Kill the tweens.
May. 3rd, 2004 12:42 amI am turning into a cynic. Somebody shoot me with a paintball, quick!
I hate the 13-16 year olds that try to get in as Children to a PG13 movie. I hate the high schoolers that really think *I* am stupid enough to think THEY are kids. I hate the adults who look like 42-year-old truckers, and say they're students. Hey, some of them are, but they have IDs to prove it! And what person in their right mind does NOT have an ID of some sort? I mean, yeah, I have an excuse, I lost mine-- but the day I did, I immediately made an appointment to get a new one! And I have relatively accurate back-ups! Gawd.
And the ones online? Even worse. The ones on the RPG are slightly annoying in that *twitch twitch* "I won't say anything" way. And I mean the Darks. I think they're cute and funny, but they don't seem to understand how a lot of things work. That seems true for a lot of YGO community mods, which is sad. Why aren't there more adults into this? Where have all the people with a sense of respect for the English or Japanese languages and the canon characterization seen in a series?
YES, I get that Fanfiction is about exploring a part of a character, plot, or story aspect that isn't normally found in the canon series... but why bother calling it a fanfiction if you are going to MUTILATE the characters so much that they don't even seem like who you SAY they are? Fanfictions, while given a lot of leeway, still have to be RECOGNIZABLE!
And the bitchy tweens, the ones that are having Pre-PMS? (Or with some of them, it's like Menopause 40 years ahead of time.) One of them railed on me for asking people to report CYOAs on FFnet to Xing as abuse. Even though Xing himself emailed me to say that I was right, they were illegal, and could I help him hunt them down? I said sure, but obviously I need help. It's come to my attention that yes, report-abuse abuse is COMMON, and no, Xing doesn't investigate every report like he should (honestly, with most reports, it would take a few seconds to VERIFY that what is being reported as abuse is true)... but most abuse reports, I should think, are legit. People won't take the time to report abuse as a fic when they have NOTHING to base it off of.
So she got on my ass... and this is what was said:
Her: Subject: How dare you
Oh my.. I see the lot of your are very clueless and naive little children. If your are a teen, well, you have an IQ of a child. (OOOOOOH! DISS!)
Choose your own adventure stories are stories that authors but a lot of work into. They make numerous of pages and use a lot of their freetime to create them. There was never many Yugiou Choose your own adventure stories either. If you want to see a CYOA plague, look at the Yu Yu Hakusho section.
These type of stories were never interactive. Yes, maybe a few, but the majority of them weren't. The author decided which pages shall go up, and the reader has the decision of page to go to. The review section was never a chat board. Actually, it was a place to pressure the author to continue the story or else... x.X; Yes, I am an author of two choose your own adventure stories, and damn proud thank you.
Everythin goes through a trend. It's basically an evolution of things. If nobody went through a trend as they say, you might not even be reading this message here because there will be no color computors, or color T.Vs. Technology goes through a trend, an evolution for things to get better. If you hate trends, well, go back to the 1900's and become a woman whom will never write, be free, wear pants and only corsets with dresses, obey your husband at all times, cook, sew, and all that other old fashion stuff.
I think you'll be sincerely pissed off if someone reported your stories. Well, that's what happened to us, and we're sincerely pissed off that our time and effort in the stories has been wasted. Including the readers who loved to read them (also, taking around something that someone likes was never really that polite either. If some group of people took down all the "good stories", you'll pissed off, won't you?). What comes around will go around.. And it will come around.(insert evil laughter here). Besides, most of the Yugiou section is filled with shounen-ai and slash. It gets annoying. Very annoying. Really really annoy. To the point you want set the freakin' stories on fire! I don't mind it really... but there are too many. The other half is filled with mary sues.
AH-HA! See! Trend has struck again! Everyone is doing the slash/shounen-ai yaoi trend now! Or the ever more annoying mary-sue trend.
Oh yeah, I didn't put one swear word in here. I've been a good little girl. I'll let out my anger right now: Kiss my ass you mother fuckers.
Me: Hate to burst your bubble, but I am far from being a child or a "tween" such as yourself, let alone a "teen with the IQ of a child." (By the way, there happen to be many children out there who have IQs surpassing those of adults, so that statement was completely ridiculous, and having NOTHING to do with the statement at large.)
I recognize that CYOAs must take a lot of time and effort, (though it doesn't seem like it with most of the ones presented there) but of the ones on FFnet, *most* of them are breaking the explicitly stated FFnet rules/guidelines. These are the fics that ask readers to choose who they end up with, who gets killed off, or something like that.
FFnet's guidelines state that ANY fic that is interactive In *ANY* way (and that means the reader interacting with the fanfiction database in any way that is non-linear) is illegal. Even if a CYOA existed that, by some far-fetched miracle, did NOT have the usual blanks-to-fill-in, or choices in a long list, it would still be non-linear, and most likely, non-prose.
Point me to a WELL-WRITTEN CYOA on FFnet's YGO section, one that follows the same guidelines as FFnet and published CYOAs have established, and I will gladly and openly retract my argument that the fics are all deserving of abuse reports.
One more thing-- CYOAs are *NOT* a trend. They are a form of writing that has existed for many years; it is not something that fades in and out of existence. The same applies for yaoi/shounen-ai fics, Mary-Sues, and other assorted fic-styles and choices. They have been around in EVERY fandom since those fandoms were established on FFnet.
Trends have little to do with fanfiction anyway, let alone with women's rights. I suggest you do more research on the subject, and you might feel more enlightened. The concept of women's rights was not something that hit a random protestor in the 1920s and all of a sudden caused them to get up and fight back. It has been an issue for thousands of years.
But, since I don't like to stray off topic like SOME people (and I also respect the rules of English spelling and grammar), back on to YGO and CYOAs.
I don't read YYH. I don't write YYH. Therefore, it is none of my concern whether there are more CYOAs in that section or not; the writers THERE can complain if they feel so inclined. In the YGO section, one CYOA fic is ONE TOO MANY. Xing has established that they violate the FFnet rules, so be as proud as you want-- they're not the prose he's looking for on the site, and it clearly says so in the rules.
There are plenty of other places where you can publish such fics, and they can be read in a much easier manner; for example, you can have readers click "here" for a certain choice, or "there" for another one, rather than having to direct them to Chapter 2 for this, and 6 for that, and 12 for the other one...
Why, you can even make your own website (SHOCK!) with very little time and effort involved, and STILL have it look good and get as many hits as FFnet does for single CYOA stories.
Finally, I do commend you for managing to stay polite throughout MOST of your post. But resorting to petty name-calling, insulting and swearing at the end of your post reduces what respect, if any, you might have gained from any reader. People get angry online all the time, but there are better ways of expressing it than acting like, as you said, "a child"-- and a foul-mouthed one at that.
I dare. You're welcome.
Ranting made me feel a bit better.
I ranted at work too, which was nice. Ranted about the managers, the OCs, and the suspicious favoritism that seemed to be played for most of the awards given out this past Saturday at the S&S meeting. Siannan, Anthony, and Co seemed to be the only ones that deserved it... (people that didn't suck manager/OC-ass, I mean). Speaking of Siannan, she had a proposition for me that might make my summer a bit more interesting. Rather than a movie theater, how about Abercrombie and Bit-- I mean FITCH? Folding clothes for 4 hours, $11 an hour at night... and getting to do/wear/think whatever I want. Man, that sounds too good to be true.
Oh yes.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMBER!
*inhale, exhale* I don't have to work for the rest of the week. CELEBRATE! Good times are ahead... Payday is this week, Fanime is coming up, so is the SFSU Campus Invasion by AnimEigo... ^___^ Think happy thoughts. THINK. HAPPY. THOUGHTS.
