Ugh... what a day. Not because anything big happened (I aced my skit without Scott being there. He dropped the class and we're still getting along. Whatever) but because I ended up getting a very nasty stomachache (anxiety attack + lack of sleep + waffles/bad milk? = sick Mer) while at work. Thankfully, two bathroom runs of about 15 mins. each was enough to get K and P to send me home. ^^; Yay. I ended up drinking some water, taking some pills Grandpa gave me, and by 6:45 when Grandpa and I had to leave for the Northridge West Neighborhood Council Meeting (which I'm reporting on for Story 1 in WRPII/Reporting for the Gov't), I was feeling a bit better. I survived off mints, and now I just polished off a rather nummy PB&J.
Anyway, I decided to find out what classes I have to take for my GE, before I can be considered upper-division. It's possible to go through your whole college career without ever being upper-division, if you take some of your GEs every year, rather than finishing them in your first few years. Well, I can handle 15 units pretty well, and I think 17 or 18 is my unit cap (with my current GPA), but here's the lo-down:
* for B1 (Sciences) - I have to take BIOL 100/L (4 units)
* for B (general) - BIO 220 (2) - Natural Ecology (I think)
... this will bring my total amount of units in the "B" sciences category to 9 units, the required minimum. I already have 3 units from Astronomy last semester.
* for C3 (Humanities) - WS 360 (3) - Feminist Ethics
* for D (Geography) - WS 320 (3) - Women & Urban Life OR GEOG 330 (3) - California Geography (with the same hawt teacher I had in freshman semester!)
* for F1 (Comparative Cultural Studies) - FLIT 150 (3) - Gateways to Western Civilization: Greece & Rome
* for F2, minor, and study abroad pre-req - FLIT 370 (3) - Modern Japanese Culture
As you can see, this brings the total to 18, without ANY units for my major (Journalism) and only ONE for my minor (Japanese Culture)... and I'm not even sure if you can have something count BOTH for your GE and your minor. I still have credit from the Japanese 1A I took at CCSF to count for F4 (which is a "null" category, where all the sub classes count for either F2 or F3), and the Japanese class I'm taking now (for my minor pre-req) could theoretically count for whatever 1A doesn't fill. Thus, FLIT 370 can be exclusive to my minor, if it works out that way.
What I want to do is take some Winter 05-06 courses, or possibly some Summer 06 classes, so that when Fall 06 starts, I have all my GEs out of the way and I'm eligible for Study Abroad. But all my confusing questions will be answered at the workshop in October, so... ^_^ yeah. Still, I wonder how to decide what to take next semester, and what to save for Winter or Summer? I guess I have to wait until the Winter catalog comes out. :P
GE stands for General Education. I don't know about other states, but it's required to take these units at California universities. It varies from place to place, and CSUN has some of the highest (in semester units) requirements for GE-- 58 units. Now imagine, if 12 is a full course load and 15 is the cap for most students, how many years does it take JUST TO COMPLETE GEs!? ^^;; Yeah, so you can understand why I'm trying to do this.
Anyway:
We have different GE sections, divided up by letter (A-F). You can meet the various requirements by taking AP tests, credits at community college, or completing the classes at university:
Section A
A.1 (Written Composition) - I met this requirement by passing my AP English Language & Composition test with a 3.
A.2 (Critical Reasoning) - I met this requirement by taking that annoying-ass Philosophy class last semester.
A.3 (Mathematics) - I met this requirement by taking the lowest level of math there is at CSUN: Math Ideas.
A.4 (Oral Communication) - I met this requirement by taking the Fundamentals of Public Speaking in my freshman/first semester.
Section B
I have to take at least one lab class associated with a lecture course I take from one of the below (it's going to end up being BIO 100/L) and at least one more course to total 9 units.
B.1 (Biological and Physical Sciences) - I plan on taking BIO 100 to fill this requirement.
B.2 (Earth Sciences & Astronomy) - I met this requirement by taking Elementary Astronomy last semester.
* - I plan on meeting the other 2 units I need for this course by taking that class in Ecology.
Section C
C.1 (Literature) - I'm currently filling this requirement by taking Greek & Roman Mythology.
C.2 (Fine Arts) - I'm currently filling this requirement by taking Creative Writing, but I also got an additional unit from Ballet last semester.
C.3 (Philosophy & Religion) - I want to take Feminist Ethics (WS 360) to fill this requirement, next semester or in the winter/summer.
Section D (Social Sciences)
I have to select at least 9 units from 2 different disciplines (departments).
I already took World Geography for 3 units, Introduction to Sociology for 3 units... and now I need one more course for the last 3 units. I was thinking about taking either WS 320 (Women & Urban Life) or GEOG 330 (California Geography) to fill that requirement.
Section E (Applied Arts & Sciences)
I filled this requirement by taking JOUR 100 in my freshman year. (I think my MSE 105 class in Introduction to Computer Graphics Tools, aka AutoCAD, also filled this requirement.)
Section F
F.1 (History of Western Civilization) - I plan to take Gateways to Western Civilization: Greece & Rome to fill this requirement.
F.2 (International Cross-Cultural Studies) - I plan to take Modern Japanese Culture to fill this requirement. If it can only be applied to my minor, then my Japanese 1A from CCSF will apply here. (If I study abroad, I don't NEED to take a course here, which makes it all pointless anyway, as the credits will already be in.)
F.3 (Intra-National Cross-Cultural Studies) - My current Japanese course can apply here, assuming they don't raise a tiff because the class doubles as a pre-requisite for my minor (Japanese) courses. I can also take JOUR 371, Women & the Media, to fill this requirement, but that would be for my major as well, and I think the school DOES have a problem with that.
F.4 (Foreign Language) - Currently my CCSF course applies here. I'm not sure where my JAPN 101 course will go, or my 102 course when I take it. I wonder if you even need to fulfill F4, if the credits end up applying to either F2 or F3 anyway?
Title V requirements
1 (American History, Institutions, and Ideals) - I met this requirement by passing my AP US History test with a 3.
2 (U.S. Constitution) - I plan to take POLS 355 American Governments, to fill this requirement. This class would also fulfill the 3rd requirement, for California State and Local Governments.
Major (Journalism) Lower Division Core Requirements
I only need to finish my Visual Communications (JOUR 250) and Writing, Reporting, and Ethics II (WRPII, Reporting for the Government) courses this semester to finish up my core requirements for my major. It starts getting more complicated once I get into my concentration, Magazine Journalism.
Journalism Upper Division Core Requirements
- Upper Division Core: JOUR 400 Mass Communication Law & Ethics (3), JOUR 498 Tutorial (1)
- Lecture Elective Requirement: JOUR 371 Women, Men & The Media (3)
Magazine Concentration Requirements
Area A: JOUR 310 (WRP III) (3), 330 (Editing) (2), 331 (Graphics) (2), 397B (Newspaper Practicum) (2), 460 (Magazine Journalism) (3)
Area B: JOUR 495 (Investigative Reporting)
Area C: 4 units of any upper division journalism electives, except 390, 395, 397, 398, and 498. The total has to come to 4 units. I was thinking about taking JOUR 350 - Photojournalism, and perhaps get an internship for 1 unit.
* I have to take 310 before I can take 330. I can't take them concurrently.
Minor or Collateral Field
It has to be at least 15 units upper division... and since Japanese didn't apply, Creative Writing will be the minor that applies for that.
Lower Division Minor (CW) - 6 units required
A. Creative Writing - ENGL 208: Creative Writing (3)
B. Literature - ENGL 275: Major American Writers (3)
Upper Division Minor (CW) - 18 total units required
A. British & American Literature (3 units) - Select one course from the following:
* English 380 Mark Twain
* English 414 Chaucer
* English 416 Shakespeare: Selected Plays
* English 417 Shakespeare: A Survey
* English 418 English Drama to 1642
* English 419 English Drama 1660-1880
* English 420 Milton
* English 443 English Literature of the Middle Ages
* English 449 The English Renaissance
* English 452 The Early 17th Century
* English 456 The Age of Enlightenment
* English 458 The Romantic Age
* English 460 The Victorian Age
* English 466 Major British Novelists I: 1700-1815
* English 467 Major British Novelists II: 1815-1900
* English 473 American Literature 1607-1860
* English 474 American Literature 1860-1912
* English 477 Major American Novelists I: 19th Century
* English 478 Major American Novel II: 20th Century
I put all of the above up there because I don't know which one to take yet! I bolded the ones I'm leaning toward.
B. Twentieth-Century Literature (3 units) - Select one course from the following:
* English 427 Drama from Ibsen to the Present (3)
* English 461 Modern British Literature (3)
* English 462 Contemporary British Literature (3)
* English 463A Modern Poetry (3)
* English 463B Contemporary Poetry (3)
* English 468 Major British Novelists III: 1900 to the Present (3)
* English 475 American Literature 1912-1945 (3)
* English 476 Contemporary American Literature (3)
* English 478 Major American Novel II: 20th Century (3)
I put all of the above up there because I don't know which one to take yet! I bolded the ones I'm leaning toward.
C. Creative Writing (6 units)
* English 308 Narrative Writing (3)
* English 408 Advanced Narrative Writing (3)
D. Senior Seminar (3 units)
* English 490 Senior Seminar in Narrative Writing (3)
E. Electives (6 units)
* ENGL 371 (Issues in Jewish-American Writing) (3)
* ENGL 433 (Women Authors) (3)
Japanese Minor
Pre-Requisites
* JAPN 101/C - Currently taking (I wonder if my Japanese 1A fills this requirement? If so, why couldn't I just go straight into 102?)
* JAPN 102/C
Lower Division Minor (JAPN) - 11 units required
* JAPN 201/C/CL (4) - Intermediate Japanese I
* JAPN 202/C/CL (4) - Intermediate Japanese II
* FLIT 250 (3) - Traditions of Japan
Upper Division Minor (JAPN) - 12 units^
* JAPN 300 - Advanced Japanese Conversation (3)
* JAPN 304 - Advanced Grammar and Composition (3)
* JAPN 306 - Advanced Reading and Composition (3)
* JAPN 402 - Japanese Literature (3)
^ This is why Japanese can't count as a Journalism minor; it only has 12 upper division courses, while Journalism majors are required to have at least 15 upper division units in their minor or collateral field.
The Journalism National Professional Accreditation Standards Requirement says that at least 80 of my 120 units required for graduation must be taken in departments other than Journalism (which falls under the College of Arts, Media, and Communication, so certain classes in that College overlap as "journalism-type departments" or "journalism-style courses"). Of those 80, at least 65 must be taken in the liberal arts, sciences and humanities fields.
Many courses, including pre-reqs for advanced journalism classes, are seen as overlapping, so we can't take them to count for the minor/collateral field (not a problem for me, with 2 minors) nor can they apply toward the 80 units outside of journalism... The only ones that seem to affect me are ART 250, which I have to take as a pre-req for my photojournalism course. But on the bright side, taking lower-division art courses means I can take Photoshop classes! =D
NO MORE THAN 15 LOWER DIVISION UNITS OF JOURNALISM MAY BE TRANSFERRED AND APPLIED TO THE DEGREE. (I don't understand what that means. Anyone care to explain?)
All of the below courses apply to my GPA and degree, but not to one specific area (if it was already filled, or if one applies for the major/minor). They might apply later on, as I meet more requirements for my major & minor:
* AP US History Exam
* JAPN 101/C
* MSE 105
...Geez, and that's it. Think I should make some giant laminate checklist? And what do you think of the major/minor requirements, or my university's course offerings? Discuss.
