Skip*Beat!

I had a very strange dream this morning. I'm not sure what to blame it on, or even why I have to blame something. Maybe it's my inner Ebenezer Scrooge. :P Anyway, the dream was almost like a dream within a dream, because I dreamed (dreamt?) that I woke up in my bed, and noticed something WRONG about my room. The placement of my furniture, the mess being... not "MY" mess... oh, and the strange white guy sitting in my computer desk chair, clicking away at MY computer.
GWAH?
I started screaming my head off, and the guy eventually got me to shut up by saying he wasn't a pervert, be calm, and by the way, this house is being gutted. What? He just gestured to look outside my room, and when I did, I saw a family of Mexicans (not trying to be racist or anything here, but it's what they were) literally GUTTING the house. Well, they were taking everything that made it "the Sweet house" and were making it look like their own house instead-- except bigger. I saw pictures tacked to the walls, kids running around everywhere... and all of the stuff that I didn't even know I cared about/took for granted being taken away and disposed of. And I felt so helpless, like I couldn't do anything about it, because I knew... it was "law" or something.
I asked where my grandparents were; I thought they were up in Seattle visiting Sally and Co. (for the high holidays?) but then something told me that's not where they were, or they had been there, but something had happened. The white guy only responded, 'They've been taken care of,' which scared the bejeezus out of me, because I thought they'd been killed. I didn't know what would happen to me... and that's when I woke up.
Seriously, I hate dreams that don't have an ending. At least in nightmares, you wake up when you get to the worst part: you die, someone you love dies, something like that. But what kind of a dream/nightmare was this?
I imagine it was partially influenced by the fact that I did a mini-marathon of "Lois and Clark" season 3 episodes last night, because the whole wedding/clone/amnesia fiasco just had me watching and watching, even though I remembered seeing those episodes before, first on TV years ago, and then from downloads, before anyone knew S3 was even going to be released on DVD. *shrug*
Have a new manga addiction which I already mentioned-- Skip*Beat. The "heroine" Kyouko Mogami follows her childhood "friend" and crush Sho Fuwa to Tokyo. Sho is the heir to a wealthy chain of Japanese inns, but he doesn't want to be "stuck behind the shadow of a woman" (whoever he marries, the proprietess of the inn is the "real star"), so he runs away right after graduating junior high, with the hopes of becoming a star. Kyouko gets two jobs, never goes to senior high school, and basically does everything for Sho, even though he's arrogant, rude, demanding, and never really shows up at the home.
One day, they both see a program on TV where Sho's rival, the sexy, dark-haired actor Ren Tsuruga is voted ther #1 sexiest man and most popular celebrity, and Sho goes storming out. Kyouko calls to apologize, but as usual, Sho never calls back. In a vain attempt to win him over, or at least get him to come home, Kyouko goes to a life performance of his, pretending to have a delivery for him from Moz Burger. She overhears Sho talking to his sexy manager that the only reason why Sho brought Kyouko to Tokyo is because he's been pampered his whole life, and he doesn't know how to take care of himself. His manager accuses him of being cruel, and making HER take care of him instead, but Sho doesn't care-- he says he'll just send Kyouko back to Kyoto. Problem is, Kyouko ran away to be with Sho, thinking he truly needed her. When he told his mother that he didn't want to marry "a plain, boring girl" from around there, he was actually talking about Kyouko-- the girl whom his parents wanted him to marry (because of some unspecified parental situation, she spent lots of time with the Fuwa family, and did her best to please them as a helper at the inn. She learned some pretty exotic techniques to please the customers, but Sho never noticed).
Kyouko suddenly realizes that she's been noble and self-sacrificing all this time, while Sho has just exploited her. The "locked box" of Kyouko's inner demons comes out, and she angrily throws Sho's "special delivery" at his face. But instead of crying like he expected her to, Kyouko threatens to have her revenge-- but she's taken out by security before she can. Sho says if she wants her revenge, she should join the (show) business. So Kyouko cancels the lease on the expensive apartment she shared with Sho, sells all her personal belongings except one, and gets a total makeover, determined to become a star. But she doesn't have any real interest in being a celebrity, and talent scouts never notice her. But she goes to LME agency and demands a meeting-- but while the receptionist tries to explain to her that she needs to make an appointment, one of the "agency bigwigs" Mr. Sawara (the head of the "Talento" section) notices her.
He meets with her, but because Kyouko has no real interest in being a celebrity other than to get revenge, Sawara has her thrown out-- but not before she throws a fit that Ren Tsuruga, part of the LME agency, sees. But instead of being ecstatic to see him, as most girls are, she's depressed-- and Sawara is surprised. In Kyouko's mind, any rival of Sho's was someone for her to hate, but now that she's trying to beat Sho at his own game, so her hatred of Ren means nothing. But he was still a jerk to her, so she doesn't like him (much) from the get-go. But Kyouko still doesn't leave-- she camps out in front of the agency for hours and hours-- and both Ren and Sawara notice.
Come 10pm, she's gone-- but only because she's staked out the back exit. Sawara tells her point blank that her becoming a celebrity is impossible, but she stalks him home-- for four days straight, making his life miserable. At last, he agrees to see her, and gives her an application for an upcoming audition. She bumps into Ren Tsuruga on the way out, and he tells her that she'll need more than guts to get through the application process-- increasing Kyouko's hatred of him. But what baffles her is how he goes from rude to handsome and sweet in one moment; he smiles while telling her that at least she can try, and have her ego shattered when she doesn't make it, especially with her reasoning (to get revenge).
Kyouko prepares for the audition in five days as best she can, but when she gets there, there are tons of pretty, talented girls. One of them, Kanae Kotonami, is beautiful, with the amazing talent to memorize anything she reads within seconds. She aims to be an actor, but she's got a bad attitude from the get-go, dragging a child around the waiting room and tossing her into Kyouko, whom she thinks is her mother (she's not. Kyouko was just sewing a voodoo doll, and Kanae thinks that sewing = mother). But instead of comforting the little girl, who's in tears, Kyouko coldly stares at the girl and asks her if she thinks that women and children can always get what they want by crying. It startles the girl, and she stops crying... but no one knows who she is. When Kyouko goes in for her audition, the girl is peering in from the sidelines with a distinctly evil look on her face...
Kyouko's first test is a show of talent-- and while many of the other girls play instruments or dance, she decides to be unusual by showing off her secret skill of Katsura-muki, a specialized form of vegetable peeling that only professional, top Japanese chefs can do. She turns a daikon radish into a rose (a very large rose, or a cabbage, depending on how you look at it). She makes it past the first round, but the second round involves a reaction test-- a caller on a cell phone admits that he was selfish and egotistical (she thinks of Sho immediately), and that he slept with other women, but he was wrong... and can she make a fresh start with him? At first, Kyouko looks happy -in tears, just like Kanae was before her- but then she angrily throws the phone to the ground and says that she will never mean those words, and that "If sorry was enough, there'd be no need for HELL!" It's the performance no one expected, but the president of LME, formerly intrigued by Kyouko and smiling, is now making a horrible puppy face.
It's he that devised the test, a psychological test to gauge how much a potential celebrity has the necessity to love and be loved-- and thereby grow with the love of their fans. Since Kyouko is the one that lacks the most necessity, she fails-- but no matter what, Sawara and the president can't stop thinking about her. Kyouko realizes that she can "no longer feel" because of what Sho has done to her heart. Kyouko is about to give up on becoming a celebrity in revenge, but a talk with her boss at the restaurant where she works (Darumaya, presumably she quit working for Moz Burger; now she lives with the Darumaya owner's family while she tries to get a job and find a place) and he is angry at her for giving in so easily. The one treasure Kyouko DIDN'T sell was a gemstone that she believes can take away her sadness, and for the first time since Sho broke her heart, Kyouko cries. She still can't "feel," but she can express that feeling, and she can show passion through her determination.
Sawara, the president, and Kyouko all want to see her return to LME...
And, I'm already a Kyouko x Ren 'shipper. (Sho can burn in hell!!!) I've even got ideas for the pairing already. I might even WRITE them, because hell, there's no section for it at FFnet, I couldn't find any fics for it in the Misc. Anime/Manga section, and all the fanpages I've found so far seem to be in German! So... might as well. :D It kind of reminds me of "Wild Act," but without all the excess drama (so far). It seems pretty realistic, but fun!
Heh. I got paid to watch "Get Shorty" today. And I've only had one call so far... yay. :D
