Summer Fruit!
Jul. 4th, 2005 05:32 pmAh, I would love today so much more if I could only sit outside in the blazing sun (it's actually kind of breezy outside) and have myself a thick, juicy steak covered in A-1 sauce. ;_; I want a BBQ! And I want a pack of highly explosive fireworks to blow up in my own front yard! *sniffle* I miss the good ol' days. Suffice it to say, I have absolutely NO plans for today. AX fell through, as I said... I didn't plan it enough. This just hasn't been my month for that kind of thing, anyway. I'd like to do something nice with Scott, but... eh, who knows?
Anyway, I'm munching away at two of my favorite summer fruits-- a nectarine and a peach. I discovered that a nectarine is apparently a hybrid fruit, like a cross between a plum and a peach. Why not call it a pleach then? Or a peum? Or something like that... nectarine is so... not like either of those! I thought it was natural (that is, it was on Earth before humans bothered to interfere with genome crossing and the like). Did you know a nectarine is the only fruit that you will never find in perfume form? Why? Because the oil can't be suspended long enough to do the perfume-thing. We can make anything we want smell like roast beef by injecting it with a chemical, but we can't replicate the exact scent of a nectarine! HAH!
So there's more contemplation and activity going on... I finally got around to painting the first layer on my landscape... let's just say
rhapsody_dragon was right-- acrylics are a pain to work with. You can never predict exactly what color you'll get when you blend, and it never occurred to me that the color of the trees outside our house were so hard to replicate! Still, I think I did an okay job... the house itself still needs painting, and any plant life needs refining... but I'm excusing myself by thinking that this is for fun and relaxation, not because I wanted to paint some masterpiece.
The other thing I was thinking about was... the domain thing. I've been neglecting the site, if only because several things irritate me:
(1) I'm a moocher. I may have paid Marianya-nee-chan for leeching her domain, but only once or twice, and not nearly as much as I should.
(2) If I ever have any problems, like I did with installing InkTank, I have to run them by her first-- the people at e-Starr and cPanel never get back to me personally.
(3) I don't really like having such a divided site. If I got my own domain, I could have several SUBDOMAINS for my sites. That is:
mysite.com -->
amc.mysite.com (for Animanga Collision)
ms.mysite.com (for Mare Serenitatis)
or something to that effect. I could likewise do what I am now with the folder names-- and instead of "ms" standing for the site name, I could do "sailormoon" or "bssm" or something like that, to stand for the SERIES that the subdomain revolves around. The only catch would be AMC, because it is a collective in an of itself, and revolves around a good... er, 20 series, maybe? Most of them don't even have sites up. ;_;
So I've been looking at 1and1.com, which has been widely advertised in WIRED magazine lately. They look like they have loads of interesting plans, but I'm not sure if they're just registration or registration AND hosting. Plus I always like to know exactly what the control panel looks like, so I haven't paid a couple hundred bucks for something I don't understand.
Then I decided to check out DreamHost.com, which is having a sale-- it was mentioned on the InkTank site, and if I could get InkTank running on a domain, that would be FANTASTIC. I would devote as much time as humanly possible to resurrecting Dragonfayth and creating my own story archives.
Potential Subdomains (This list includes any and all subdomains I've ever tinkered with)
Dragonfayth
Blue Eyes and Apricots (could be connected to Darkness Rising)
Mare Serenitatis (could include Viva Forever and Project: Sailor V)
Animanga Collision (would host all my smaller anime/manga-based sites)
Blacklight Arcade (would host all my game-based sites-- Star Ocean, FFX, etc.)
Delishidoodle/Souten Studios (Graphics site, for layouts, icons, etc)
Hot Gimmick Archive (before FFnet had a Hot Gimmick section, I wanted to make my own exclusive HG fic archive. I can still do that... I just need a name for it)
Archive Obscura (sort of like a mini-FFnet for smaller fandoms, weird genres, etc.)
Surveyholics (an archive for email surveys and the like)
Enigma (quiz results and links)
BloodMoon (host of RedLady's fantastic and unfinished sequel-to-Sailor Stars saga, Sailor Moon: Eternal)
Every Heart (kind of like my "personal" site, with songs I've written, art I've done... while nice-looking, it's neglected. If I could figure out how to work DeviantArt, it would probably replace EH)
Media Academy (an archive of things I did in the past for non-personal reasons; Beacon's Media Academy was one, Digital Horizon was the other)
So I mean, unless I made a subdomain for every site in Animanga Collision, 10 subdomains would be enough for me, since I could cut out Media Academy/Digital Horizon, Every Heart, Enigma, and Surveyholics. And I could combine others, too... X_X But it sounds like a math equation gone wrong, and I would LOOOOOVE some advice from certain persons with expertise in this area *cough*
mklutz*cough* so I can figure out what to do next. And anyone else with advice, please-- send it my way! Even if it's just about combining sites, managing things, or coming up with a name...
But then the problem boils down to... what name would I pick, even if I did decide on one host/registrar or another? I mean, most of the ones I would have taken ARE taken by someone else. Grace made up that list of random words I thought were cool a while back, but just mish-mashing names together doesn't seem like a good idea to me. *shrug* I don't know what to do!
Oh, I'm so going to need a fanart commission for some upcoming chapters of WDKY. I'd like to have it done BEFORE the chapters come out, which can mean one of two things:
(1) Got skillz? If you can both write and draw, I'll let you beta the chapter way in advance. You'll get a super-sneak peak and have a whole lot of context to work with in terms of setting, expression, etc.
(2) Sneaky-peaky ... I can give you a rough description of what I'd like drawn (because my own preliminary sketches weren't so great) but I won't give out any details. We're about 11 chapters away from the part where this occurs.
I'm also replaying FFIX... despite the fact that the character graphics still bug me (they all look 9 years old, not 16ish... and while I love Vivi to death, Zidane is SUCH a player!) I like it. Though the "humorous text" I was supposed to get after not letting Garnet change her name... was not all that funny. I was wondering if I messed up or something-- but I spelled her name properly, and I used lowercase letters for everything after G... Do they say something strange if you just leave her name at 'Dagger' ...?

Date: 2005-07-06 11:31 pm (UTC)I've Googled Surpass and found out some reviews... so I just wanted to ask you some questions.
(1) Do you use cPanel? That's what I've been using, and it's pretty easy.
(2) How reliable/quick is the tech support?
(3) How are downtimes? Do they notify you in advance?
(4) Do you know if they support external direct access to the mySQL database, and deep URLs with PHP (e.x. read.php/index=1337). If you don't know, do they make it easy to find out?
Re: :O
Date: 2005-07-06 11:36 pm (UTC)2) Haven't had any reason to use the Tech Support yet. (Move to Surpass around Christmas.)
3) Haven't had any downtime yet, either. Anna might know, though.
4) Not sure. Anna again might be better to ask since she's been on them for years before I have. ;_; Sorry, I wound up being kind of useless...
Re: :O
Date: 2005-07-06 11:47 pm (UTC)Oh, but since you came from Dreamhost, how did you move everything? Is there like, an easy way to do that? ^^;
Re: :O
Date: 2005-07-06 11:57 pm (UTC)>_> How did I move... well, I actually screwed it up. But what you do is you download everything.
...
And then you edit all the code and reupload. Painful, I know, but it's the only way. I was stupid and didn't check that everything had downloaded and so lost most of my site. -_-;
