Okay, so I'm waiting for Dad to pick me up here at the house... Mom's not even here to see me off, the meanie. I don't even think I've seen her since yesterday morning. -.- Maybe even before that.
I'm probably going to miss the hour-long block of Yu-Gi-Oh if Dad sticks to his word and picks me up in 10 minutes, but if not, I've got it set to record anyway. ^_^ Hopefully there's enough tape. If not, people tell me what happens! Dub funnies and such!
I've tried to pack considering how bored out of my skull I'll be-- little to no comp access, many cousins with VERY different tastes from my own, and next to no money for shopping. *shrugs* I don't know, maybe I should call Jill and them and arrange to chill. I can stay there through Thursday (because I'm that crazy) since I pretty much took the whole week off. O_O
Hey, there's new people in the DM RPG! We now have Isis, Mokuba (COMISH MOKI!!!!!), and Jounouchi (??) ... I think. The Isis is strange; I think her SN is actually with a 1 (one) and not an I, because there's already a bunch of isis_ishtars and Isis_Ishtars and every other variation out there (*gags on site of "Ishizu"*)
*snickers* Priest Fluffy.
I'm going to have to work that one into CO7. *shuts up before she spoils*
Yaoi *does* scare me... but it's not because I don't accept gay/lesbian relationships. What disgusts me most is just because it's more accepted now, suddenly *every* male/female character in a tv show/movie/anime has the potential to have a same-sex 'encounter'. Suddenly, there's no more *room* for straight couples---it's almost abhoring to see a m/f relationship. I've had people *flame* me for writing a m/f lemon. O.o
Does anyone else see how I'm NOT THE ONLY ONE HERE?! Why is it that we can't find het fics anymore, not even smutty ones?! What happened to the days of splendiferous, overflowing LEMON? HENTAI!!!!!! ECCHI!! Gawd, it's getting hard to find even good m/f DOUJIN these days. Makes me all weepy.
I WANT TO START A HET ARCHIVE. Not because I'm a "hater," but because I'd like to find those fics without problems. I doubt FFnet will be installing a yaoi/slash/yuri/whatever filter anytime soon-- and if they did, it'd be a while before it took effect, let alone before people openly categorized their fics as such (though enough of them litter their summaries with 'YAOI!! BOY ON BOY!!') I don't know, is this even plausible?
So, like my friend above said, where have all the straights gone? Where have all the knowledgable-about-gay-relationships people gone? I'm living in the city that was, up until recently, in the middle of contorversy-- SHOCK! Gay marriages! Yeah, homosexuality has been around as long as the human genes have, probably. And people have been having sex since-- well, DUH. So homosexuality is not a new thing. Very commonplace where I'm from, and thus, when you're in different places, sometimes you have to watch yourself and what you say-- not everyone else is comfortable with the fact that there are same-sex couples out there, or girls that are attracted to BOTH genders, or guys that are too. What gets my goat (to quote chaos_val) is that, like she said, so many people so adamant about yaoi would probably never stand up for the IRL couples who are in love with each other and are not (as a cry-worthy summary on FFnet read) "using each other for comfort sex." I mean LOVE is the big thing after all, right? And if someone can present me with a fic --any fic, any fandom where the canon characters are not yaoi or don't have a sexual preference-- that has the person falling in love with someone of the same sex and starting a sexual relationship-- then damn, link me already! I'd love to read a fic where that's done right! Because THAT is realism. (Not to say comfort sex and all that fetishness isn't, but in the fic world, you have to work harder to make that seem anything less than funny.)
Again, I love my friends. :) You know who you are.
Oh, and fanfiction by definition- it's one of those things that's subject to interpretation. But there are manga-ka out there who refuse to let their work get doujined and such... authors that will adamantly oppose the changing of their characters. I doubt Kazuki Takahashi is one of them, given that he's sort of a hermit manga-ka, from what I've heard, but the way I see it, if he wanted Bakura to be a cutting, suicidal maniac, he would have written him that way. And as for relationships... well, it is one of those things that blows horrendously out of proportion and turns a successful shonen story (Yu-Gi-Oh, Ranma) into something SHOUJO!!! Can't have that in Shounen Jump, now can we? (props to anyone that realized I was being sarcastic there)
Anyone else notice that shonen stories tend to last longer than the shoujo ones, even though the latters have drawn-out romance, angst, drama, rinse, repeat? The longest shojo series I have read/heard of is Hana Yori Dango... that comes in at 36 volumes. Ranma and Yu-Gi-Oh both have 38; Inuyasha (which is semi-shonen) stands to have even more than that. And god knows how long pure-shonen stuff like DBZ is.
Back to fics... no fic can be a carbon copy of anything in the series. Even if it's just your take on an episode, taking dialogue from an anime or speech bubbles and action effects from a manga... putting all that into PROSE takes some work, some thought, and a heck of a lot of creativity. Everyone does it differently... so there are multitudes of fics possible for even a single fandom, looking at a single episode, and focusing on TWO characters.
Yeah, having non-canon pairings is what makes fics cool (I've been known to hit up the Seiya/Usagi archives, and I am admittedly a huge fan of Seto/Anzu) but you push the card when the character isn't even recognizable anymore. I suppose Seto in particular is a case worthy of being shrinkified (i.e. psychologically analyzed), since he never seems to profess a romantic/sexual desire for ANYBODY, ANYTIME -- and thus people have more liberties with him in fics (Of course, people still ignore the fact that he hates Jounouchi with a passion, and that Yuugi is a good foot shorter than him).
So let your imaginations run wild and free-- so long as I can recognize the character beyond his "impossibly deep blue eyes." If your character could be replaced by a standard cardboard insert, then it's better off being an original fic with OCs-- OOC is a crime. PERIOD. (I really can't think of exceptions to it, when OOC might be good. Funny, yes, but not necessarily good, especially in serious-fic)
GAH, I hope I'm not starting another fight on the DMRPG. >_< It's just that Marik and Ryou going on candy sprees has got me shuddering, reminded of pathetic authors' notes in the beginning of fics. MARIK AND RYOU, two of the evillest guys in YGO history, going nuts on a CANDY spree?! Maybe for omake, but yeesh... It was a one-time thing, though. Otherwise everyone in the RPG kicks major ass. :)
I should shut up about the whole Set/Seto, Atem/Atemu thing, shouldn't I? I can't argue that Seto is *his* name while Atemu is wrong-- they follow the same rule of Japanese syllablry, though Seto's name never appeared in heiroglyphs... >_< Gah.
*sigh* What I need right now... is some really good fanfiction.
I already re-read Power of the Nile... re-read In the Sands of Egypt... re-read Full Circle...
I'm going to peruse my favorites list and find something yummy.
