azurite: (disney - ariel ooh shiny!)

So, I finally got to the last save point in Kingdom Hearts. Needless to say I've got some questions and ideas. I may have spoiled myself silly about Kingdom Hearts II and the other games, like Chain of Memories and Birth by Sleep and 358/2 Days, but that doesn't mean I'll do it to others.

Okay, first off, what's the deal with Kairi? She's a Princess of Heart, yes, and that's great, but:
a) why doesn't her silhouette appear in the great stained glass window in the beginning? We see Aurora, Belle, Snow White, and Cinderella (who is oddly brunette, even though her actual character isn't when she shows up later on), but not Jasmine, Kairi, or Alice.

In fact, none of the remaining silhouettes even LOOK like those girls. Was it because the designers wanted to be vague and leave it a mystery as to who the other Princesses of Heart were, or because they themselves were undecided? (Ironically enough, the three silhouettes all have similar-shaped crowns, none of which would be appropriate for the three missing princesses. Jasmine doesn't wear a tiara/crown, Ariel didn't until Little Mermaid II (or her wedding scene, and even then, it was more tiara and less "crown"), and Kairi...well, duh!)

b) is she a "real" Princess? That is, is she royalty? She reveals that she's originally from Hollow Bastion/Radiant Garden, but we know that Ansem was the "ruler of that world." That could mean:
--Kairi's related to Ansem somehow, or she's his ward
--Ansem usurped power from the legitimate ruler who is related to Kairi, and there's no telling if it's male or not
--She's not a real "princess" (by birth) at all, and that's okay, because hey, neither is Alice

c) where did her body go after her heart went into Sora? Where did Riku find her, or did Maleficent know where she was all along and just "presented" Kairi's body to Riku?

d) Is it possible that Kairi "inherited" the Princess of Heart status somehow, e.g. from her mother, grandmother, or someone else? Was she always meant to be a Princess of Heart, or can it change, just like the Keyblade originally was meant to be Riku's? Can a Princess of Heart be corrupted, or be a "potential" Princess and then lose her abilities/powers/status somehow? Is there an OPPOSITE to a Princess of Heart? (A Princess of Heartless, maybe? Heh!)

Change of subject: just what makes a princess of "Princess of Heart?" Namely, why the heck was Alice a princess and not Ariel? At first, I thought it was because they just wanted to include Wonderland as a world to explore, but heck, they included Atlantica and Halloween Town, two places with keyholes but no Princesses of Heart.

Maybe there's a multitude of Princesses of Heart, but there's something that "activates" them in a hierarchy, so that the first seven are the seven necessary to unlock the final keyhole. This isn't Fushigi Yuugi here, where you've only got seven Seishi and if you lose one, you're fucked. Hell, Fushigi Yuugi even features one Seishi split into two, so it goes to show that the rules are meant to be bent, if not broken outright!

Can you tell I really wish Ariel were a Princess of Heart? I mean, I imagine it'd be a pain in the ass to make her human outside of the context of the movie --without Ursula doing it and Ariel losing her voice-- but it could be done without Eric being involved. There are all kinds of fun plot twists to make it happen: everything from amnesia to clones/dopplegangers.

Also, why the heck was Belle separate from the other princesses in Hollow Bastion (you know, after Sora freed their hearts with the dark!Keyblade)? Maybe it was for dramatic tension with the Beast (and let's face it, Belle would totally wake up from a Heartless-induced coma and immediately think "BOOK!"), but I just thought it was weird and somewhat foolish of her to go off on her own when the other Princesses were supposedly staying put in order to maintain the balance of dark to light in the keyhole area. I guess it may have been okay if it was Leon, Yuffie, and Aerith that helped the Princesses out, and then Belle just REQUESTED to go to the library, perhaps because she's capable of helping "maintain" the balance from afar AND do research in the library....

Hey, so, back to the Princess of Heartless idea:
* Ursula turned into Vanessa from The Little Mermaid
* Evil Queen from Snow White
* Corrupted Eilonwy from The Black Cauldron (she was kind of a snot to begin with, and I sort of doubt her actual-Princess status, so it might be fun. Plus, the villain from TBC was REALLY evil! I mean, Chernabog status!)

General Princesses of Heart:
* Ariel (because DUH!)
* Pocahontas (Disney considers her a Princess, so why not?)
* Mulan (see above)
* Tiana (from The Princess and the Frog; it'd be amusing if Sora traveled to early 20th century Earth!)
* Rapunzel
* Giselle (not a "real" Princess, but if we're just thinking about pure-hearted people, Giselle qualifies more than Alice, IMO)

(Random aside: Ever notice how in a lot of Disney Princess artwork, Ariel's there WITH HER MERMAID TAIL? I mean wtf, folks? Why would Ariel be in a tea party garden WITH HER TAIL? How could she get there? Why not just make her human and stick her in that pretty pink dress?)

Just to make things interesting:
* Nala (Lion King -- because doesn't Sora turn into a lion when he visits the Pride Lands in KH2 anyway?)
* Maid Marian (from Robin Hood -- because, like Nala, who said all the Princesses have to be human?)
* Megara (Hercules -- I hear she shows up in KH2. She's not a "pure" Princess of Heart by any stretch of the imagination, so her being a "Dark Princess" or even a "Dark Goddess" after she hooks up with god Hercules would be pretty interesting)
* Princess Melody (age up Ariel and give her daughter a chance in the spotlight, whoo!)
* Mei, Ting-Ting, Su (The real Princesses from Mulan)

I feel like I can finally kinda-sorta understand the complexities of the universe that [livejournal.com profile] obabscribbler so often plays in! At first, I just had sort of a superficial appreciation for it, because hey! Crossovers can be fun. But this one is a crossover in a whole new way--new adventures, new characterizations (somewhat), lots of possibility. Actually, it's similar to xxxHolic and Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, now that I think about it....

The other day, I read a fic where Rinoa finally showed up in the Kingdom Hearts universe (another aside: any other fics like that? Do recommend!), but it was a genuine crossover, in that it was FF8!Rinoa meeting KH!Leon. Yeah, LEON, not Squall. Guy from Radiant Garden, not Balamb or Cape of Good Hope or what-have-you. Even crossovers within "crossover universes" like KH have possibility. I always wonder about the characters that have yet to show up in the KH universe, or the characters that must exist but we don't hear or know much about (Sora's mom, anyone?).

I'm looking forward to Re: Chain of Memories and KH2, though I'm a bit terrified of the franchise expanding to the point where I can't keep up with it, like Birth by Sleep and 358/2 days. I don't care enough about characters like Roxas left to want to play a whole game revolving around him.... (actually, I'm all about Kairi. I want to see her play a bigger role in Monty Oum's "Dead Fantasy" series too, if possible)

Interesting theories/questions about Kairi. X3 And yes, I did wonder why Ariel was not a Princess while Alice was and your theory about her not having feet at the time was what I assumed it to be, too...

**snerks at the thought of Belle running to the library upon waking up.** Then again, she probably sensed the Beast was there and knew that was where he'd look to find her...?

I think Ursula-as-Vanessa shows up in KH2, but I'm not sure-- I haven't got that far yet (is only at the second visit to Port Royal...). XD

But was Eilonwy corrupted in the movie? I could've sword she was fine throughout it, and was only corrupted in the book version of The Castle of Llyr... (eee, I loved the Prydain Chronicles books as a kid. X3)

Yep, Meg is in KH2, but she doesn't do much. XD;

I'm pretty indifferent to Roxas, too. XD As for KH2, it's awesome so far. >3 Re: Chain of Memories I actually started, but then skipped because I've already played the GBA version and really wanted to get to KH2, but once I finish KH2, I'm going to go back to it. ^^

XD

LOL, I was content with beating the final boss. I gave up on finding all of the Trinity Marks. And trying to beat Sephiroth in the Coliseum... forget it! He beat me in three seconds. XD

Hmm, well, in the book series, Eilonwy is a bona fide princess of the House of Llyr, and she does act like a bit of a brat in the first two books, which is what the TBC movie was based on. And she did get easily corrupted in the third book. XD And if you don't mind a major spoiler about the end, let me know, and I'll tell it to you.

I was more annoyed with the movie for leaving out one of the major (and one of my favorite) characters-- Lord Gwydion! XD;
