Pass it along-- I'm officially working on the Definitive Yu-Gi-Oh 'Shippers list. This isn't a rehash of LFangor's list, it's an explanation as to why certain names were picked. If you want to theorize (or confirm) the reasoning behind a certain pairing's name, then let us know!
The way it'll work is that we'll use Japanese names-- but for characters whose names are confirmed for other languages or special pronunciations, we'll spell them that way. Confused?
Here's an example: Anzu, (Katsuya) Jounouchi, (Hiroto) Honda, (Ryuuji) Otogi, (Ryouta) Kajiki, Seto (Kaiba), Mokuba, Yuugi, Pharaoh Atemu, Varon, Malik, Isis, Amelda, Raphael, Tenma, Pegasus, Shaadi, Shaada, Mahaado, etc... Please note that some of these spellings need confirmation. If you want to provide it, please do!
Certain characters have "other forms." For example:

Apocalypshipping (Yami no Malik x Seto x Isis) - The end of the world is coming-- says Yami no Malik and Isis, anyway. Seto doesn't like the world very much anyway...
Apparishipping (Roba x Kotsuzaka) - They're both rather ghostly at times... "appari" undoubtedly comes from "apparition."
Apprenticeshipping (Mahaado x Mana) - Mana is Mahaado's apprentice in black magic.

Aquaintanceshipping (Honda x Roba) - Honda and Roba really don't know each other too well, so they're acquaintances.
Archaishipping (Pharaoh Atemu x Priest Seto x Thief King Bakura) - They're all ancient characters, and another word for ancient might be "archaic."
Ardentshipping (Honda x Shizuka) - When someone is "ardently in love," they're very expressive. This is certainly true of Honda's affection for Shizuka.

Aromashipping (Kajiki x Honda x Jounouchi) - ?
Arrogantshipping (Seto x Mai) - The most arrogant male character paired with the most arrogant female character. Need I explain more?

Attachshipping (Kisara x Mokuba) - They're both very attached to the same person-- though in different times. That person is Seto, of course!
Atticshipping (Ryou x Mana) - ?
Avishipping (Yami no Yuugi x Isis) - ?
Azureshipping (Seto x Anzu) - Both of them have blue eyes, and "azure" is a very pretty name for blue.
Babbleshipping (Jounouchi x Kisara) - They both babble...?
Bakushipping (Thief King Bakura x Yami no Bakura x Ryou) - "Baku" being short for Bakura. All of them are Bakura! o_O
Balanceshipping (Shaadi x Isis x Ryou) - All three of these people are charged (or have charged themselves) with keeping the balance. Shaadi keeps the balance of the distribution of the Millennium Items, Isis keeps the balance of the past and future, and Ryou keeps the balance of himself with his darker half.
Balladshipping (Kajiki x Ryou x Shizuka) - ?
Bananashipping (Honda x Malik) - Honda got turned into a monkey in the Noa/Virtual World arc, while Malik seemed to have an odd affinity for the fruit. Who knows why?
Bandageshipping (Yami no Bakura x Ryou x Shizuka) - ?
Barbecueshipping (Honda x Kajiki) - Kajiki was BBQing fish when everyone met them. As for Honda... I have no idea.
Barrenshipping (Pegasus x Catherine) - ?
Barriershipping (Seto x Yami no Yuugi x Noa) - All of them have barriers preventing them from truly loving-- Seto's is self-imposed, Yami no Yuugi's is his lack of his own body, or memories, and Noa's is the fact that he's stuck in the virtual world.

Batteryshipping (Jounouchi x Yami no Bakura x Ryou) - ?

Bittershipping (Pegasus x Honda) - Pegasus is pretty bitter about losing Cyndia, but why is Honda in there? What's he bitter about?
Bladeshipping (Pandora x Yuugi) - When Pandora dueled Yuugi, there were blades about to cut the loser's legs off...
Blameshipping (Possessed Jounouchi x Anzu) - Would Anzu really be able to blame Jounouchi if he did anything to her while he was possessed? Who knows?
Blankshipping (Jounouchi x Shogo) - Shogo drew up a blank when he saw Jounouchi. "What, you're a duelist?"
Blessedshipping (Priest Mahaado x Shizuka) - Just a wild guess, but Mahaado considered himself blessed to be in the service of Atemu, while Shizuka finds herself blessed to have a big brother like Jounouchi, and friends like Yuugi, Honda, Otogi, Mai, and Anzu.
Blindshipping (Pharaoh Atemu x Yuugi) - You'd have to be blind not to see the oddity behind this one...?
Bloodshipping (Yami no Malik x Gozaburo) - Both of 'em are obsessed with blood (or vengeance, as it were).
Blueshipping (Seto x Kisara) - A close cousin to Azureshipping, this one deals with Seto's blue eyes, and Kisara's blue hair, eyes, and oh yeah-- her ka spirit, the [Blue Eyes] White Dragon
Bondangeshipping (Yami no Malik x Otogi) - Not sure about Otogi, but Yami no Malik sure has a thing for bondage. Remember his duel with Mai?
Boothshipping (Keith x Seto x Jounouchi x Shizuka) - ?
Bounceshipping (Ryou x Rebecca) - ?
Boundshipping (Thief King Bakura x Yuugi) - ?
Boxshipping (Mokuba x Anzu) - When Anzu saved Mokuba from the Rare Hunters, they got stuck in a warehouse full of boxes. Anzu used them to prop Mokuba up so he could escape, but she fell and got turned into an enemy.
Breathshipping (Shaadi x Cyndia) - Are these two even breathing anymore? We know Cyndia probably isn't, but...
Bribeshipping (Mai x Ryuzaki) - Mai bribed Ryuzaki to duel Jounouchi at Duelist Kingdom. Ryuzaki accepted the bait.
Bronzeshipping (Yami no Malik x Malik) - ?
Bruiseshipping (Honda x Jounouchi x Ryuzaki) - ?

Buddyshipping (Honda x Jounouchi) - This one should be obvious... these two are best buddies. [Meaning, NOTHING more, right? Why call it BUDDYshipping?]
Burntshipping (Keith x Yami no Yuugi x Yuugi) - Keith -in the anime- set a fire in a warehouse after Yuugi's puzzle was broken. Yuugi nearly got burnt to a crisp assembling the puzzle again, before Jounouchi saved him.
Butterflyshipping (Ryou x Mai x Anzu) - ?
Cageshipping (Yami no Bakura x Yami no Yuugi x Malik) - ?
Cakeshipping (Cyndia x Mokuba) - Not that we know much about Cyndia, but Mokuba sure loves cake, right? He is a kid!
Candleshipping (Yami no Bakura x Seto x Ryou) - ?
Cardshipping (Sugoroku x Yuugi) - Sugoroku is the Kame Game Store's card expert, and Yuugi, his grandson is his protogé. There are few cards Yuugi doesn't know about, or have.
Careshipping (Honda x Shizuka x Yuugi) - Honda cares a great deal about his friends, especially Jounouchi and Shizuka, Shizuka cares deeply for Jounouchi, Mai, and Anzu, and Yuugi cares for everyone probably a bit more than is healthy.
Carmenshipping (Yami no Malik x Yami no Bakura x Seto) - ?
Casteshipping (Pharaoh Atemu x Thief King Bakura) - A caste is sort of like a class or ranking. Pharaoh Atemu's at the top, while Bakura is pretty much at the bottom. King or no, he's still a thief, forced to steal to survive. His "royal status" is merely self-proclaimed.
Castleshipping (Priest Seto x Jounouchi x Seto) - ?
Cavaliershipping (Yami no Yuugi x Rebecca) - ?
Ceoshipping (Pegasus x Seto x Otogi) - This one's easy. They're all CEOs!
Chanceshipping (Seto x Otogi x Yuugi) - Despite Kaiba not believing in the Heart of the Cards, chance has saved him on more than one occasion. Otogi favors dice, which are always a chancey way to bet on things, and Yuugi, well... Heart of the Cards, anyone?
Changeshipping (Otogi x Malik) - Both Otogi and Malik are out to change things that happened in the past-- Otogi to change the people's view of Yuugi after he defeated Pegasus, and Malik to change people's view of the Pharaoh and his "need" to be brought into power/protected once more.
Chaosshipping (Priest Seto x Thief King Bakura x Yami no Bakura x Seto) - As if a vessel and his dark half aren't enough, mix two antagonists in the mix and you have CHAOS!
Charmshipping (Shizuka x Mana) - Both of these ladies are quite CHARMING, and manage to CHARM others quite well-- though quite accidentally, it seems.
Chaseshipping (Honda x Otogi) - Honda and Otogi both spend almost all their chasing Shizuka-- not like they'd ever have time for one another, unless they crashed into each other mid-chase.
Cheatshipping (Jounouchi x Roba) - During Jounouchi's duel with Roba, Roba cheated by having his little brothers spy on Jounouchi's hand.
Cheershipping (Otogi x Shizuka) - Otogi and Shizuka are both cheerleaders in their own right, but only Otogi actually has his own cheerleading team.
Cherryshipping (Jounouchi x Amane) - ? (What??? Amane's dead! Jounouchi doesn't even know who she is!)
Chibishipping (Yuugi x Mokuba) - Yuugi and Mokuba are both a bit short. One of the more derogatory Japanese words to describe such "vertically challenged" people is 'chibi.'
Chimeshipping (Thief King Bakura x Malik x Mai) - ?
Chuteshipping (Pharaoh Atemu x Kisara) - ? (Like chutes and ladders?)
Circleshipping (Honda x Jounouchi x Miho) - Honda professed a great romantic interest in Miho in the first series, and Jounouchi watches

Coerceshipping (Strings x Kotsuzaka) - Strings was a mime used as a puppet by Marik. But what about Kotsuzaka?
Coinshipping (Anzu x Miho) - ?
Commitshipping (Priest Seto x Priestess Isis x Seto x Isis) - They're all very committed to their beliefs, faiths, and goals.
Conceitshipping (Yami no Bakura x Mai) - Yami no Bakura and Mai are pretty conceited, if you think about it.
Conditionshipping (Gozaburo x Mokuba) - ?
Conquestshipping (Varon x Mai) - Who knows why this one is Conquestshipping, but here's a guess: conquest is a fancy word for a determined search for something, or the desperate need to reach a particular goal. Mai wants to be a better duelist, not one-upped by guys like Yuugi and Jounouchi, while Varon, well...
Conscriptshipping (Gozaburo x Seto x Mokuba) - ?
Conspireshipping (Yami no Malik x Yami no Bakura x Malik x Ryou) - All of these guys (except Ryou, really) conspired together to bring about some not-so-pleasant endings for Yuugi and Co.
Controlshipping (Malik x Noa) - This one's easy-- Malik and Noa are both notorious for controlling others-- Malik for Jounouchi and Anzu, particularly, and Noa for controlling Mokuba.

Corruptshipping (Thief King Bakura x Priest Seto) - Both of these hapless guys got corrupted by the dark evil that is Zork Necrophidius.

Danceshipping (Mai x Anzu) - Anzu's the notoriously dedicated dancer, but Mai's got moves of her own-- no doubt about that.
Dangershipping (Yami no Malik x Seto) - Both of these guys are pretty dangerous-- depending on who you are.
Darkshipping (Yami no Bakura x Yami no Yuugi) - Easy: both of these guys are the first "dark" halves we encounter in the series.

Dealshipping (Yami no Bakura x Ryou x Amane) - ? (My theory: Yami no Bakura makes Ryou a deal to bring back Amane from the dead...)
Deathshipping (Yami no Malik x Ryou) - Both of these guys are just a bit obsessed with death, don't you think? More accurately, the death of someone close to them. Sort of.

Devotionshipping (Jounouchi x Anzu) - Both of these are Yuugi's truest and most devoted friends. They're more dedicated to his cause than anyone else.

Digshipping (Arthur x Ryou) - Arthur (aka Professor Hopkins) is an archaelogist, while Ryou's father was, as well. They're both used to digging in the dirt for clues.
Distrustshipping (Seto x Shaadi) - Seto wouldn't trust Shaadi as far as he could throw him. And that's assuming Shaadi has a corporeal form to THROW.
Divulgeshipping (Yami no Malik x Thief King Bakura x Pharaoh Atemu) - ?
Domashipping (Raphael x Amelda x Varon) - Still not sure on if Doma is really the right name for this group, but assuming it is, these guys are all in it. The only one missing is their leader, Dartz.
Doodleshipping (Rebecca x Amane) - ?
Doomshipping (Yami no Malik x Yami no Bakura x Mokuba) - ? (What does Mokuba have to do with it?)
Doubtshipping (Seto x Malik x Ryou) - ?
Downshipping (Keith x Cyndia) - ?
Dragonshipping (Jounouchi x Yami no Yuugi) - Of all people to have Dragonshipping, why these two? I'd think it'd be more appropriate for Seto x Jounouchi or Jounouchi x Ryuzaki, but... anyhow, Jounouchi is famous because of his Red Eyes Black Dragon, while Yami no Yuugi's got his 3 God Dragons. Both of them are also holders of Legendary Dragons (Helmos and Timaeus, respectively)
Dramashipping (Jounouchi x Kajiki) - This might have something to do with how overdramatic both guys can be...
Dreamshipping (Jounouchi x Yuugi x Mai) - In Yuugi and Jounouchi's DREAMS would they get to have any kind of a three-way with Mai.
Dripshipping (Kajiki x Anzu) - "A drip is a drop, a drop is full of water, water is nature, nature is beautiful, thanks for the compliment."
Driveshipping (Malik x Mai) - ?
Droidshipping (Yami no Yuugi x Strings) - When Strings fought Yami no Yuugi, he was pretty much a droid. He wasn't thinking for himself, really.
Dulcetshipping (Mai x Isis x Shizuka) - ?
Dungeonshipping (Pegasus x Otogi) - ? (I know Pegasus has a fondness for dungeons, but Otogi?)
Dustshipping (Yami no Malik x Catherine) - ?
Dynamicshipping (Kajiki x Rebecca) - ?
Ecoshipping (Kajiki x Haga) - This one's easy-- Kajiki is all about the oceans, while Haga's all about bugs. They're both very interested in some part of the ecosystem, don't you think?
Egoshipping (Keith x Seto x Mai) - As if we needed the egotistical, arrogant, conceited people to get involved in more orgies...
Eliteshipping (Keith x Seto) - ?
Enigmashipping (Priest Shaada x Shaadi) - An enigma is a mystery wrapped in a decade-old sandwich. So are Shaada and Shaadi. Enigmas, I mean, not sandwiches.
Envyshipping (Anzu x Rebecca) - Anzu and Rebecca both envy each other for the attention one or the other gets from Yuugi or Yami no Yuugi.
Ettushipping (Seto x Jounouchi x Mai) - ? (Does this have anything to do with the quote from Cesar-- "Et tu, Brutus?"
Euroshipping (Seto x Ryou) - Well, we all know Seto's a globe-trotter, and in the dub, Ryou's a transfer student from London. But he's pure Japanese in the original version, so this doesn't make much sense.
Evilshipping (Yami no Malik x Yami no Bakura x Rebecca) - ? (I can understand YnM and YnB, but how is Rebecca evil?)
Executeshipping (Yami no Malik x Shaadi) - Both of these guys execute people who don't do as they please. YnM used this tactic in every one of his duels, and Shaadi did it to those who displeased him (in the first series/arc of the manga).
Exodushipping (Jounouchi x Yuugi x Haga) - Not sure why it's Exodus and not Exodia, but if it's got anything to do with the card set, Haga threw out Yuugi's Exodia cards, and Jounouchi dived into the ocean to get them back. Plus they all made the "exodus" to Duelist Kingdom, only to get beat at one time or another.
Exoticshipping (Yami no Bakura x Isis) - If you consider Egypt exotic, then sure-- these two are exotic.
Eyeshipping (Yami no Bakura x Pegasus) - Yami no Bakura stole Pegasus' Millennium Eye. 'Nuff said. (Personally, I think this would work better with Akunadin x Pegasus 'shipping, but how the hell would that come about? No, I don't want to know.
Fadeshipping (Yami no Malik x Jounouchi) - Yami no Malik faded from existence after his defeat, and Jounouchi faded last from Mai's mind while she was trapped in the Dark Game.
Fakeshipping (Yami no Malik x Jounouchi x Malik) - ?
Fallenshipping (Pandora x Malik) - Both of these guys have fallen from grace, for bad, but purely understandable (losing his wife, losing his father) reasons.
Falseshipping (Strings x Catherine) - ?
Faltershipping (Kotsuzaka x Rebecca) - ?
Fateshipping (Raphael x Yami no Yuugi) - Raphael is the one who believes strongest in fate-- as does Yami no Yuugi, but they're on polar opposite sides as to whose Fate is better.
Faultshipping (Seto x Anzu x Mokuba) - I should know this one-- Mamono and I came up with it, and now it's official! YAY! I believe our theory was that Seto would be at fault for something, causing Anzu to gravitate toward him, but Mokuba to drift away. Where would Mokuba drift to? Anzu, of course? Plus can't you just see him crushing on her? (Shameless plug: I have a fic of this coming out soon. Actually it starts out as Boxshipping, turned into Faultshipping, and then... who knows?)
Fawnshipping (Pegasus x Haga) - ?
Fearshipping (Yami no Malik x Isis) - Yami no Malik has something to fear from his "vessel's" sister-- she's the one that knows how to get rid of him
Feathershipping (Yami no Yuugi x Jounouchi x Yuugi) - ?
Feignshipping (Yami no Malik x Pegasus x Otogi) - Just a theory, but all of these guys have feigned innocence at one time or another, when they were really involved in less-than-nice deeds.
Femmeshipping (Mai x Isis x Anzu) - Grrl power is at its peak with these three power girls. Watch out-- it's the femme fatale!
Fetishipping (Yami no Malik x Malik x Yami no Bakura) - All of these baddies have some bad fetishes-- Yami no Malik with revenge and taking over the world, Malik with the same, and Yami no Bakura with-- hey! Vengeance and thievery.
Figureshipping (Isis x Mai x Anzu x Shizuka) - Just because we had to get a bit of a legal conflict in here, let's toss Shizuka into the Femmeshipping mix and get some HOT FIGURES groovin' it on together!
Fillershipping (Noa x Rebecca) - Both of these characters appeared solely in the anime series, during "filler" arcs that were never in the manga.
Flareshipping (Seto x Yami no Yuugi x Yuugi) - ?

The way it'll work is that we'll use Japanese names-- but for characters whose names are confirmed for other languages or special pronunciations, we'll spell them that way. Confused?

Yamishipping (Yami no Malik x Yami no Bakura x Yami no Yuugi) - This one's easy-- they're all "yami," or dark halves.
Yujoshipping (Possessed Jounouchi x Yuugi) - Technically it should be "yuujou," but close enough. It's the combination of Yuugi and Jounouchi's name, meaning "friendship." When Jounouchi was possessed, Yuugi's friendship got through to him, and broke Malik's control.
