How your electives are being cut
Apr. 29th, 2003 01:18 pmThis mainly applies to students in California, namely high school students who are the most impacted by the idiotic Governor's educational budget cuts. I find it so shameful that despite the defecit CA is in, this guy who supposedly placed education as his "top priority" is shorting us out like this. And now it's even more visible than it was before. I have teachers determined not to give up, and others ready to move on, move out, and get the hell out of CA. So here's how your favorite electives (the first classes to go) get weeded out:
Does the class assist in a school-to-career transition?
Is it comprehensive (cover a variety of area)?
Does it generate money?
Does it have school-wide impact?
Can it be combined with another class?
Can it meet as a club or a team?
Is it popular by student request?
Can it be supported by fundraising?
Does it have a two or more period block?
Is it necessary for graduation requirements?
Now you know-- you might want to prove your administrators and teachers wrong by having your fellow classmates answer these questions from THEIR point of view. Maybe then they'll see things differently. Already I have learned that Journalism is being cut, and Mr. Diesel (as much as he's been irritating me lately, he's a great teacher) is most likely going to be resigning. It's sad how something you can dedicate yourself so much to (or even be lazy to but still love) can just disappear so easily. I know I'm not the only one who's being affected by this, but I wonder, does anyone else even care? I know I'm not the only high schooler in this group, and as a matter of fact, it shouldn't matter whether you're in high school this year, next year, or any other year. This affects colleges too, but in a different way. Someone's got to do something. This is going too far.
And, as a post script, I'll write a longer entry all about my weird, hectic, and overall blah weekend later on... when I have those funny headlines to use as my subjects. Gah, and I have to finish 33 more pages of Hinata 120% by this evening! And buy my prom dress! GAAAAH!!! ;_; Himiko-sama, this is too much... I'm so busy and slow and stressed...!!
