OH GROW UP!
Apr. 4th, 2004 03:02 pmAUGH! How did I know this was going to happen? Yeah, I'm a bit of a picky reader, but when I find a fic I like, I stick with it. Thus, when it gets a little WEIRD, I like to let the author know. I'm not the flaming type (unless you plagiarize me or my friends, then you're toast) or anything-- but I'm a firm believer that concrit is good for you! Yeah, it hurts, but PUH-LEASE, saying that you're going to murder anyone that tries to point out your errors?
GAH. Okay, so I was reading w-cat's "If I'm Not The One," and it started out very good-- up until the last chapter, when Yugi suddenly got into an accident, had a surgery, and fell into a coma. I was like "o_O Huh??" So I left a review pointing that out-- and that Joey's accent is not Manhattan, but Brooklyn. Call me a nitpicker, but hello! The details make a fic come alive, and regardless of your age, it takes 0.09 seconds to do a search on Google or Yahoo or whatever and make sure your facts are straight. It pisses me off when people whine about that, and say things like "Don't pick on me, I--" and go on and on about their age, or how they got teased as a child, or whatever.
I commend writers with the chutzpah to post on FFnet and expose their work --good and bad-- for all to see. Age isn't always experience, but the older you are, the more schooling you've tended to get, and some of the basics just stick with you, even when it's "just" for writing fanfiction.
"WHO CARES IF YUGI GOT IN SURGERY AND SUDDENLY GOT INTO A FUCKING COMA? I’m no doctor!!!! How the hell should I know? I’M NOT SMART...BELIEVE ME!!!"
I care. I'm a reader, I'm a writer, I'm a human. I like things to sound like they can happen, even in a fandom like Yu-Gi-Oh. I like to think that other writers CARE when they write, and do their best to write plausibly and intelligently. But oh! W-Cat's gone and insulted her own intelligence--- and she wants us to BELIEVE HER! It's *NOT* *THAT* *HARD* to look online and find the answers to your questions, like "Can surgeries result in a coma?" or "Can surgeries be performed on comatose patients?"
GRRRRRRRRR!!!
I DON’T FUCKING CARE IF THERE’S A SLIGHT DIFFERENCE IN A BROOKLYN ACCENT AND A MANHATTAN ACCENT! I’m CANADIAN...how am I supposed to tell the difference?
Well then gee, why did you bother using the term in the first place? You don't *have* to say what accent he has; you can say Joey had a "thicky accented" voice, or whatever-- no one's forcing you to say anything! I can't believe that she feels the need to swear and proclaim that she doesn't care about what makes a fanfiction worth someone's time-- you might as well tell the world "I don't give a shit what you think, but I'm posting this anyway!" It makes you look awfully immature.
I honestly wonder if *I'm* going to get flamed because of this. If I do, I sure as hell won't back down, because I take pride in my work and spend lots of time checking out every detail. The amount of research on WDKY9 alone made the total fic-writing time over 2 months-- and while that might irk some of my readers, I'm damn proud of the results!
She said she was going to "straighten things out," but all she did was whine, complain, and insert my name for a good measure. And by the way, author's notes aren't ALLOWED to take up entire chapters, SHMUCK!
I liked the story-- up till now. Time will tell if it's still worth my time.
Now I have to leave... do some dishes, and go to Fisherman's Wharf to see Joe. And eat a burger.

If people can't take CC, well... their loss... :)
BTW, WKDY is taking me a lot longer than just one evening to read through.. I had to go back and read to previous chapters and get all my facts straight. I'm done about half, so I can send that to you if you want so you can just see how things are going and make any necessary corrections.

Date: 2004-04-04 06:47 pm (UTC)Which I did, if you care to read. *grins* It was quite fun, I really enjoyed it. Since she might erase it (I don't like to 'sign' my 'flames' which is really isn't, but anyway) here it is. I didn't even insult her. Much. She insulted herself, I just built on it.
O_O Talk about Gone With the Wind
Date: 2004-04-05 12:43 pm (UTC)Re: O_O Talk about Gone With the Wind
Date: 2004-04-05 01:27 pm (UTC)Basically, I told her that she proved her own stupidy over again by saying she was stupid, and who should believe her facts when she was calling herself stupid.
Then I went on to explain that when fanfiction deals with reality it has to be believable.
I also told her if she didn't like critism to stop writting right now, because no person should write if they can't tolerate being crisized a bit.
You hadn't even flamed her and she exploded like that showed a lack of intellegence because she couldn't use anything besides swear words to get her unhappiness across. I told her to keep saying she didn't like to be critisize because then people would see that and just flame her because they could.
THEN I went on to tell her that she had no excuse for even posting this up since you had signed your review and she could have e-mailed you about this rather than TRYING to gain support by putting your name up.
Lastly, I told her that obviously she had a major chip on her shoulder because she was really bothered by something that so wasn't a flame (and barely critism at that) and that you obviously weren't bothered by it. Then I told her to go ahead and put me up in one of her chapters, because I wasn't nice like you, I didn't leave an e-mail address.
I think the fic was taken off because it was reported for abuse, she would have made a big deal out of it if she had taken it down.

Date: 2004-04-04 08:13 pm (UTC)Plus, it's not about being perfect, it's about inconsistencies. If the story doesn't flow, then what's the point of writing one? She should be glad you even spent time pointing out those minor details.
Ah well. Screw her.

Date: 2004-04-05 08:18 pm (UTC)Her reaction was totally uncalled for. What's sad is that it seems she had talent but it's wasted with that attitude she carries.

Date: 2004-04-05 03:36 pm (UTC)She took the story down an hour after I submitted a review and told her what I thought...I think she got it, though, because authors always have their reviews forwarded to their email, right? The only difference was, I signed my name...so I wouldn't be surprised if I run into a 'secret flamer'.
I hope it's not something I said... I was tactful about it---or atleast as tactful as someone can be when they're pointing out that dedicating an A/N to outright *flame* a reviewer for being honest is just a downright rotten thing and if she keeps that up, no one's going to want to review her story...
Hmm...
