azurite: (twilight - fursplode!)
[personal profile] azurite
On my way home from school today, I spotted a squirrel in its death throes. It had gotten run over right near where I usually meet Baba on campus: across the street from the fountain on Etiwanda.

It was flailing around like crazy but unable to get up off the pavement. Suddenly its tail snapped around a few times, and then it just flopped to the ground. I didn't know what had happened-- I hadn't seen a car hit it, and no one else near me on the sidewalk seemed to notice or care. I walked up to it and saw what happened: its head had been nearly crushed; its brain was leaking out the top of its head. There was blood all over its paws and the street. I saw it stare for a minute, and then its eyes started to close.

I was crying like a basketcase when Baba came to get me; I didn't know what to do, since it was already dead, but I would hate if Baba ran over it again, so I kept trying to say, "Don't run over it, don't run over it," even though she couldn't see the squirrel. She said it took her five minutes just to understand what I was hollering about. Thankfully, she didn't run over the squirrel again, but I still feel awful for some reason. It's not as if there's anything I could have done, whether the squirrel was alive or dead. But I felt disgusted that I was the only one with a sense of compassion for the poor animal.

And let me just say right now: I hate humans that don't pay attention to what they're doing. Not just to animals, but to anyone. Why should you do anything with half your attention? Put all your attention and knowledge into performing any action, do everything with full knowledge and understanding of as many possible impacts on as many outside parties as possible. BE AWARE. There's no downside.

Anyway, I've been trying to be more chipper. We had the second NSLS Presidential Call. Not as funny as the last one, but still helpful. I have the second part of the Presidential Training this week, too.

Baba had some "intellectual reading" for me, so I went to go see what she was talking about and she handed me a copy of Life & Style featuring the Octo-Mom. *shudder* Well, I paged through it anyway, because hey, tabloid-style rag-mags are funny!

There was an article about how Twilight may be falling apart before it even reaches the second movie, and that's making me smile. Even though I REALLY DISLIKE the canon, the movie was still slightly better than the book(s). That's probably the director's doing, but due to her busy schedule and possibly other behind-the-scenes drama, she's been outed for the next (and possibly the remainder) movie. But L&S seriously needs a copy editor, because they just made so many dumb mistakes...

"...now the vampires have bigger problems than garlic and crosses to overcome." Uh, what? While this might not faze people that are unfamiliar with Twilight (and honestly, why would they even be reading the article except to skim?), anyone who does know the canon would go "but those aren't problems for them at all!" Remember, Meyer disregarded common vampire lore by making HER vampires immune to garlic, crosses, etc. Everything that was ever a vampire weakness in myth is meaningless in Twilight.

"...actress Lucy Hale also auditioned to fill Jane's fangs..." Hey, L&S, Meyerpires DON'T HAVE FANGS. It's a wonder they can gnaw wild animals to pieces to get to their blood-heavy veins without making an awful mess of themselves, but hey! They're super-speshul-awesome-sparkly!1!1!!eleventy! vampires, SO WHY NOT!?

Also, Stephen King knocking Stephenie Meyer? FULL OF WIN AND AWESOME. I don't like King all the time, everyday, but this is one thing I will agree with him on. And by the way "She's not that good" is professional writer-speak for "She sucks terribly and I'm better than her any day of the week." Hail to the King!

Apparently Meyer has gotten so whiny about Midnight Sun (oops, almost called it Midnight Shun... hahaha!) being leaked on the 'Net that now she's not writing it all! Why the sudden loss of maturity, Meyer? Before she was at least saying, she knew who did it based on the version released, and she'd changed and/or added enough to the story that she felt comfortable continuing to write it. Now she won't at all? Boo! At least MS had slightly better writing, even if it was coming from the vampire of super-stalker-control-freak Edward-Sir-Sparkle-Face.

Interestingly enough, I might just get dragged into this fandom. [livejournal.com profile] loki_onyx of [livejournal.com profile] the_circlet mentioned something of a Twilight rewrite challenge coming up someday soon, and I did have that godawful plot bunny that would more or less reboot the series and make Bella more in line with my kind of heroine (which is to say "a character" as opposed to "a cardboard cutout" or "skin that the reader can shimmy into"). If it actually happens, this LJ will be the place to see the horror and laughter unfold. Stay tuned.
