If you know the words, sing along!
Mar. 3rd, 2005 08:50 am*hops around in a Jetson-era spacecraft*
The closest to the sun is the planet Mercury/then the shrouded planet Venus is as cloudy as can be/the Earth is next, we call it home/Let's hope it stays that way/And then there's Mars/It's really red, what more can I say?/The gassy planet Jupiter's as big as planets come/then there's Saturn with its mighty rings, made up of tiny crumbs/We travel onto Neptune, it's a gassy, freezy ball/And finally there's Pluto, the furthest one of all!
...You forgot Uranus! *laughter* (From Yakko's tour of the solar system, Animaniacs)
So I just finished my Astronomy test-- my FIRST astronomy test, and let me state for the record that:
1) Prof. Wallingford is my coolest professor. He's so... bouncy!
2) I thought I knew things about stars, based on my weird and random interests, my astrology hobbies, etc. This class blew ALL THAT right out of the water, and then some. It integrates math, chemistry, and sooo much more!
3) I think I did "okay" on the test, but there were some tricky questions like "which telescope has this kind of focus?" and I was all o_O Uhm...
See, I'm kind of a last-minute studier. For some reason, information absorbs more readily in my brain that way. I've tried studying for a week prior to a big exam, a few days, for several hours at a time, but I'll wake up the day of the test not remembering Napoleon from Louis X! So I like to do last-minute reviews, and I end up retaining information and making note of what he said in class and how to remember it easier.
I hope I get at least a B on the test... ^^;
Since I got out so early, here I am in the Collaboratory (I SPELLED IT RIGHT!), reveling in the mystery of IE6 (my calendar looks SOMEWHAT better, but not as good as it does in FireFox, and I don't know why. Still no word from
pamelajoy, so I think I'll turn to
opal_help. ) and the yummy smell of libraries. Do you know libraries have a distinct smell? I'm not talking about those dinky labs everyone's got in their college, like the "Library of Communication" or whatever, because those books are different, so you don't get the same smell. When you have a library that's got all sorts of books about all sorts of things, then you really get that "library smell." I realized as I walked in, how much I missed that smell, because I sort of revel in it. It's really nice.
It makes me miss the Petaluma Library, actually, because I remember as a kid I could park myself for hours there. Heck, before that, there was the San Rafael Library over near Boyd Park-- wow, that was fun! I could go have a picnic with dad and then go to the library reading books about rabbits and mermaids and wizards for hours! ^_^ What a blast. I really miss that. Of course, I also liked the San Francisco's Main Library, even though there was nothing classic or "homey" about that place at all. It's like a cross between a mall and a hospital, with the way it looks and smells.
I miss volunteering at the library, too. I miss reading to little kids and doing voices and having them giggle and grin and pester me with (nice) questions. It's this kind of feeling that makes me want to teach. Journalism isn't exactly a subject for elementary school kids, but ENGLISH is, and I have to start somewhere, right? I might as well start making plans and scoping out territory when I get to Japan-- if I don't bounce off the wall and glomp the first Seto Kaiba cosplayer I see.
Note: my Sundial horoscope says "Distant places beckon, but don't go racing off yet. There's something you've already promised to do that has to be finished first." Hrm, what could that be? (Don't debunk my horoscope-- the Sundial ones are ALWAYS accurate!) Maybe it's a fic. I do want to get all the holiday chapters (16, 17, 18, 19, probably) out before I leave, but 16 is being particularly hard. See, I managed to get the bulk of the chapter-- the steamy!angst scenes out, because I was inspired. But now I have all this extra backstory I need to fill in, with my weird references and hints about "Circle of Seven" and everything... I've got a partial idea for a scene at the beginning, but I don't know how I can finish off. My ideas are just that-- ideas, not prose. HELP!
Hrm, what else? Last night I was browsing through all my old layout folders and stumbled on a nummy idea that I used to make a pretty layout for SMRFF-- which I'm going to be working on again, ladies and gents! ^_^ I'm back, I'm bold, and you bet I'm beautiful, babe! The layout is jokingly called "Old school meets new school," to give you some idea... or not. Keep your eyes peeled-- I still need to code it, plus come up with new pages and the like. If you have any comments/questions, lemme know. I wanna revitalize the fandom, yo!
Speaking of that, I need to start making/finding Sailormoon icons. I don't think I've ever had one! What's up with that?
Okay, Sociology starts in a little less than a half hour, so I best check the Friends page real quick and then skedaddle out of here. Catch ya on the flip side! ^_^
