This is entirely [livejournal.com profile] rhapsody_dragon's fault, because she referred me to the clear and helpful tutorial by [livejournal.com profile] pamelajoy, who happened to blog all about this and showed off her iPod order...

So here's how it works:
(1) Go to freeiPods.com
(2) Pick the size/color of iPod you want
(3) Sign up by adding your info-- it doesn't include credit card information or spam or anything like that.
(4) Choose one of their 10+ offers-- I picked "The Literary Guild," which hacks $$$ off publisher's prices for books (who knows, maybe even HP6!) and ships them to you for super cheap! The first two books are only $4!
(5) Once you complete that offer (in my case, get the books), make sure to sign up 5 friends to do the same. When everyone has signed up for offers, you get a free iPod!

The FAQs:
(1) Yes, it's free. Some of the affiliate offers aren't, like the Literary Club, but in which case they're extremely cheap, and often for something good, like books, pet chews, student loan information, debt consolidation, etc.
(2) No, it's not instant. You have to wait for the offer order to complete, and then get 5 people to sign up and complete their offers. The more people you get, the speedier your iPod will come, because more people = more likely to do their offers in a single sitting.

Now, if you know me at all, you know the following:
(1) I do not lie.
(2) I get very excited about all sorts of things.

With these in mind, Get a free iPod!! Oh yes, I'll also be adding this link to my info page, my journal layout (still needs help... what the heck is wrong with this thing?! Should I just start over again...?) and everywhere else I can. Help me out, and I'll help YOU out!

Once again, it's totally legit! GO FOR IT!

I was actually at that site just the other day, but I declined their offer. I stopped because I could see all too clearly why they did what they did.
See, those people are in the business of selling personal information. Being in the research business myself, I know just how valuable that kind of information can be. It sells for quite a bit if it can be supplemented with other data. Other data like, sy... user preferences? That's why it made you choose yes or no to all those ads. Now they have your name, address, phone number and basic consumer habits. They also know you have a thing for stylish new technology.
The bottom line is: They wouldn't be giving away iPods if it wasn't profitable. And personal information can be a very lucrative business.

You now have an iPod, but they have you.
Fair trade?

Indeed personal infomation, the marketer's dream. Blogs are actually under attack nowadays. People are wondering if it's ethical to get marketing data from people's personal blogs. On one hand there's no better information than someone's own personal thoughts on the other, is it right to use that data for profit.
