I'm glad I started this 30 Days of Sailor Moon Meme from Sailor Failures on Tumblr on March 1st, because I never have to remember what day I'm on...I just look at my calendar!

And now it's Day 9! Time for I kind of went into this yesterday, with "favorite villain," but it's not like I have one enemy out of all the baddies (youma, cardians, droids, lemures, phages, and all their masters) that I hate, hate, hate.

Sure, there are villains that come across as pretty stupid, petty, annoying etc., but even all that combined has never made me hate any one particular villain. I have to acknowledge that even though Beryl is a weak villain, in my mind, because she BECAME a villain solely out of jealousy, she still made an incredible baddie: I mean hell, she took down the Moon Kingdom and rose from no-prominence to Queen of the Dark Kingdom! She also followed through on her threats to not allow poor behavior: it was she who "dusted" Jadeite and Zoisite, not the Sailor Senshi. (And technically Nephrite got killed by Zoisite's youma in the anime, so he doesn't count for the Sailor Senshi, either...not that they'd want him to, what with Naru being hopelessly in love with him and all.)

So, who IS my least favorite villain? Well, all of the seasons I've talked about in the other days of this meme so far have pretty memorable villains who are badass in their own way. And then there's SuperS, the notorious fourth season of Sailor Moon that seems to be more about Chibi Moon than about the titular character. A lot of fans dislike it for that very reason; I've always been a little ambivalent about it, but I guess in the grand scheme of things, it IS the weakest season.

You've got villains who are searching "in dreams" for the Pegasus, because he's got the Golden Crystal on his horn (I think...in the manga, the Golden Crystal was inside Mamoru, since HE'S THE GUARDIAN OF PLANET EARTH, not some winged horse) and it's super-powerful, and like all villains, they want to destroy/take over the Earth or whatever. The villains are somewhat fragmented: you've got the Amazon Trio, which is comprised of a transformed fish, tiger, and hawk, and they're vaguely amusing and have a downright bizarre fashion sense. There's the Amazon Quartet, with their wild hair and fun acrobatics--in the anime, they're healed at the end of the season the same way the Four Sisters were in R, and in the manga, they turn out to be Chibiusa's own Sailor Team! And of course, you can never hold it against a Senshi (or a would-be Senshi) for getting brainwashed and turned into a villain, can you? Nope, never. Not even with the next season's villains, but that's another story (hehe, I made a joke!)....

The biggest bads of SuperS are Zirconia, this androgynous-looking gray garbage bag with a shower cap on, and Nehellenia, this "Queen" of who-knows-what. I think her motivations were clearer in the manga than they were in the anime; in the anime, I believe she was another "misunderstood byproduct of war" or something, because she was really a child? And she thought she was the exiled Queen of the dark side of the Moon Kingdom (dead moon?) and...I don't know, it was weird. Maybe she was one of those Queens who wanted to stay "young forever?"

Like all Sailor Moon seasons/arcs, SuperS has a BIGGER bad, the force behind the baddest bad: the first had Metallia, the second had Wiseman/Death Phantom, the third had Master Pharaoh 90, and SuperS has Zirconia/Nehellenia in one...sort of smashed-together-badness. Anyway, they're all forms of the same evil, Chaos, but the fact that there wasn't something behind Nehellenia, and that Zirconia was just a facet (I believe) of her own nightmare of growing old made that revelation seem not-as-cool. The other villains? Sure, frightening as hell to hear that they're all the same villain, just different sides of them, and guess what?! They're all a counter-balance to Sailor Moon, the Light of Hope, the brightest Star Seed/Sailor Crystal in the galaxy! So they will always exist! No peace! No end to the fighting or the Sailor Wars...ever! Aaah!

That's a much more powerful revelation than "I'm here to take revenge on you because I want to be pretty forever~!" Even Beryl's jealousy was rooted in more sense than that.

Okay, so I guess I do have a least favorite villain then. It's definitely Nehellenia.
