This is the episode where we finally meet Mako-chan! Usagi and her friends go to a basketball court to drool over a hottie named Takeru, but when Naru and the others split up to go get closer, Usagi's left behind, fumbling with a camera. A gang of guys decides to bully up on Usagi with a basketball, and Usagi's about to get seriously pounded-- until Makoto steps in.

Her uniform's the same as the anime, except her skirt's just a bit shorter, and she doesn't have any laces (think shoe-ties) going up the front of her uniform. And as far as I could tell, she didn't have her trademark rose earrings on, either...

When Usagi finally spots Makoto at school, it's obvious Mako-chan is in a different class than them-- unless she transferred in to Juuban Junior High during the lunch period. So Makoto-chan goes to the roof (where coincidentally, Ami is also eating). Makoto stops and looks at Ami for a bit, then nods in acknowledgment-- to which Ami politely nods back.

In the anime, Usagi and Makoto meet under similar circumstances-- Usagi is late to school though, and runs into a gang of guys-- literally RUNS into them. They don't even get the chance to hit Usagi before Makoto shows up and threatens them. Her words provoke the guys into action, and she beats them all into a pulp. Makoto at least SAYS something to Usagi to verify she's all right-- she doesn't say a word to anyone in the live action.

At this point, Jadeite is still alive (in the live action), desperate not to be replaced by Nephrite-- in the anime, Jadeite's dead and gone, sealed away in ice by Queen Beryl, while Zoisite just sent a trio of youmas after Nephrite and had him killed in the episode prior. The reason for this discontinuity in the live action probably has a lot to do with how fast they keep introducing the senshi; in the original anime, there were a few episodes where Moon fought alone, then she joined up with Mercury; there were a few more where they were the two Sailor Senshi, then Mars joined them, and they didn't find any more senshi until Jupiter transfered to their (Ami and Usagi's) school.

After lunch is over and people are heading to their next class, everyone in the hall way makes way for Makoto-- and plenty of other people are staring. Why? Well besides her having lighter hair than most Japanese (which goes against most school rules, and explains why in the manga Makoto had to defend herself, saying her brown hair was NOT a perm), she's also in her old school uniform (which makes her stand out) and is much taller than your average Japanese girl. Everyone can easily recognize her, and because of how quickly rumors circulate, they all know that she got "kicked out" of her last school for getting into a fight with someone.

In the anime, Usagi has already gotten familiar with Makoto (at lunch, Makoto ate outside where Usagi usually eats) and they've become "friends," since Makoto shared her delicious cooking with Usagi (and her never-full stomach). Usagi found out a bit more about Makoto from Umino (she's in class 2-6, or Year 2, Class 6)-- who is non-existent (thus far?) in the live action.

Makoto and Usagi finally talk when Usagi catches Makoto staring at an oak tree (her symbol of protection; the oak wreath) outside of school. Usagi thanks Makoto for saving her hide, and explains that she bothered to approach Makoto because she doesn't believe the rumors. Makoto doesn't feel like explaining them anyway, to which Usagi responds that Makoto is so boyish! Instead of taking it as an insult (as most girls probably would), Makoto merely says that she gets that a lot-- which pretty much coincides with the anime, where Makoto takes a lot of guff in stride. However, like Ami, she suppresses the true part of herself-- the part that wants to be feminine, accepted by society, and do something that goes against what people expect of her.

Usagi immediately attaches herself to Makoto (same as in the anime... though in the anime, it was because Makoto gave her food!) and calls her "Mako-chan," something that obviously startles (but doesn't bother) Makoto. They decide to go shopping, and it's revealed that the two girls have rather differing tastes-- Makoto ends up buying sneakers, while Usagi prefers heels and pumps. Usagi finds out that Makoto lives alone, since her parents died when she was 10 (Makoto doesn't explain how it happened in the live action), and decides to take Makoto to the Hikawa Jinja as a "place to go if you're ever in trouble."

Meanwhile, Rei is telling Luna why she can't predict who or where Sailor V is-- but she does "feel something" from her. This is mysterious, since Rei's probably only seen V on TV or in magazines, if that (manga Rei doesn't like to watch TV; does anime Rei?). Sailor V has NEVER fought alongside the other Senshi as of yet. Rei obviously senses something from Makoto when the brunette does appear, but before she can really explain (or make an excuse) for anything, Makoto realizes what time it is and dashes off, leaving Usagi, Rei, and Luna alone.

Later on, Naru and a bunch of other girls are watching Takeru and his friends play basketball. Makoto is watching from behind, under the shade of a tree. Something strange happens when Takeru goes to slam dunk the basketball though- suddenly everything glows red (including the people), and no one knows what was going on. Takeru still makes the shot, so everyone cheers. Makoto, on the other hand, senses something is wrong. Meanwhile, Chun-chan (the guy who bullied Usagi before) and his friends appear. Chun-chan nods to his friends, and they move out.

It appears at this point that Chun-chan is going to be the villain of the episode-- changed into a youma, or taken over by one, perhaps. In the anime, Zoisite received orders from Beryl to start looking for the shards of the Ginzuishou, the Nijizuishou (Rainbow Crystals). The Rainbow Crystals ONLY existed in the anime, never in the manga... and I doubt they exist here in the live action, since the live action seems to draw so heavily from the manga. The enemy/youma-man of the anime episode was a guy who used psychic powers (telekinesis, to be exact) to cheat at arcade games. Zoisite turned him into a game-machine monster, which Makoto attempted to fight prior to becoming Sailor Jupiter. Since the arcade, the Rainbow Crystals, and the game guy don't exist in the live action universe, it's doubtful this storyline will happen.

Also interesting to note is that Makoto's first "wistful sigh" ("He looks like my old boyfriend...") hasn't occurred (yet?) in the live action. In the anime, she seemed to think every guy somehow resembled her old boyfriend. Live action Makoto doesn't appear to care about guys or what they think...

Naru and her friends (save Usagi, who's smitten with Tuxedo Mask by now) are all sighing at pictures of Takeru-- during class. Haruna snatches them away, but when she looks at them, she admires Takeru too-- and encourages everyone else to look! (This is the man-crazy Haruna we remember from the anime... ^^;) Usagi gets a look at one of the pictures, and sees Makoto in one of them-- so Usagi asks Makoto if she likes Takeru! Makoto completely laughs it off later on, when Usagi approaches her at lunch. She says that it wasn't Takeru she was staring fondly at-- but the basketball game! With her back to Usagi, she says that love doesn't suit her, and guys don't interest her at all.

When Makoto returns to her apartment complex, she's surprised by seeing a letter in her mailbox. It's not an official letter-- there's no stamp or return address-- but it DOES have her name on it. She opens it and reads it later on, and finds out it IS from Takeru, and he "always thinks about her." He arranges to meet her at ten the following morning in front of a fountain near a train station. Makoto knows that Takeru's not her boyfriend, but... she decides to head into the kitchen and prepare something (presumably for Takeru). Meanwhile, Luna spies on her from the window, and we see that Makoto is still not fully moved in yet-- so in transferring schools, she also had to move. There are still boxes littered about.

However, something's wrong-- Takeru's at the basketball court, and he suddenly drops the basketball. His eyes go dark, and we see hoards of girls heading toward him with blank, blissful smiles on their faces. It's obvious that whatever happened when he made his slam dunk earlier has made him a victim of the Dark Kingdom. Meanwhile, Makoto is waiting in the predetermined place, dressed all nicely... but he's still not showing up.

In the Karaoke place, Usagi says "it's a big problem" that she doesn't know whether Makoto is really crushing on Takeru or not. Rei thought she was talking about Makoto being the fourth soldier, in which case the matter would be simply resolved by whether or not Luna's crescent moon reacted. When Usagi explains the REAL situation, Rei says that liking boys is a waste of time-- another big difference between anime!Rei and the live action. While Rei of the anime is just as "lone wolf" as her live action counterpart, she does fall for guys --namely Mamoru!-- every now and then. (I just realized that ALL of the Inner Senshi except for Usagi are "lone wolf" types-- Ami because of her genius, Rei because of her psychic powers and past, Makoto because of her tomboyishness, and Minako because she's an idol-- all of these are ironic, because you think they'd only draw more people TO them! So Usagi is the binding factor that keeps them all together.)

It's obvious that Makoto has shown up to the meeting spot early... and she keeps waiting, and waiting... until even elementary school kids are rushing to school (presumably not HOME from school, because that would mean she was waiting until after 3 o'clock!). It starts raining, with the sound of thunder rumbling in the distance... (All these symbols --the oak, the wind in the oak tree, the thunder, rain, etc. all point to Makoto being Jupiter). Chun-chan and his gang finally show up-- and they reveal that the letter was a fake from them. Out of surprise, shock, and maybe even a bit of anger, Makoto drops her bag of homemade treats. Meanwhile Luna sees everything (aren't cats supposed to hate water?). Luna calls Usagi and the girls, and they rush to find Makoto right as the rain lets up.

Usagi finds out that Makoto had a crush on (?) an upperclassman at her old school, but she was rude to him and lost her chance before she realized what she felt. Makoto admits that Takeru resembled that upperclassman, which is why she bothered to go to the extent that she did. She sadly tosses out the treats she made, much to Usagi's dismay (though somehow I don't get the impression that live action!Usagi cares about the food being wasted... it's Mako-chan's efforts that pain her). Makoto walks away, heedless of Usagi's calls. Usagi only becomes more determined to help, even if there "isn't a youma involved." Surprisingly, Rei and Ami agree to help too-- Ami, of course, because she's so kind-hearted, but Rei decides to help because she hates guys that deceive girls.

The girls use their disguise phones (geez, that sounds weird when I say it aloud) and show up at the basketball court to challenge Chun-chan and his friends... obviously, since Usagi was the only one with a disguise power (save Minako) in the anime, this never happened.

Meanwhile, Makoto gets back to her apartment-- but there's no letter in her mailbox. However, she senses someone watching her-- and Takeru's there. He says she's "the only one who didn't show up," so he came to get her himself. He wants her to come with him-- but there's obviously something suspicious here, as Takeru has no knowledge of any letter or Makoto's "crush" on him. When Makoto "awakens," she's in a black room surrounded by other girls, all standing and staring as lifeless as... statues. Of course, statues that are also in the room... the same room Jadeite was in earlier, cursing Nephrite and saying he would succeed in his next mission and he would NOT be replaced.

While this attitude is similar to Jadeite's in the anime, it never seemed much like Jadeite to really come up with "great" ideas on his own. He tried a variety of things that flopped, and liked to try them again, instead of changing locations, getting more powerful help, etc. On the other hand, Nephrite has gone and done his dirty work hands on- at least in two of the episodes where he's appeared so far.

Makoto tells Takeru that she had a crush on him too-- but her crush didn't matter. What matters is that he deceived all the other girls. It turns out that whatever spell was meant to freeze Makoto didn't work-- so when Takeru tries to take her energy, Makoto socks him in the face, releasing the other girls from the spell. They all reappear out in the park near the basketball court where they were taken.

The hilarious part is that Usagi, Rei, and Ami are all kicking Chun-chan and his friends' butts-- and that when Chun-chan issues the order to "do anything" to stop them, they restrain Ami and Rei-- only to get socked by the girls in question. Usagi then makes a bold slam dunk (think one of those cheesy "running-in-mid-air" shots) and steps on Chun-chan's face as she slams the basket. Obviously, this is a far cry from klutzy, crybaby Usagi who absolutely detests P.E. Did she inhale part of Minako's anime personality in the change from anime to live action? Chun-chan and his friends are so exhausted by this point that Usagi and Co. easily claim victory.

As it turns out, the youma (a knight with snakes coming out of his head and arms) was controlling Takeru. He and Makoto are alone in the fountain area in front of the station-- but now Makoto is cornered, never having dealt with a youma before. Takeru awakens, and when Makoto reaches for him (perhaps in a silent plea for help), Takeru thinks that she's trying to hurt him, and runs away. (What a chicken!) Makoto has a flashback to her parents "leaving" when she was a child-- and as the years pass, everyone else that ever mattered to her-- friends, other crushes (including her upperclassman), professors... everybody. However, a voice calls out to her: "Mako-chan!" saying "You're not alone!" The voice belongs to Sailor Moon! The Jupiter transformation bracelet appears on her wrist, and Makoto transforms into Sailor Jupiter!

While Jupiter is the only one with an attack drawn right from the anime ("Supreme Thunder!") there is no antenna coming from her tiara-- instead, she sticks her leg up in the air and channels the lightning/thunder through her hands! She also doesn't yell the attack as she normally does in the anime-- she sort of just "says" it, but with an echo. Surprisingly, the youma is destroyed with that one attack-- no help from Sailor Moon needed... again, which goes against the anime, where Usagi's big angst of the episode was dealing with the fact that the youma weren't youma, but PEOPLE! This was the episode when Usagi finally got the crescent moon wand from Luna, but since she's already got it in the live action (and since the youma "choose" to leave their human vessels), there's no need for that whole segment of worry and concern.

The real senshi show up-- and Jupiter easily recognizes them all. Usagi says that they're all companions; Rei explains she couldn't tell Makoto was a senshi because she was already half under the youma's spell; Ami says that Makoto is one of them-- a senshi! Makoto, like Ami and Rei, has a "realization" -- that she's not rude and tomboyish because she "is," but because she had to be those things (or be considered those things, and therefore think of herself as no good) in order to finally meet up with her companions.

It's a bit cheesy, but true-- all of the senshi save Usagi had to undergo a great deal of hardship before they had the strength to become Senshi. Usagi's toughest battles happened AFTER she became a Senshi, and they all became closer as a result. Moon's thrilled that they're all together... but when Mars mentions that they have to find out who Sailor V really is, someone else is listening in... someone all in white, with a long, flowing cape (Kunzite, methinks!).

/Episode End!

Sorry that these are coming along so slow... but time is hard to find now that I'm working so many hours this week! On top of that, I shouldn't have stayed up as late as I have... I have to be at work at 6:30am tomorrow! Eeya!

BTW-- can someone point me to or make me a few Sailor Moon icons? PGSM, preferably... but anime and manga work, too! I just need some SM spirit in my icon set, and I don't have too much time to make them myself! ;_; I'll make you an icon in return!
