The Animanga Update
Nov. 14th, 2004 05:11 pmMixed bag of nuts
Okay, so I've returned from UCLA and hanging out with Eva... it's actually a long ride getting there from Hollywood, and it's pretty easy to get lost over there. In a nutshell, you need a car to get around in LA-- everything's super-sized.
Eva's lucky-- her dorm rooms at De Neve Plaza are exactly like a Hilton hotel room-- side bathroom, plush carpet, polished mahogany-colored doors... she's got it good. If only all dorm life were that nice... It's a bit small, but cozy in that same sense. Needs more color, though. =P
After picking Eva up (and surprising her by actually meeting her at the door, instead of downstairs), we headed to Little Tokyo, some distance away. Of course, we hit traffic. When we finally got there, I shelled out $3.50 for the after-5pm all-day parking, and we walked around-- at first, looking for a bathroom (found it, finally-- and we also spotted a look-alike Kenny, too!), and then for a place to eat. We settled on a Chinese food Sports Bar (yeah, I know it doesn't make much sense), where Scott had beef with tomatoes, I had a coke, Eva had a Boba drink, and we split some veggie egg rolls. When it came down to it though, I paid for that too... (Truthfully, it was the right thing to do, even if my wallet is going to hate me later). It wasn't bad, all in all.
Then we finally headed back to the square where Kinokuniya books was-- over on Astronaut Ellison S. Onizuka Drive (what a mouthful, ne?). It was actually laid out very oddly, with the comics spread out over several sections, so I had to get some help to find the Shounen section-- for Yu-Gi-Oh, of course. When I finally find it, I scored the last volume 38, but there was no 37!! ;_; Augh! But they did have a bucketload of other Yu-Gi-Oh stuff, including the Official Japanese card guide, and several other books whose titles I couldn't translate. No art-book style compilations though (I did see the Arina Tanemura artbook for only $22 or so, but I didn't get it).
So that'show Naoko did it...
If you were at all curious how Naoko Takeuchi took the original 18 volumes of Sailormoon and compressed them into 12 when she claimed to be redoing art and ADDING scenes, then the answer is simple-- she took out all the short stories. But so you (the fans) wouldn't complain of getting shafted, she's compiling all the short stories, starting with Chibiusa's Picture Diaries into a new manga form. The covers are as follows (visuals):
1 - Sailor Moon
2 - Sailor Mercury
3 - Sailor Mars
4 - Sailor Jupiter
5 - Sailor Venus
6 - Sailor Chibimoon
7 - Sailor Uranus
8 - Sailor Neptune
9 - Sailor Pluto
10 - Sailor Saturn
11 - Chibi Chibimoon
12 - Serenity, Chibimoon, Chibi Chibimoon
SS1 - Chibimoon and Chibi chibimoon
For the short story collection volume 1, the stickers include a "new manga style" version of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (the live action series) 'Princess Sailor Moon.' It looks cute! You can find that same image in the 'Naoko's Princess Room' of the official Sailor Moon webpage, the Sailormoon Channel.
The short stories should be collected in about 2-3 volumes, though if Naoko decides to do additional stories (we can pray), then there may be one more.
Temptation comes in the most compact form...
This Kinokuniya actually had a massive collection of anime soundtracks, unlike the one in San Francisco. I was tempted not only by brand new ones (DJ Moon, among several other live-action Sailormoon soundtracks) but also Star Ocean EX's official soundtrack, Yu-Gi-Oh Sound Duel II, and many more... too bad they were all (bare minimum ) $31/ea! ;_;
It's not so 'Simple and Clean,' thank you very much...
I'm not sure about all Utada Hikaru's albums, but it turns out that the famous Kingdom Hearts theme song (which is, in turn, based off of Utada Hikaru's hit "Hikari" song) "Simple and Clean" was in fact, released on her COLORS single. And yes, it's in English, even if COLORS is not. But to sweeten the deal, the Simple and Clean you know from KH (and now I'm wondering if the Japanese KH actually used Hikari, or if it used Simple and Clean) is NOT the one on the COLORS single. It's the full-length version, as well as the PlanitB remix. And the PlanitB remix on the single is not 100% the same as the one from KH, even if it follows the melody (and words) pretty closely. If you'd like to hear them so you know what I'm talking about, give me a holler and I'll see what I can do for you.
(Oh, and by next week I should be getting a bunch of Utada's music videos, the COLORS one is definitely up there on the "trippy" scale, but it's my new favorite song.)
Cuz I'm a manga, manga, manga maniac...
And yes, I also picked up a covered version of Peach Girl 18, masochist to my wallet that I am. I was tempted also to get the now-semi-rare Fan book, hoping I could find the time to scanlate it, but... nah. I'm praying Tokyopop will translate and publish that, along with the Reverse Side stories. They are, after all, re-releasing Peach Girl in their "Authentic" format, though I doubt that will make up for their constant changing of the paper quality and text style. I still need Japanese Peach Girl Volumes 1-3. ;_;
SEX!
Now that I have your attention, I also scored the two newest volumes of "Wild Act," 8 and 9. And the drama and tension continues! The original conflict of Yuniko and Ryu possibly being related comes to a head when they come to Hollywood (the one thing that bugs me is how there is no signal at all when Yuniko is speaking English and when she's speaking Japanese, which makes scenes when people are confused by language all the more complicated). They also meet "Ryu #2," Ryu Gilliam- who, IMHO, think is Yuniko's real brother, and that the slutty producer claiming to be Ryu Eba's birth mother is a lying ho. =P We'll find out the truth presumably next month, when the tenth and final volume is released...
Rock, Roll, and Reviews
The occasional "fangirl" review is nice, but pointless. The review that expounds on what the reader liked, disliked, didn't expect etc. pleases me more. The concrit makes me take ficwriting seriously, open up my editor, and get to work. I'm a nitpicker. But I got a review for DAA that said they found some mistakes, but they couldn't remember where, and they don't really matter because they don't exactly impact the story. Que? This is why I need to send EVERYTHING to my betas, even though I think that's far too reliant on others and their schedules, not to mention ruining the potential for surprise. Anyway, tell me if you spot any errors, where they are, etc. so I can correct them ASAP.
Oh, and I believe I've just gotten my first "wannabe review." That is, a self-plug in the form of a review. -_-; Can everyone else say, "trés lame!"?
i have a kaiba ficcie too, with everyone else in the show (not everyone EVERYONE, but...) it's just randomness and humor. I was put up to it by my friends. nobody else wanted to write the story, so they made ME do it... T_T... It's called "A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning", under the filter YuGiOh
On a final note, Scott and I are working through some rather complicated times. We didn't have a fight, but it's more like these times when I just close myself off to him. I'm considering writing this big lengthy letter, but it might not be needed right now. Who knows, we'll see. I'll expound on all that later on.
Anime Experts, I need your assistance!
Okay, so Scott wants to become a bit more anime-ized, and know about the "must see" titles, songs, games, and so on. I already have a few things in mind, but I'd like some additional input from other anime fans. Basically, things you should at least KNOW about, even if you haven't seen it all/played it to the end/discovered the secret dungeon. For example, Neon Genesis Evangelion. Yes, it's trippy, but everyone who's anyone knows about it. Things like that. In return, Scott's going to make me a list of must-see movies to rent/score on DVD. Ah, Blockbuster will be my friend upon my return to SF...
Anyway, it's YAM TIME!
