azurite: (sailormoon - unforgotten uranepu)
[personal profile] azurite
And we have reached the halfway point of the 30 Days of Sailor Moon meme, brought to you by the genius talent, Frizzy, over at Sailor Failures. Frizzy is the mastermind behind Four King Hell, a Sailor Moon webcomic that I powered through yesterday...laughing (almost) all the while. It's excellent, so if you're a Sailor Moon fan, check it out. And if you know if any other good Sailor Moon webcomics, point me at 'em!

Well, if we're discussing Outer System Soldier attacks, it seems only fair to list them all, and then break them down by awesomeness:

Sailor Uranus
* World Shaking - Her standard attack. I like how it sounds in the anime, when there's this pow! kind of sound as she slams her hand into the earth and uses it to draw out a planet-shaped blast of gold energy. It probably helps that Megumi Ogata, who voiced Haruka/Sailor Uranus, is an excellent seiyuu (VA).

* Space Sword Blaster - Because she's got a Talisman, too! Of course, a sword is very fitting for Haruka... In the anime, it's much more ornate than it is in the manga. In the anime, it's pretty much a scimitar covered in jewels. In the manga, it's more sword-like--a saber, perhaps? I mean, the thing is supposed to be called the "Space Saber," (Space Sword?) isn't it? She basically cuts an enemy to pieces! That's kind of cool. Magical swords!

* Space Turbulence - An attack that only appears toward the end of the manga, after the Senshi have upgraded to their "Star" forms. And she uses it when she goes evil, too! But there's not much to it. She just calls it out and energy blasts from the heavens.

Sailor Neptune
* Deep Submerge - Don't get your nails dirty, Neptune! This attack basically drowns any enemy in her way. It really does submerge enemies...deeply. Under a tidal wave. Created by a ringed planet made entirely of water-like energy.

* Submarine Reflection - Neptune's attack using her talisman, the Deep Aqua Mirror. It can reveal an enemy's weakness or blast them away.

* Submarine Violon Tide - Okay, so what Neptune USES for this attack is a VIOLIN, but she clearly says "VIOLON," which is a different instrument in the same family. How a star violinist and owner of an expensive-ass Stradivarius violin would make this mistake (if it is one) is beyond me, but whatever. Yay for using non-magical items in magical ways. She uses music and magic to blast enemies with a wave of energy. And of course, when she goes evil, it's this manga-only attack that she uses against Sailor Moon. Uh-oh.

Sailor Pluto
* Dead Scream - Her standard attack. She whispers it, unlike all the other Senshi, who yell their attacks, but it has the same effect as the other Outer System Senshi: a planet forms and blasts its way toward the enemy, utterly destroying them (most of the time). Pluto, unlike the other Outer System Senshi, always had her "talisman" (the Garnet Orb) with her--atop her Big Ass Key™ (Time Staff, whatever it's called). How she discovered that the Orb and her pure heart talisman were one and the same, we're never shown...but it's never painless, given all the other folks' experiences with getting their pure hearts ripped out that we saw in both the anime and the manga.

* Time Stop - The forbidden attack. Use this and...well, it stops time. Pluto, as the guardian of time, dies as a result.

* Chronos Typhoon - Another Garnet Orb attack. I think this one is only in the manga and maybe SOME of the video games.

* Garnet Ball - A one-off attack, I'd say. I think it's only in the manga, and even then, only once or twice. But she uses her Garnet Orb, of course.

* Dark Dome Close - Part of her ritual for closing the Gates of Time. It doesn't have anything to do with Time Stop, ironically. She can survive this attack, but it's odd...what exactly does closing the Gates of Time do to an enemy, anyway? I mean, unless they were "between dimensions," what good does it do?

* Galactica Cannon - Her "link" attack, as I like to call it (based off the name given to multi-character/joint attacks in the Sailor Moon RPG: Another Story) with Sailor Saturn...or rather, evil Sailor Saturn, in the manga, after Galaxia reincarnated them as evil Senshi. Yes, a Sailor Senshi with an energy cannon. Never a good thing.

She has many link techniques with other Senshi in the Sailor Moon: Another Story RPG, but I guess since those aren't HER attacks exclusively, they're not worth mentioning.... But still, it's fun to pair unusual Senshi together and imagine what their attacks could do!

Sailor Saturn
* Death Reborn Revolution - Reborn or Ribbon? Causing the end of the world or just a damn powerful attack, on the level of Sailor Moon's Silver Crystal? If there's controversy over anything in the Sailor Moon canon, I think this belongs on the list. The "reborn/ribbon" thing is likely a pun; in Japanese, the two are "spelled" slightly differently with katakana, but there have been times when a possible "typo" was made and what probably SHOULD have been "reborn" ended up as "ribbon." Plus ribbons show up in the attack anyway, so.... Also in the SMAS RPG. Of course, while powerful there, it's not a major attack that could possibly cost Saturn her life. Similar to how Pluto's "Time Stop" gets a bit dumbed down for the game. They're such cool attacks, but it's no fun if they involve self-sacrifice every time you use that Senshi in the game, amirite?!

* Bringing ruin to the end of the world - According to The Oracle, the Sailor Moon Encyclopedia, there's no real name for the thing Saturn is best known for, the thing the other Outer System Soldiers fear she will do and actually try to prevent her awakening (i.e. KILL her) because of. Saturn is considered the "Messiah of Silence," (or rather, Mistress 9 was, but Hotaru was the host of both, so it's sort of ambiguous...) the bringer of the end of the world. But what no one else knows is that, in doing so, she opens the door (metaphorically) for the world to be saved, too, for it to be healed--and that's where Sailor Moon steps in. Their powers in this regard are almost polar opposites, which is why it's not surprising that people suspect Saturn is as powerful as Moon. All Saturn has to do is drop her Silence Glaive and that's it--game over, world done, buh-bye. While she actually DOES this in the manga (!), it's only talked about in the anime.

* Silence Wall - A defensive attack? Isn't that a contradiction? It's also the only one of its kind--I don't think any other Senshi really have defensive attacks, not even Mercury. Her Sabao Spray is more support than anything else, serving to fog up the battlefield. But Silence Wall is a wall that protects the Senshi and any other allies of Saturn against enemy attacks. Pretty cool, coming from someone with the ability to destroy EVERYTHING. She uses this in the anime too, but it also goes under the name "Silent Wall."

* Silence Glaive Surprise - It's a surprise because we have no idea what it does! But it's an attack that appears in the manga. She's got an evil version, "Galactica Glaive Surprise," that she uses against Sailor Moon toward the final arc.

* Galactica Cannon - The same one mentioned under Sailor Pluto. Seriously, two of the most badass Senshi in terms of their power levels, and then you COMBINE them to make a magical cannon? That's just...overkill.

So, knowing all of the attacks (minus link techs from the SMAS RPG), which one is the coolest?

That's definitely going to be "Death Reborn Revolution." Even if it's NOT the attack that actually brings ruin to the world and allows a whole swath of destruction to be rebooted by "cleaning the slate," it's still a damn cool attack. In the anime, it's this attack that actually drains Saturn of most of her life energy (and probably would have drained it all, had Sailor Moon not rushed into the dimension where Pharaoh 90 was after Saturn dived in). In the SMAS RPG, it just plain looks cool, with lots of gold ribbons everywhere.

And Saturn is a cool Senshi--probably the youngest, unless you count Chibiusa (and are they near the same age or is Chibiusa younger? Time traveling daughters always screw with things...). But she's probably got the toughest duty, the hardest existence--I mean, even the other Outer System
Soldiers wanted to kill her--even Pluto! Yeah sure, they were doing it thinking that she would HAVE to bring about the Silence, no questions asked, but she IS a Sailor Senshi. She's also an interesting character to explore, given her sheltered life and her unique ability to heal (!) when she's not transformed. And I think in the manga, she's actually part cyborg in the Infinity arc!
