Squicks and a dare
Oct. 19th, 2007 03:28 pmI've just realized I have another squick besides slash: threesomes. I LOVE triangles, because it's human, and adds a lot of drama, but when I read about halfway through the first of only TWO Grissom/Sara/Nick (or G/N/S, as it may have actually been... I'm too afraid to go back and find out) fics on
geekfiction, I had a sinking sensation that Grissom-the-voyeur (spying on Nick and Sara practically getting it on --though I'm a GSR fan to the last, I can totally see Nick and Sara together for a bit, and even Greg and Sara. They're both a bit out of Sara's league, IMHO, but considering how they both seem to like her, I could see it for a brief fling. I can also see them being okay with it ending and her "ending up" with Grissom, too; with anyone else, I don't see that working out: it'd be too awkward) wouldn't be satisfied just watching and/or feeling up Sara once he revealed that he'd been spying on them the whole time. I mean, it's (er, I hesitate to use this word) "doable" for Nick and Grissom to BOTH get Sara at the same time, but... well, ow. So I stopped reading, even though part of me wonders if my gut instinct was right. And you can only know by reading, but... well, I'm in no mood to be "scarred" for life. There are some times when hitting the back button is just TOO LATE. (And why read what's not up your alley?)
So I'm perusing my FL and read a rather interesting
fanficrants "rant" about someone who got a review making reference to an old 4chan thread about "the Holders." It's basically an original forum "series" of sorts-- a choose-your-own-adventure mixed with mystery, fantasy, sci-fi, and horror. Good shit, in other words. There are 538 objects in the world-- originally 2538, but 2000 were lost. They appear in a number of forms, everything from what looks like your average everyday Rusty Keychain to an actual woman. Some people seek the items to see what they do; others seek to keep them forever separated. Once they were one, but they were separated. Something will happen if they are ever brought together again, but what? You can only know by embarking on the journey...
Okay, so you'd really have to be mental to actually do some of the things the prompts say to do (going to a mental institution or halfway house to ask for someone who is the "Holder of **" (** in this case being whatever the item in question is). But the items and whoever came up with them and what they do is actually pretty bitching, and... well, if CLAMP weren't doing something (with a lot less humor) in Tsubasa: RC and xxxHolic, I would say it could be a kick-ass manga.
Failing that, fanfiction. (Now, supposedly, the spammer in question, FBI-san of FFnet, will be writing this story. This person is pretty much just spamming FFnet with the snippets which may not even be his/hers, and has no other stories to indicate there is any experience in writing said fic-- or what universe it might be in. So, who the hell knows? One thing's for sure, with these as prompts, it can go ANY direction. Maybe it should be a community for a fic challenge, a'la 30kisses? Or I could always invent a new list... except not, because that'd be Just Plain Wrong) I'm talking THE ULTIMATE CROSSOVER. Consider this a dare for the bored or masochistic.
The following notes were found next to the body of a blind man, his body chewed on by numerous cats that found their way into his apartment. There was also a series of large gashes next to the man's body as though something had cut the hardwood floors, nearly two inches deep and as long as an arm. The man's body was undamaged by whatever caused the gashes. Medical Examiners who examined the body were unable to find any cause of death, and aside from the cats that ate parts of his corpse the man showed no signs of death, not even rigor mortis. It's been said that the body was sent to the lead government of whatever country the man was found (reports differ, some say the United Kingdom, others the Former Soviet Republic, Australia, China, and of course the United States.) but was lost, or disappeared, in transit. The notes, however, remain. Though none can speak for their authenticity.
Hidden around the world are a group of objects, seemingly chosen by some higher power in an arbitrary fashion. It's said that whoever the higher power is created the universe only a short while ago, much later than science believes (Some say the universe is as young as one year old, others believe it was created shortly before the first world war). Some say that when the Items are brought together the world as we know it will end, and some say the world will truly begin.
Whatever the purpose a random sampling of the population has been driven to find these things, either to Protect them, Destroy them, or Reunite them. These people are gifted from birth by a preternatural desire, an obsession some might say, to go forward with this goal. Many would die to accomplish their goal. Many more would kill. These are the Seekers, their gift is their curse, their only lot in life is to find the Items. Anyone who comes into contact with an Item with knowledge of what it is runs the risk of becoming one of the Seekers. The lucky ones are satiated by a single, simple, Item. Others spend their life searching. The Items themselves can be anything. From something as simple as a thumbtack to something as complex as a living creature. Though some are used by Seekers whose wicked souls taint the Items (though some say the opposite is true) but all of them can be used for the greater good or personal gain.
There are rules though: A Seeker can never give an Item away, it can only be taken by force, it must be earned fairly, or the owner must have died a natural death. An Item can never be tossed away. If it is, it will find it's way to the owner through a series of coincidences. The legend of the black pearl is a tale of one such Item. A Seeker must take care when handling an Item, or run the risk of becoming insane. They then become a Keeper. A Keeper is an immortal shell of a Seeker, forever protecting their precious. A Keeper will ask a question, series of questions, or present a riddle or puzzle of logic to the Seekers that encounter it. Anyone who completes the trials is deemed worthy of the Item, those who are not free the Keeper and become the new Keeper.
Seeker - Those that seek an Item.
Keeper - Those driven insane that guard an Item.
Holder - Those that possess and can use an Item. (Those not worthy of possession become Keepers.)
The Lost Ones - Those that have become lost in their goal for the Items (protection, destruction, separation, gathering... perhaps there is another goal?). They will not hesitate to kill those that interfere with them.
First off, you've got a quest to find these Objects. It's best to introduce the objects before considering who might be going after them, for what purpose, etc. Without further aideu, the list of KNOWN, NUMBERED objects. (Following will be the unnumbered objects.)

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it is...
(1) Assemble a team of the finest-- minds, body, hearts, spirits. Whatever you wish. But it is highly recommended to have a large team, with more than one person who is particularly strong of (X), wherein (X) is mind, body, heart, spirit, or perhaps whatever else you choose. You, as the Chosen Seeker, know whom to select based on the Known Objects.
(2) Your team may grow or shrink as you see fit, and as your quest progresses. You may even disperse your team, but know that doing so runs the risk that you will have mutiny, or revolt against your cause.
(3) What is your goal? This may be known before you start your search, but it must affect those whom you chose to be on your team, and will continue to affect them as they search. It may even change, for you or for them. There will be others contrary to your goal that you will encounter on your journey.
(4) Though it is your team, you are not required to travel with them. You may give them guidance, if you wish, in any form you desire. You may even be content simply pulling the invisible strings of Fate to bring your team together, to initiate their search and imbue them with your goal, and watch them from afar.
(5) Your quest begins. Seek the items. Learn more of the items. Only items which are named may be mentioned on your quest; should you progress to the point of having found all of the named objects, you may proceed to indicate the names of those which are as-yet-unknown to the rest of us. You may not use the names of Parody Objects, for they are blasphemousand stupid.
(6) Your Quest will end with the coming together of the 538th and the 2538th Items. What will become of you, your team, and the Items now? Only you can decide.
In a nutshell, write a fic about a team of people that you want to seek out the items. They can know each other from canon, or you can somehow bring them together from other canons. You can even toss in an original character or two, but try not to overdo it. If you decide to partake in this quest, you may not be a Mary-Sue or Gary/Marty-Stu. Only the "He" mentioned in the Items, by the Keepers or Holders, has a status worthy of being called a Gary-Stu. (And as previously mentioned, you are not to use the Parody Items. You can make the quest for some or all of the items humorous, if you see fit, but you probably shouldn't name Him Gary or Marty-Stu. It will only piss Him off, and trust me, you don't want to do that.)
You should have members of your team that defect/revolt/mutiny and/or die. You should have opposing forces, whether they are wholly separate teams or individuals.
You may consider what has happened to the 2000 lost items, but honestly, don't try to name/find them. You'll only give yourself a headache.
You should, at some point, disclose how your team found out about the Items and began their journey. What is the reason each member of the team has joined and agrees to go on the journey and follow the goal you have established? How did you/any one of them obtain the Thumbtack and/or the Notes which first opened the world of the Items?
If you so desire, you may also disclose --if you even discovered!-- the truth of he who wrote the Notes and was originally the Holder of the Thumbtack.
If you desire, you can read the forum discussions at 4chan and on the Wiki and gather more information on the Objects. No one can penalize you if you have contradictory information from these sources, but you should use the Wiki's articles for the descriptions of the objects and their Holders.
More information...
1. The Objects were created by Him. The event destroyed the world. This was a conscious effort by Him. (Objects 3, 19, and 101)
2. The Objects can be destroyed. (Objects 12 and 74)
3. The Objects can be stopped. Doing so however will cause a cataclysmic event. (Object 43)
4. The Objects were placed in a state of hibernation, and have yet to awaken. (Objects 29 and 38)
5. Several failed attempts were made to destroy the Objects. This includes immolation, shattering, consumption. One attempt to destroy them almost succeeded. (Objects 27, 30, 88, and 109)
6. The Objects are not in their original form. Before, they were something else, and their change was for very simple reasons. It may have been due to their impending death. (Objects 82 and 87)
7. The Objects have emotional processes, including fear, hate, pain, and greed. (Objects 13, 23, 65, 66, 79)
8. The Objects do not kill everyone when they are gathered, although the innocent are the first to suffer. (Objects 51, 85, and 89)
9. The Objects have been gathered on more than one occasion. They are destined to be brought together by a person again. (Objects 9, 11, 26, 58, and 63)
10. The Objects have been scattered on more than one occasion. They were once scattered by a person named Koth at a tower, which now serves as a prevention method from them reuniting. (Objects 2, 61, 68, and 100)
11. The Objects have a task for which they are intended, both individually and as a group. These tasks have yet to be completed, and they have been abandoned. (Objects 28, 40, and 42)
12. A Chosen Seeker will deliver our last hope by gathering select Objects. (Objects 48, 90, and 92)
13. People other than the Chosen Seeker will seek the objects, potentially to gather them. (Object referenced has been lost to wikiChan.)
14. The Holder of the Cosmos opposes their gathering. It is his duty to stop any who would seek it. (Object 67)
GOOD LUCK!
For the record, if anyone ever wanted to do a massively-massive fanfic round-robin, I would so do this. But I mean a real fic, not a CYOA where it follows the style of the established Items and Descriptions.
I, for one, know Sailor Pluto or Chibiusa would factor into the whole Key of Time item. It's just too perfect. Some of the descriptions are great, and would make for particularly dramatic and/or angsty character pieces.
There's also an item that's a Tattoo, which reminded me of Yuuko removing Fai's magical tattoo in the first volume of xxxHolic. Wouldn't it be interesting if Yuuko were watching all this?
So I'm perusing my FL and read a rather interesting

You are not required to disclose --if you can even discover-- the fate of he who wrote the notes in the first place)

You may not use the names of Parody Objects, for they are blasphemous

Date: 2007-10-19 11:33 pm (UTC)Are you talking non-canon? Because you're talking about CLAMP here and um.... most series have canon slash. xXxHOLiC has strong backing for Doumeki/Watanuku, in TRC there are several gay parings in their crossovers and KuroFye is pretty much canon. If you're talking CCS, which is linked to both HOLiC and TRC, there is also Touya/Yukito (which is also canon in TRC) and Tomoyo->Sakura (which is also canon in TRC in the piffle arc)
I bring this up because I literally don't understand how one can be squicked by slash and enjoy CLAMP at the same time.

Date: 2007-10-20 12:32 am (UTC)I'm well aware of CLAMP's canon homosexual pairings; I acknowledge them but don't actively seek out fic or doujin for them. I'm not going to deny their existence (canonocity?) or whatever, but I'm not a fan of them. To each their own.
But the slash thing for me is old news-- the whole point of the first paragraph was threesomes. I go looking for a triangle fic and I find a threesome, which I've discovered, does not float my boat. And the threesome in question was from CSI, not anything CLAMP-based.

Date: 2007-10-20 12:40 am (UTC)Though I'll admit that I find it odd that you're squicked by slash in general. I don't get it. It's not like all CLAMP gay pairings are the same.

Date: 2007-10-20 12:50 am (UTC)I'm squicked by slash in general. It's nothing resulting from CLAMP or whatnot; it's just never really been my cuppa tea.

But to be squicked?

Date: 2007-10-21 03:12 am (UTC)Cuz, in my mind, the Items in question, automatically became powers and abilities and in this (second) season, there is a little girl who can find anyone she thinks about and only one person she's afraid to find because he can See her. And that person in question seems to be killing off old heroes in a systematic fashion.
And then there's Sylar who, until recently, went around aquiring powers (which could be construed as Items, in my book) from other heroes by slicing their heads open. Then, presumably because of the events of the season one finale, he lost all of the powers he'd aquired, including his own initial power.
Plus, every time you turn around, there's a person with a new ability popping up and each person uses their ability differently (ie. for personal use or to save the world). The possibilites for the different types of powers is endless and yet there seems to be a list that was generated by figuring out the genetic coding that shows up specifically in individuals with powers. And that list has to end some time... maybe with the 2538th person?
Weeeeeeeird.
'Course I'm probably looking WAAAAAY too much into this, but the birth of the concept has entered my mind and will now be stewing. Possibly forming fanfics. Shit. *runs off*
