I challenge you to a [fanfic] duel!
Sep. 16th, 2007 09:10 pmSo I'm going through Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist Volume 9 for WikiFic (Newly upgraded to MediaWiki 1.11! YAYZ!) and I'm trying to figure out the whole time sequence of when Otogi's father dueled Sugoroku, lost, etc. etc.
Near the end of Vol. 9, Otogi Sr. reveals "it's been twenty years" since he last dueled Sugoroku. With this mind, some simple math:
* Sugoroku Mutou is 72 years old at this time. We get this info from the Gospel of Truth guide which was published around the same time as this arc/the Battle City arc.
* Both Yuugi and Otogi are 16 years old at this time. So the duel between Otogi Sr. and Sugoroku took place before either of them were born-- four years before in fact, which, according to Otogi was "long before we were born." I guess that correlates.
* When Sugoroku dueled Otogi Sr. he was 52 years old. More likely than not, his child/ren were already in their late teens or 20s. By the time he's 56 and Yuugi is born, Sugoroku has (or will shortly) go on his last adventure and get the Millennium Puzzle. He'll retire after that adventure, and go on to own the Turtle Game Store.
--> What's interesting is that Otogi Sr. dueled Sugoroku for something related to the Millennium Puzzle, but it' seems impossible that it's the Millennium Puzzle itself, since Yu-Gi-Oh! Millennium World Vol. 1 seems to show that Sugoroku retires after he is shot in the tomb of the Nameless Pharaoh. BUT that chapter is actually dated-- 1960, which means it took place *36* years before the start of the series (1996... unless we go by the publication date of the GOT, which is 2002). This either implies that Sugoroku kept playing even AFTER he was shot/got the Millennium Puzzle, or the series has a completely different time sequence than we thought.
We can always take the easy assumption, and say that since Sugoroku didn't really "lose" in the tomb, he kept on playing games-- so what point was it that he decided he'd lost and retired? Was it after he'd spent years trying to assemble the puzzle with no luck, and then Yuugi was born, so Sugoroku decided to pass it onto him? Or was it a while AFTER Yuugi was born, perhaps when the boy started to demonstrate gaming prowess, or something else?
(We don't know how old Otogi Sr. really is, only that playing the Devil's Board Game aged him incredibly in appearance)
ANYWAY... no matter how you dice it (!), Otogi had to have been born *AFTER* his father was scarred. Unless, of course... he's not really "Mr. Clown's" son at all. I challenge you to write a ficlet that explores this rather interesting facet of our favorite dice master... and post the links to your ficlet in the comments!
Of course, you're more than welcome to explore the other aspects of this, as well-- be it Sugoroku *OR* Mr. Clown, or simply discuss this "twisted" plot.

no subject
Date: 2007-09-18 01:59 am (UTC)There is the possibility that, despite being retired, Sugoroku was still taking on apprentices, in hopes of being able to retire with someone left to carry on his legacy of gaming. There are a lot of ways to explain that, I think.
And you're not spoiling me. XD But...I haven't touched YGO in ages, so I might be off on anything I said, and props to you for picking on a subject to make me come out of the woodwork. 8D
