azuriteThere were so many errors, I couldn't believe it. Why didn't they catch these errors when they were running in Shonen Jump? Or dare I say it-- maybe there were more, and they just neglected these? I find that hard to believe. Anyway, I just sent an email to Shonen Jump/Viz explaining the situation. See if you agree with me...
Okay Shonen Jump, I've about had it-- which is hard for me to say, considering I've been reading Viz comics since Viz' early days. When I heard Yu-Gi-Oh was being brought over, I was thrilled-- I started buying up all the graphic novels as they came out, and supporting Viz in whatever way I could afford.
Little things started getting to me, though. One was abruptly "changing the name" of the series just to put out Yu-Gi-Oh Duelist at the same time as the Memory (NOT MILLENNIUM!) World arc and presumably, not to confuse people. What, I wondered, was so wrong about releasing Volumes 8-31 at the same time as Volumes 32-38? All you'd have to do is include a note in the book or on the website indicating you're releasing them concurrently to speed it up-- otherwise it'll take till 2009 to release all 38 volumes!
But you know what? I can forgive that. It's okay. So are the translations of the names-- not using the accented characters for Yugi (Yuugi or Yûgi), Jonouchi (Jounouchi) and Ryo (Ryô, or better yet, Ryou). But using Maximillion Pegasus?! Wait a sec-- I thought this was the Yu-Gi-Oh manga brought to English-reading audiences in the most faithful way possible! What's with using dub names for characters? It's great to have them in the introduction panel with both names, so people watching the dub anime can figure out who's who (if they can't already tell by appearance), but... why? It makes no sense.
The same applies to the Duel Monsters/Magic & Wizards cards. I can understand telling people which cards have had their names changed from the manga to video games, the anime, or the real card game, but why substitute the original names Takahashi came up with to go along with the TCG? You've already got the guide in the back that says which cards are which. Case in point: Crawling Dragon #2. I know that of all the Yu-Gi-Oh cards I've encountered, not one in the manga or the Japanese TCG has any NUMBERS after it. I don't know why Konami felt possessed to add numbers and change names the way they did-- there's always a better way to go about it. Besides, in your own guide you call it the Corpse-Devouring Dragon. If that's too gruesome, then why not the Carrion Dragon, as Ryuzaki himself calls it? It sounds much better than "Crawling Dragon #2," at any rate.
The other thing is that text seems wildly off-center, particularly in "thought bubbles." The first one I found was on p. 19 of Duelist, Volume 3, when Ryuzaki is looking at Mai. His text is practically falling out of the bubble, when if it were merely shifted to the left a bit, it would be perfectly within its constraints! The next ones are on p. 21 (Jounouchi thinking he'll gamble on the Time Wizard), p. 44 when Mai loses ("I lost! Me!" -- if the font were just a bit smaller, it would fit), p. 65 (all of Player Killer's text in the top half, plus Yugi's internal monologue-- if it were smaller, it would fit in the bubbles just fine), p. 66-67 (Yugi's internal monologue, again), p. 74 (Player Killer's last bit of thought at the bottom of the page could be shifted to the right more), p. 82 (Player Killer thinks "What kind of cards are they?" which is too high, but I also think it's the wrong text; the Player Killer already said "What kind of cards are they?" in the previous panel, and in the next panel, it doesn't make sense), p. 89 ("Swords of Revealing Light, Activate!" would have fit if it had been centered more toward the left and top), p. 105 ("Even after fusing together..." could be pushed to the top more, and "That's all! Just a bluff!" could be centered more toward the left, while "But just to be careful..." at the bottom could be shrunk a bit and moved more toward the top), p. 106 ("All you can think about..." could have been fit better in the speech bubble; it's too narrow as is), p. 109 (Player Killer's last thought bubbles are off-center and the rightmost one's text is too large), p. 114 ("I... I lost--!?" is too big for the bubble), p. 123 ("Friends...!!" could be pushed more to the left), p. 129 ("Mokuba left it..." could be less narrow), p. 132 ("Hmph" from Kaiba could be pushed more right so it's actually IN the thought bubble), p. 143 ("Millennium" is spelled wrong in the second reference, when Yugi notes that the Millennium Ring seems to be acting as a dowsing device; the bubble is also broken by a rounded-rectangle. The text could have been shrunk to fit the original shape), p. 168 ("The Flame Swordsman's..." could be shrunk to fit the bubble), p. 169 ("Not even Flame Swordsman..." could be moved up and left, with shrunken text, to better fit the bubble and still be readable), p. 171 ("Think you're so smart..." could be moved more up and to the left) and finally, p. 200 ("I knew it!" could be shrunk and moved more up and left to fit).
At one point, the gang calls Ryou "Bakura" (which is appropriate, it's what they've always called him, and will continue to call him), but when Jounouchi is defeated by Kaiba (p. 188) Jounouchi calls him not Ryou, but RYU!? Big glaring error there.
On p. 62, there's another inconsistency with the naming of the cards-- Yami no Yugi (Dark Yugi) calls the Celtic Guardian "Celtic Elf." He's either Celtic Guardian or Elf Soldier, not some weird fusion of both. If you guys can get the name right in your "conversion" guide in the back of the manga, you should try and get it right in the actual text, too!
Also, what's up with the text on the Spellbinding Circle? The text says that a monster equipped with it loses 700 ATK points, but it says nothing of preventing the equipped monster from not attacking. (And this is more toward Takahashi than the translators, but wouldn't the Reaper be able to destroy the Spellbinding Circle, since it *is* a trap?) I'm also wondering why the Swords of Revealing Light have text that says it's a Spell Card, but the Spellbinding Circle doesn't have text that says it's a Trap Card (even though it's implied from context).
More strange-ness with cards:
-p.104, Player Killer says "Gaia the Dragon Rider" when according to you guys, it's "Gaia the Dragon Champion."
-p.161, wasn't Battle Ox called "Minotaurus" in previous volumes of Yu-Gi-Oh? Why change the name? Same goes for "Mystic Horseman," who was originally Centaurus)
-p.170, why doesn't Polymerization (Fusion) have any card text? Did the original image not have any?
I'm glad Viz goes above and beyond the call of duty translating Yu-Gi-Oh, but this volume disappointed me, because after seeing what Viz and Shonen Jump can do, I'm well aware that it could have been done better. I'm hoping for a second edition reprint in the future that will correct the errors and off-center text.
Keep up the good work though-- something is always better than nothing!
Hmm, I know I have to make one more Japan post, plus catch up on some recent events...
For starters, Scott and I got into a sort of tiff again. We never really have fights, per se, except for that one time just before he left for Thailand... anyway, this time it was because the "thrill" was gone. I asked him what I could do to bring it back, and he had no answer.
It seemed to be another case of FIMS-- Foot in Mouth Syndrome. Ranma Saotome's got it, I have sporadic outbursts of it, and Scott's got it, too. Sometimes we both just say things without thinking them over, or realizing the consequences. Like today, Scott was going to Brett's house to drop off a birthday present and hang out for a while, and somehow our brief conversation turned into an "I don't have a sense of humor, and how can I possibly tell when people are trying to be funny" thing. I take things too personally, and when I try to be funny, it's not funny, and when other people try to be funny, it tends to piss me off.
Let me ask you this: is there any humor in someone saying (more like threatening) to cut your hair off? My Grandpa said that the other day, and I didn't find it the least bit funny. It really hurt my feelings, and I thought I said as much, but maybe not-- once again I got chastised for "not having a sense of humor." Same goes with Scott, who at least KNOWS he says things without thinking, but he doesn't seem to bother and try to stop himself. And I can't always say for sure that I will 100% be able to say "Hey, that hurt my feelings, because _____ and could you not do that again?" because sometimes, what people say is so hurtful I just react to it without thinking. It's the same thing we're both dealing with, really.
Dad says I've always been a serious sort of girl, and no one's ever seemed to outright dislike or have a problem with me due to my supposed lack of humor. I still have great friends, family I get along with, and so on. Yet Grandpa insists I won't make it in "the real world" without a sense of humor. -_-; What am I supposed to do, grow a Chia Humor? S-S-Sense of humor, cha cha cha!
It just bums me out, is all. Words are a very tricky thing.
Well, there is a bright side to this cloud-- yesterday Eva came here from UCLA, and we spent the day hanging out together and shopping-- now there's something I haven't done in ages! It felt great! -_-; Maybe that's also because I ended up being the one spending the most money, too... X_X I kind of went crazy despite the fact that I'm so limited on funds (then again, it's almost my birthday, so I do feel somewhat justified). I got away with:
* Amy Brown's Art book of faeries
* A new skirt by Bisou Bisou
* Some Star Wars pillowcases for Scott (I'm such a nice girl...)
* A huge burrito that unexpectedly had melted cheese and sour cream drizzled all over it
* Hana Yori Dango/Boys Over Flowers #10 (I still need Vols. 8 and 9!)
* The Tarot Cafe, Volume #1 (I love it!)
* A smoothie I split with Eva that made me all giggly-high
...and I think that's it, but wow! Successful shopping! It was teh fun. We later met Scott outside the Apple Store, and then after hunting for some pics with me as Anzu at Cosplay.com (booyah! I gotta go save those...), Erin who, as usual, stopped by to do her laundry, was nice enough to drive Eva back to UCLA.
So that's it for right now-- I'm partially done scanlating "Priest Seto Saves The Day" from WHITE KINGDOM, and if anyone else is good at translating furigana-less kanji, let me know-- because I can't translate the last few bubbles to save my life, and it sucks royally. There's also another funny one at the end when everyone's getting measured for their height, and Yugi makes a vain attempt to beat Jounouchi's height... *grin* I wonder how...?
