 II have at least a small part in how awesome my legs look today. :)

I own a few of the console versions of the game, but I rarely play, mainly because my pad sucks, whether it's on the hardwood floor or carpet. I have these grips that are supposed to prevent sliding, but they don't, really.

It's fun to play whenever I go out to arcades or movie theatres. I'm a freestyler, though I'm very proud of how I've "perfect attacked" "When the Saints Go Marching" and my favorite song, "Break Down."

Sailor Moon - My first fandom. I love telling this story: it's burnt into my brain. So one day, my sister wanted to get me away from our brand-new IBM Aptiva, so she showed me this show on TV: a marathon! It had magical teenage girls with powers. Of course I was hooked. She gave me a sticker, and eventually I figured out that the series WASN'T at all like my favorite American cartoons, but was from Japan. That started a journey that's still ongoing today.

I like the anime more than the manga, mainly because that's what I encountered first, and even though it changed a lot of details, it's still VERY cool for what it did for the shojo genre, magical girls, and of course, anime becoming mainstream in the U.S. It's also got a lot of fun plot points that I adore working with, like Usagi and Mamoru's break-up in Sailor Moon R (Part 2) and the fact that the Starlights are male before they transform in Sailor Stars.

I've met so many incredible people through this fandom. Many of them are like my older sisters (which, considering the older sister that got me into this fandom in the first place has passed, means a lot), and even if I don't talk to them as much as I used to back in the day, they still mean a lot to me. They gave me a chance and helped shape me into the person I am today (for better or for worse, haha!). It's through them and those Sailor Moon-communities that I got into Japanese culture, found something to have fun with and be passionate about, and learned so much about fandom!

Role-playing - I never really did "serious" role-playing until I ended up as Anzu for the Duel Monsters RPG on LiveJournal, which is now defunct. I didn't know the first thing about online roleplaying, since my idea of "role-playing" was pretty limited to playing video games.

It's really fun (and often challenging) to put yourself in other characters' shoes, and always surprising to see what other folks do as a result.

More recently, I've role-played with a group of guys down in LA to the Big Eyes, Small Mouth (BESM) guide. We've done a Slayers 'verse (ended pretty quick, but was pretty funny), and left a really great Kingdom Hearts-based one open-ended. It's more challenging when you have people role-playing right next to you, and you're basing how you act off dice rolls, but it was a great time. I had fun doing it. Though I don't know if I could ever role-play someone who's shy and retiring or anything like that...my characters and I have to have SOMETHING in common!

Mythology - I've been into it since I was old enough to read. I devoured fairy tales and mythology like chicken nuggets. As a result, I asked lots of questions ("But why did Zeus sleep with that other lady if he's married to Hera?") and learned a lot, and when it came time to take quizzes in classes on Mythology, I was an old pro. I did manage to learn even MORE when I finally took Classic Mythology in college, though.

To me, "mythology" immediately brings to mind Greco-Roman myths, and it was knowing those that helped me understand fandoms that drew from them, like Sailor Moon. But other cultures' mythologies also played a part in those fandoms, so I got interested in them, too, like Hindi and Japanese. Mythology in general is just a cool subject.

Final Fantasy - I started with FFX, because it had awesome graphics. It was more or less my reason for getting a PS2. I'd been gifted with a used PSX before that, but I'd never played any of the other FFs until X came out. Weirdly, I didn't beat it until AFTER X-2 came out and I'd beat that (and I loved that game, by the way. I didn't think I would, considering how "fanservice-y" it looked), but I eventually did, and it was pretty awesome.

The Final Fantasy games are always a challenge and feature these great characters, awesome storylines, and amazing (and often bizarre) fandoms as a result. I loved reading all about the possibility of X and VII having a connection (the Same Worlds Theory), watching beautiful music videos featuring scenes from VIII (still playing that game, btw; stuck in the Deep Sea Research Facility), etc. I played a little of VI on the SNES, but I had to give the cartridge back; I now have started two save files for the Anthology, but I haven't touched them or FF IX in a while.

They're not my FAVORITE RPG video game, or even my favorite JRPG: that honor goes to the Star Ocean series, even though it's much shorter and now, is made by the same people (Square-Enix). But they are incredible for what they do and have done, and will likely continue to do. I'm not planning on playing XIII or buying a PS3 for it (the way I bought a PSP just to play the remakes of the first two Star Ocean games), but I am interested in hearing more about the story, the same way I learned about VII without actually playing it.

I'm a huge fan of Monty Oum's "Dead Fantasy" series of fanvids, and I interviewed him about it (see GamingDead.com) last year at AX. I hope to do so again this year, when the next few parts premiere.
