FICSEX: What you should take into consideration before writing a steamy R or NC-17 fic.

You know why I call [livejournal.com profile] atlantian_magic The Steam Queen? Because her stuff is amazingly accurate for lime fics. I mean, the male response, the kinds of things they say and think-- she's got it down. I'm not sure how she's got it down, and it's none of my business, but I will say that experience in a given field makes it easier to include such things in a fanfiction. Maybe that's why I've been tampering with the idea of a lemon scene in the later stages of some of my fics-- MMorg only, of course. *shrugs* And people seem to want good, funny hentai. Animes like that exist (Cool Devices with a twist, maybe?) but you rarely see anyone take on the "first time, first try" affair between a guy and a girl (it really only works with het pairings) and have them have more to laugh about than MOAN about.

I can come up with a bunch of lines already! *snickers* Guys are funny, you know?

Choose-Your-Own-Adventures are ILLEGAL on FFnet, and with the multitude of them springing up on FFnet, I really want to report them. I should, but I'm not a snitch! I'm a concerned author! >_> Yeah, I sound like those overly concerned mothers that think big eyes and nudity in anime is bad. We all want THEM to shut up. I don't want to be the Author Who Thought Wrong.

But still, authors that say "You choose the ending" (esp. where pairings are concerned) truly bother me. It shows a lack of creativity, not to mention care and thought for your story. Whenever I plan a story, I always come up with at least TWO major components:
* The beginning (i.e. "What if...")
* The end (i.e "This is what would happen [in the long run] if...")

For "Prophecy Girl" I came up with--
"What if Tea took Isis's place in Battle City?"
and "If Tea took Isis's place, she'd have to duel Kaiba. The end result of their dueling and everything would be him seeing a new side to her, and vice versa."

Okay, so it's not a spoiler-iffic "ending" but you get what I mean. CYOA fics are/show that the author is:
* Lazy
* Indecisive
* In need of an editor/beta to bounce ideas off of
* In need of more time, to flesh ideas out
* A newbie to the fic universe
* Unaware of how real CYOAs work
* An insult to all of us authors who take our time to thoughtfully come UP with plots and decide important things like pairings IN ADVANCE!

I am ecstatic for the presence of [livejournal.com profile] ygo_badfic. I have a lot of nominating to do! BWAHA.

Hey, for those curious why I support paticular pairings, here's why:

Seto/Anzu - Anzu is the *only* person in all of YGO to lecture Kaiba-- more than once. She stands up to his attitude in a way that is reasonable, but calm-- and yet she still fights Kaiba for every mean thing he says. She cares about him AND his brother. And they're both stubborn as hell, and ubercute. They're also the most mature of their "groups" (though Seto's group consists of himself and Mokuba, so that's a given).

Mai/Jounouchi - This is canon. There are no ifs, ands, or butts about it. The dub butchers this a little bit, but even so, you can't deny the attraction. Jounouchi initially admires Mai for her spitfire and attitude, but since Yugi needs duel chips to get into Pegasus' castle, Anzu has to duel her-- thus, Jounouchi has to root for Anzu. However, when they meet again in the VR world, Jounouchi protects Mai, despite getting thrown into a duel with her as "Madame Butterfly." Mai's role is to be the sexy, older woman; Jounouchi is the clueless brute who somehow wins her heart. Jounouchi's affections for Mai become apparent in Battle City when he throws himself between her and Malik's blast that will send her to the Shadow Realm; he is willing to risk his life for her. He is no stranger to the Shadow Realm; he knows what it does to people, and he doesn't want to see that happen to Mai.

When she is in a coma, Jounouchi is distinctly distraught, but continues fighting-- he vows to hurt Malik for Mai's sake, and even goes so far as to throw the Battle Royale portion of the Battle City finals. He wants to fight Malik himself. Mai, meanwhile, is slowly losing her sanity-- and her memories. Jounouchi is the last person she forgets, and the first person she remembers-- her sole reason for waking up. Earlier, Jounouchi also had a dream of his friends helping him up off the floor-- and even Mai was there, even though, being out of high school, she is distinctly out of place. As she reaches out her hand to him and smiles, Jounouchi blushes. It's quite cute. Jounouchi stubbornly refuses to admit Mai's presence in his dream, which causes Mai to second-think her need for Jounouchi in her life-- so Anzu yells at Jounouchi, and Jounouchi ends up proving himself by "saving" Mai as best we can.

Later in the series, Mai returns, but she's not the Mai we all know and ... well, she's not the same. She's upset that she's lost to Yugi and his friends not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES! And so she's joined the forces of the DOOM SYNDICATE, of her own free will. So she's pretty much BAD. And when all that mess is over, her relationship with Jounouchi is pretty damn close to shattered. She's going to leave to go somewhere else, and the final goodbye between her and Jounouchi is something to BAWL over. In KC Grand Prix, Jounouchi often thinks and asks about Mai, but it isn't until recent episodes that she reappears. She obviously has a strong influence on Jounouchi-- like no other girl truly has.

They work because they both have attitude, and because they both contrast and complement one another. Mai is the mature one; sophisticated and determined. She's used to being a loner and not needing anyone. Jounouchi is pretty immature, but he's as loyal as one can be, despite his brutish nature. He learns the value of friendship and teamwork, and realizes that Mai is important to him, and he doesn't want to "let" het go.

Yugi/Anzu or Yami/Anzu - You don't see me writing it anymore, but I did, for a time, support it. It is somewhat canon. You have to take into account a few things, though--

(1) Yugi does NOT have the courage to tell Anzu how he feels. That courage is something that truly only develops in him at the end of the YGO manga, when Atem/Yami goes on to the Afterlife

(2) Anzu is NOT crushing on her best friend, but on Yami/Atem. She continues to pine after him, up until the point it really hits her that the "spirit of the Puzzle" is dead, can NEVER get his own body (sorry folks, it's TRUE. You can't bring the dead back to life, and you can't give a soul a body without displacing another one), and does NOT feel the same way about her. At least, as far as we know. Once Anzu realizes all this, her feelings begin to wane, and she, like everyone else, moves on.

(3) Neither Yugi or Anzu are impulsive people by nature. Atem, likewise, is not some horny bastard. Pharaoh or no, he was young, and never shown as having any sortof harem, concubines, or sex slaves. He wouldn't have such impulses in the current timeline anyway-- especially with the thought of being in another body.

Aside from that, it is a canon pairing, assuming you can find a way to get Anzu/Yugi to admit their feelings for one another-- and NOT have Yami/Atem get in the way. Or, you can find a way to plausibly make Yami/Atem fall for her-- though that fic would probably end sadly, considering he *has* to go back to the Afterlife... or at least, concentrate on the duels.

Shizuka/Honda - Honda puts real effort into his pursuit of Shizuka, even knowing it's risking his friendship with Jounouchi. Of course, he probably knows and trusts Jounouchi to the point where:
(1) If Jounouchi *really* had a problem with it, he'd back off. But Jounouchi can't take care of his sister forever; Shizuka *is* her own person, even if she's a little blind to the real world (bad pun, I guess).

(2) But more than likely, Jounouchi would understand. After all, Honda is his best friend, and Shizuka is his precious sister.

Honda also doesn't have a bad rep, the way Otogi/Duke does. Jounouchi really does NOT like Otogi, especially after that dog-suit incident. He might have Otogi somewhere on the same list as Kaiba, which means NOT SUITABLE FOR MY SISTER.

True, Otogi/Shizuka would, theoretically work, but--
* Shizuka seems afraid of Otogi's pushiness. It's like, she's used to it from her brother, but from other guys, especially ones pursuing her in the romantic sense, she needs that gentility, the chivalry, the... overwhelming niceness. That's only something she can get from Honda-- or, if you want to be weird, Yugi.

* Otogi would need to be devoted to Shizuka alone, and be able to prove that not just to her, but to Jounouchi, and likely to Anzu as well, since Anzu is Shizuka's closest "girl friend." Anzu and Jounouchi both know how much of a jerk Otogi can be, so it would be no easy task.

* Why is Otogi going after her, anyway? It seemed like he was doing it just because Honda was-- and of course, because he wanted to duel and such, but couldn't do so with his freakish pep squad stalking him. You didn't see THEM on the Battle Ship, now didja? He was defeated by Yugi, gets more than enough attitude from Jounouchi-- sio who's left to antaognize... ah, Honda!

Jounouchi/Anzu - It's a rare coupling to find, but a good one, especially if you like a fic with a good deal of drama, angst, and attitude. These fics, especially with a Seto angle, are fantastic. But the problem is, you can't make it canon unless you REASONABLY take Mai out of the picture. You can do this by staging it in season 1 (when Jounouchi tended to annoy Yugi more than be friendly with him) or by staging it after the DOOM/DOMA arc, when Mai went evil. But you'd have to explain why Anzu would return the feelings (if she did)-- or if it was a case of Rebound. Which it could easily be (Mai seems to reject Jounouchi because he dares to be better than her but still care; Anzu realizes that Yami's duels and past outweigh her importance in his life). But if you did Season 1, you couldn't use Seto, since he was a) crazy and b) evil.

AND NOT...
Seto/Jounouchi - They hate each other. Neither of them are gay. 'Nuff said. Applies to *all* yaoi pairings with Seto, including the Yami/Seto ones. Especially the ones with Seto as uke, because you know he'd never take it.

Seto/Shizuka - As interesting an idea as it is --to have one of Seto's worst enemy's sister paired up with him-- it wouldn't work. For starters, Shizuka is a very sheltered girl, and knows very little of the kind of "harsh reality" Kaiba has seen. She wasn't even in Duelist Kingdom-- she couldn't have been. She's also fairly immature. I'm not sure what the verdict is, but last I checked, she was only 14 or so. Kaiba is 16 by Duelist Kingdom, and quite possibly 17 by Battle City. By KC Grand Prix, he's 18. Despite it only being 2 years or so difference, the maturity level is enough.

These fics always make one of them act ridiculously OOC. Shizuka is just TOO dependent on her brother for everything, and hasn't been involved in enough harsh life to really get a taste of what it's like being on the short end of the stick. She didn't even live with Jou while he was being abused by his father, etc. etc. The entire Seto/Shizuka relationship is total FANON CRAP.

Any Incestuous pairing (Seto/Mokuba; Jounouchi/Shizuka) -- because it's SICK!

Any Yami pairing (Yugi/Yami, Ryou/Bakura, Marik/Y.Marik) -- because it's IMPOSSIBLE! Because the Yamis have evil vendettas that have nothing to do with sex or pleasure, and because they don't give a shit what happens to their vessels (except in Yugi's case), as long as they can keep stealing Millennium Items/killing things/getting revenge/getting power.

Things I hate/excuses for not pairing two people up:

Anzu with anybody - Her friendship speeches. People, please! The friendship speech thing is a DUB CREATION! In the real manga and the original anime, Anzu gives a whole lot more 'tude than she does "sappy speeches." Besides, if you watched previous 4Kids dubs, you'd know that they butcher out all the good stuff and replace it with meaningful, educational content. Like the Power Rangers, except they have IRL hot guys to make up for it. ^^;

Shizuka with anybody, especially Seto - Her dependency on Jounouchi. Don't get me wrong, it's a canon fact that she's about as leechy as a human can get to an older sibling, but cut the girl a little slack-- she has been losing her sight since she was born, and coming from a broken family --where her mom didn't care enough about Jounouchi, and where her dad was an abusive alcoholic-- Shizuka looks up to her brother as not just a role model, but really, the sort of guy she'd be INTERESTED in. Meaning, not Jounouchi himself (eew!) but with a guy LIKE him. The closest match, in all honesty, is Honda. You can't NOT pair her up with someone [else] *IF* you can find a canon way to make her behave around said guy; a reason to LIKE him. Canon Shizuka has NO reason to like Seto Kaiba. Honda and Otogi, yes, and maybe even Yugi, but NOT Seto.

But enough about that.

I had something to add to your *marvelous* (I really did like it!) rant about pairings/characters:

One thing that I find -particularly- interesting is that nobody save me and a few others find Shizuka/Serenity to be unbearably annoying. I mean, people totally trash Anzu/Tea up the wazoo and yet Shizuka is a hundred-fold worse, in my opinion. What's with the Tea bashing and the non-Serenity bashing? (Notice how I ingeniously use the English and Japanese names? Bwhahaha) And yet, people refuse to pair Seto with Tea because she's so supposedly annoying then turn around and shove he and Serenity together. Bah! Stupid fangirls!

And it really is a shame about Yami/Atem not having his own body and being *dead* and all, but honestly he just makes for a hotty and it's just plain fun to read a good fic where he and Anzu are paired together. Personally, I don't go for Tea/Yugi because he just seems to little and younger than she and I can't help but hear quietly, in the back of my head, "statutary". I know, I'm bad, but honestly, look at the poor kid. His growth is so stunted that it would be like making it with a midgit. (<-- was that spelled right?)
