I came back from Cris's house in the Presidio around 10:30am this morning-- a quick and easy bus-ride home on the 28 with Jimbo. Last night was fun-- we played the Cheapass Game that Jimbo and I bought from the Japantown collectibles store, "Kill Doctor Lucky," and man was it long! Over 2 and a half hours, and Jimbo finally did the good doctor in with the monkey hand in the Foyer.
Bruce and James were also there, and shortly after 1am, when everyone started heading to sleep (in Bruce's case, he went home) James actually TMd me (even though he was in the other room!) and apologized for "what happened the last time I was there." He means that time I was flirting/messing around with him, but I had no idea how old he was (30!) and... well, yeah. But we got along great that night, plus we're both "taken" now, so I said it was okay, my fault too, and all was well. I didn't actually get to SLEEP until 6am (why am I not surprised), but I did come up with a bucketload more ideas for WDKY15-- teh yay!
When I finally got home and conked back out again (after a waffle, which I think gave me the stomachache I have now), I had two weird dreams: one about being kidnapped and stuck somewhere dark and dank, and the second about (of course) Jason, and the possibility-that's-going-nowhere of seeing him again. Something about me being inside a building, and one of my friends telling me people were waiting outside... I walked out with that person dragging me along (I have a feeling it's Katia, which leads me to believe it's residual from that time in the RO room when she dragged me in to see Jason and I practically clawed her eyes out) and we got to this garden-like area, and there everyone was. And I mean everyone: Alex Chun, Johnny Sung, Harry, and probably everyone else like Michelle, Nancy, Joyce... I know Sheila was there, as was Eva, and probably Sung, too. I remember bowing in one of my weird ways to Jason and Alex, and then I think I hugged both of them (!!) and we went off somewhere.
-_- I half-wish my dreams were still prophetic.
Anyway, what follows is a highly-opinionated article, penned by none other than ME, mistress of this journal, and ranter of all things mole-hilly.
For anyone that's ever read Miwa Ueda's Peach Girl, as published in English-speaking nations by Tokyopop, you'll immediately know what I'm talking about when I say "Viz has just pulled a Tokyopop." Yes, ladies and gentlemen, prepare to CRINGE. In order to speed up the publishing of Yu-Gi-Oh, Viz has decided that they will rename the Yu-Gi-Oh series (similar to how 4Kids names each new season of the anime: for example, Enter the Shadow Realm and Waking the Dragons), and they will, for each new segment, renumber all the duels starting from 1. That means that when the arcs are finally released in Graphic Novel format, they will not go from Volumes 1-38 (as they should), but from Volumes 1-7 (Yu-Gi-Oh!), and then more segmented arcs for Duelist Kingdom (Volumes 8+, the arc entitled "Duelist,") and Battle City (probably under the Duelist arc, but going into the late 20s for the original manga) and finally, the poorly-named "Millennium World" for everything taking place from the end of Battle City onward, when the "Memory arc" officially begins.
Now, to begin with, there is no "true" bringing of manga to the US. For one, the size of the books are always changed. Second, they lose their name-- they become "graphic novels" instead of "manga." The two don't really translate into one another like that.
No US manga-publishing company has yet to include the original slip-covers with their publications, let alone any special inserts (such as the posters or stickers always included with the Sailor Moon manga). To make matters worse, many companies (especially Viz, who did this with their first publishing of Ranma 1/2) change the number of pages per volume-- trying to compress whole stories into a volume, as opposed to leaving them the way they were originally published (which makes for more suspense).
The real kicker is when companies like Tokyopop decide to "re-release" the manga under a new title, and with new numbering for each volume that comes out. They did this with Peach Girl, but at least they had a good reason-- they had just started their "Authentic" manga line, in which volumes were finally released in the appropriate right-to-left way, as they'd originally been published. This meant no more reversed images (which can be of poor quality, or can confuse the reader). But it also meant laziness-- they stopped translating sound effects and "minor" speech, along with the original side and liner notes. There's no excuse for this.
Viz does not have this excuse when it comes to Yu-Gi-Oh. They are choosing to break the story up into arcs, which I understand will help them get it out faster. But why re-number the volumes? Why not just publish the first "Duelist" volume as "Volume 8," as it's SUPPOSED to be? Even if this means that Volume 8 and Volume 26 (or whatever volume the first "Millennium World" arc will be in) will be released close to each other, at least you're being true to the original series! There is ONE (count 'em, ONE!) Yu-Gi-Oh series, not two, not three, and not four!
The sad thing about this is they're not even doing a decent job with the naming of the arcs... just as Tokyopop did with the misnomer "Change of Heart" (supposedly since Momo changed from Toji to Kiley... but then she went back to Toji, and back to Kiley!), "Millennium World" is false. The true translation of the arc is "Memory World," but doubtless Viz thinks that would be too much of a spoiler for the true end of the Dark RPG series.
Sorry folks, here's the brutal truth (and you've been warned): Yami no Yuugi is DEAD. He cannot relive, redo, or remake any of his memories from Ancient Egypt. He can only RECALL them, and then go to the Afterlife as he was supposed to, had he not gone all Hero on us and sealed himself in the Millennium Items in order to save the world from imminent destruction via Zork, evil master of all things dark and ugly. Essentially, what that translates to is that we don't actually go back in time and change how Yami no Yuugi aka Pharaoh did things. We just see what happened... in the form of, what else, a GAME!
I'm really tempted to write a letter to Shonen Jump and tell them all this... but what do YOU think?
BONFIRE UPDATE! So it's been raining pretty miserably here lately... and as much as I'd like to claim the power over weather, I hold no such position among the Gods, so if it rains on Sunday, the bonfire's canceled. I still hope to see most of you at the LJ party (meeting at the Met around 1pm; usual place on the movie floor by the DDR machine). If you can't make it then, hopefully I'll see you around... I know most of you are going back to school within the next couple of days, so...
My secondary option is ice-skating. If anyone's interested, do let me know... otherwise, the plans are as they are.
I'm hoping to get WDKY14 (I've revised a chunk of it, with Mamono's help) back from Atlantis and Kysra, to see what they've thought. Otherwise, it'll be going up at FFnet/MMorg/DR/azurite_updates later tonight. ^_^ 15 and 16 are also coming soon, as are a whole host of drabbles and nonsense for people's belated wish-lists! Sorry, minna!
Anyway, it's back to the Dreamweaver board. ^_^

Date: 2004-12-30 05:17 am (UTC)Well, hey, if it rains, I'll so be going to Metreon (that is where you meant, right?).
Either way, laters!
Hee hee
Date: 2004-12-30 06:45 am (UTC)There's an LJ party organized by some of my friends, yes at the Metreon at 1pm. Bring $ for a movie, since that's probably what we're apt to doing. We usually end up hanging out there for hours... ^-^ The bonus is, if the party dies or if it's raining and the bonfire is a no-go, then the ice-skating rink is right nearby.
YAAAAY!

Date: 2004-12-30 07:36 am (UTC)Since everyone pretty much has an LJ who was going to go to the bonfire, it all works out in the end.

Date: 2004-12-30 09:05 am (UTC)^^; We get gipped out here.
Date: 2004-12-30 07:28 pm (UTC)*blink* Weren't they going to keep going with the original-- er, US dubbed original-- through battle city and skip to the Memory/Millennium Word in the SJs? *shrug* ^^; I just want to see Priest Seto... *shameless*
Re: ^^; We get gipped out here.
Date: 2004-12-31 04:21 am (UTC)They'll start releasing both the DK/BC arcs in new "sets" of their own, starting with what SHOULD be Volume 8, Volume 1 of "Duelist."
Feb. 2005 YGO's section features a nummy picture of a Priest Seto silhouette of sorts-- half of his face, looking deliciously evil-- sadly, in black and white. I want the color version! (Now you know why I buy the original manga.)
-_- I still think Viz is being stupid.
Re: ^^; We get gipped out here.
Date: 2004-12-31 10:34 pm (UTC)o.o Priest Seto??? *love*
^-^; If only...
