azurite: (sailormoon - pgsm senshi)
[personal profile] azurite
OMG, only two more days to go! But I'm sure I'll still have lots to say on Sailor Moon. The past 27 days have been pretty thought-provoking, actually. The problem is, since this originated from Sailor Failures on Tumblr, there's no way to see everyone else who's doing it, because they could be posting ANYWHERE on the Internet! And perhaps not everyone who happens to be using LJ or DW is even using similar tags to mine...

Well, if you are reading this and have participated (or will participate in) this meme, link me to it! I want to read your responses, too!

Given the wide variety of personalities in Sailor Moon, when I say I'm "least like" a particular Soldier, that's taking into account her best traits and her worst ones. And every Senshi's got them--they've all been highlighted in some form or another throughout the series (regardless of canon), so I think it's fair to say I've considered them all when I say... I'm least like Ami/Amy/Sailor Mercury.

I've never been the shy, reserved, studious type. In fact, I think people that strive so hard for perfect grades and get worked up over someone else getting a better score are a bit crazy, and need to relax and live life a little. Usagi and Minako never have problems with that, but they're considered to be lazy, childish, and riding on the coat-tails (or sailor collars, perhaps?) of those around them. But consider Rei, who attends a prestigious Catholic girls' academy with an "elevator" system only because her father is a politician, but is still well-liked at her school. Consider Makoto, who's able to transfer from another school but, despite an undeservedly bad reputation that followed her, is able to move through her classes and participate in many extracurriculars without (much) incident. So it's not impossible to fall somewhere between the extremes of Ami and Usagi/Minako, as far as studying and "having a life" goes.

Ami has trouble telling people how she really feels, whether it's that she likes them, wants to spend time with them, wishes she were useful to them... in the live action, this resulted in Ami becoming corruptible and turning into Dark Mercury, a pretty major threat against the Sailor Senshi. Because the live action never extended into a second season, we didn't see Chibiusa, the original "corruptible" one (she became Black Lady when the Wise Man literally got his hand on her). The next closest character to Chibiusa's childlike innocence? Ami, all the way. Her treatment in the live action didn't surprise me one bit. In fact, as far as the various Senshi personalities go from one form of canon to the other, Ami is probably one of the few that retains her personality, almost to the letter.

While Usagi can be a bit more of a crybaby in the anime than in the manga, and more of an actual teenager than her manga self in the live action, Ami is always the same: studious, shy, reserved, conservative, blah blah...

She's also got short hair, has no problem wearing huge glasses, rarely dresses up for "hanging out," even with the girls, and is pretty flat-chested. Those are all things I would NEVER do (in fact, while I do wear glasses, I insist on them being stylish :P). That's not to say Ami's got no sense of self-awareness, or no sense of style...it's just that she rarely seems to employ it, versus a girl like cosmopolitan Anime!Rei, who seems to relish any opportunity to get out of her school uniform (even though she looks great in it, she knows that it represents a "certain kind" of girl and school: the well-off, privileged one, which Anime!Rei seems to have no desire to appear as), or her shrine maiden clothing (even though again, she looks great in it, and it's even iconic for her; in the anime, it's not what she wants to do with her life, it's just part of her duties "for now").

I suppose I have more of a personal connection with the Inner Senshi than the Outer System Soldiers, since they're the ones I "met" first and "grew up with," so to speak, and I definitely agree more with Usagi's more naive-but-not-as-extreme methods of solving problems. They generally tend to work, given the heart she puts into it. But I actually feel like I have more in common with Michiru (mischievous/playful, artistic, dedicated) and Haruka (active, flirty) than I do with Ami. Heck, even Setsuna (fashionable, interested in time) and Hotaru (love purple! Er...and I'm skinny, used to wear a lot of black, and am pretty pale).

If you were to include even the Starlights in this comparison, then I have a few traits in common with Seiya, for sure, and probably even a few with Yaten and Taiki, although it's been a while since I've watched the Stars anime or read the Stars arc of the manga that I wouldn't be able to say which traits with a lot of confidence...just enough to say I feel more like them than I ever would Ami.

Sorry, Sailor Mercury? I think she's a cool character, but I have a very hard time relating to her, since I feel like we have so little in common.
