I heartily endorse Sailor Moon! But I recommend, as with CCS, getting the original with subs first, rather than starting with the dub. Some of the early Season 1-2 dubs of SM done by DiC actually kind of grew on me, and had their own charm, but you can't get those voices with the actual story as it was meant to be seen.
And believe it or not, huge as SM is, I think it's failed to get re-licensed, so finding the actual DVDs may prove a challenge... but there are other sources (and possibly friends *wink wink* who might do a loan or somesuch).
Also, you're very right about Miaka. I never understood how people could dislike the main character of a show so much. She just happens to be more flawed than other heroines, but no more so than Usagi of Sailor Moon is, and in a different way than her own friend Yui Hongo is!
