I don't know what type of medical issues your grand-father has, but about two years before my grand-father passed (he had heart, liver,kidney, and eye problems due to diabetes), the doctor gave him a medication that made him kinda like a zombie - zoned out, passive, and forgetful. Is it possible the change in your grand-father is from a medication?
Either way, I know what you're going through and you have my heartfelt sympathy. I've never felt more helpless than when my own grand-father's life began to decline. *hugs*
