I've started another Ancient Egyptian argument on one of the ygo communities again. I didn't mean to, but you ever notice how there's some people that are complete sticklers about stupid things like Set/Seto and Atem/Atemu? It's like arguing about whether the Beatles were better than the Rolling Stones; frankly I think it's a matter of taste and not a matter of fact.
Look, from my standpoint, either Set or Seto is acceptable for the high priest's name. And Atemu is correct if you're following an entirely Japanese-romanization system of names (Yuugi, Anzu, Jounouchi, Honda, Otogi, Sugoroku, Mahaado, Aishizu/Ishizu, etc.), but ATEM is the correct spelling of the actual guy's name if you follow the rules of Ancient Egyptian names (ergo, Atem, Isis, Mahaad, Kalim). I'm really sick of getting into this argument-- I totally don't intend to, but you know me, I don't back away from anything, even when it's eyes are bloody red and it wants to bite my hand off.

Yeah, I finished "The Chamber of Secrets," but I was nitpicking throughout the entire movie (Steph brought over the DVD-- and yes, we made major headway with my Box of Burnable Papers) about bizarre little details. Seeing Kenneth Brannagh as Lockhart made my day though-- he fits the part so perfectly. So now I need Book 3 from mom, and see if I can speed read it before we all see the movie tomorrow. And I still have to hook up with those Fanime guys sometime tomorrow morning around 11:30ish, but... o_O None of them were online.
And now I'm heading out to Cris's because... wow, I got invited! :O More Brisco County, Jr. fun. I just need to find some food to bring along, or I shall be major with the guilt and the tripping. Yeah.
Oh, and did anyone else notice-- but on the CoS DVD, in the "Year One" recap, the guy playing Dumbledore was NOT the guy that died. They must have re filmed that sequence since they changed Dumbledore for Movies 2+ (but the original guy died, I know, I know). o_O Or am I imagining things?
What's everyone's stance on the whole scanlation thing? It's in my personal opinion that if a title is distributed in English (by Tokyopop, Viz, etc.) then the title should not be scanlated. Of course, sometimes companies pick up titles ridiculously late and such scanlations are already online. Okay, fine. But if the project is midway (as was with Hot Gimmick and other new titles), then said project should be dropped. Scanlators never give money directly to the Japanese distribution or licensing companies, nor the manga-ka. However, the people that pick up the distro for the USA, Canada, and other English speaking markets DO provide payment (however small in percentage) to the manga-ka. Yes, I know that re-dist isn't exactly profitable for manga-ka, but it gets their name heard world-round, and who doesn't want that?
Meanwhile, it IS illegal to scanlate something and then claim just because you're not making a profit off it, it's okay. It's not like fanfiction, where people realize that it's not the original material. Scanlations ARE the original material, they ARE what the artists slave over for months at a time. Just because you edit it into another language doesn't give you rights over it. And if it's available for purchase (even online, which tends to be cheaper than booksellers), then people should NOT be able to download a scanlated version. Exemptions MIGHT include particularly long titles like Hana Yori Dango and Yu-Gi-Oh, since it'll be 2009 before Viz ever gets around to finishing those damn things. But frankly people saying they don't have the money, or they speak English and they live in some poor, destitute country (with Internet... hah.) they should have an English copy... doesn't fly. If you speak English and have the 'Net, regardless of where you live, BUY THE DAMN ENGLISH COPY. Don't grab a scanlated version-- it probably takes more time anyway. Besides, officially licensed stuff tends to be better and more complete (not to mention proper English) than scanlations anyway. Yeesh. And textlations are NOT that bad.
