RANT RANT RANT!
Oct. 1st, 2003 03:00 am:P Ignore this if you don't like Yu-Gi-Oh, I'm sorry, I gotta vent somewhere.
WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY THINKING!?!??!!
I knew I smelled a fish when I realized the names of the three God cards were Obelisk, Ra, and Slither (according to the American dub). Obelisk, while not a god, I can at least understand, since the Obelisk is an Egyptian monument-- like the Washington monument. Very imposing and all. Ra is the Egyptian All-God, god of the sun, and such... probably the best known. I wasn't sure about Slither though, since I was pretty sure no dragons existed in Egyptian myth. Then I read the Japanese episode translations, and here's why I'm confused-- they changed his name! From Osiris, God of the Dead! Osiris is supposed to be jackal headed, and maybe he is... but he sure looks like a dragon to me. But why in the seven hells did they change his name?
Odion/Rishid I can understand-- for a while, I thought Odion was the name of someone from Egyptian myth, but I guess not. But yeesh! The whole "Ishizu" Isis thing pisses me off, too. Can't you guys make up your mind-- whether to use the phonetic Japanese pronunciation ("Ishizu," "Namu") or not ("Marik," "Yugi") instead of changing names altogether (don't get me started...)!
Apparently (and I should have seen this coming) Duke Devlin's real name is Otogi, and he's not being dense with the whole Shizuka thing, he really DOES like her... thus there's an actual FEUD between him and Honda (Tristan) aboard the ship.
I also don't know why they changed the plot so much-- making Malik so power-hungry. It's obvious to me that he's got a yami-half, but whether his normal self is even in control (a'la Yugi) or not (a'la Bakura) is still a mystery. In any case, it's supposed to be that Malik (Marik, excuse me) is trying to get revenge on the Pharoah and prevent his reawakening/re-entrance into power and rule, as he thinks that the Pharoah was responsible for his father's death-- when in fact, it was his own yami self. As for Rishid/Odion, it turns out they've been raised together, hence the similar tattoos on Rishid's face and Malik's back. But Rishid isn't REALLY one of the family borne into the fate of protecting the pharoah-- and if he tries to use a God card, he'll be punished. That's what happened to everyone that attempted to take pictures of the cards or have them in any way; same with Pegasus. Turns out everyone's more interconnected than we thought...
The three god cards act in different ways; Ra is the combined attack and defense of the monsters sacrificed to summon it. In other words, you really want to sacrifice high-level monsters (like 3 blue-eyes white dragons...?) before summoning Ra, so he can just WIPE the board with his power. Osiris/Slither is the number of cards in the holder's hand multiplied by 1000, hence his card saying X000 for both attack and defense. That's its biggest weakness and its strength; that was all gone into by Yugi and Kaiba though, in the episode with the pierced Rare Hunter, Strings. Finally, Obelisk is the weird one out of the bunch-- he's only got 4000 attack and defense. It doesn't seem like much to me, but I guess for only 3 sacrifices, it's pretty damn good, since 1 attack would clear anyone's life points entirely, assuming they've stayed at the set 4000. o_O
It also looks as though Rishid cares for Malik a lot, despite Malik's bad attitude. I think he lost control of his yami self a long time ago, when the family tattoo was applied to his back (with a heated knife, no less!) -- Rishid did the same to his face, and since the secrets of the memories of the pharoah are not supposed to be so blatantly revealed, this is why Rishid always wears the hood and stays in the shadows. ;P
And you thought Malik was already an ass... turns out he's been keeping his yami self in check all this time, because Rishid's gesture of tattooing HIS face kept the really evil Malik behind closed doors... Yami Malik must have escaped once to kill his father though, as revenge for the pain inflicted on him while tattooing him with the pharoah's destiny... and being branded, pretty much for life, for that fate.
~_~ Blargh, must get sleep...
*snicker* But not for a while now. Hehe, I love this line:
It was one of the simple facts of life, just like he was a boy, Anzu was a girl, and Wheeler was a Chihuahua. (okay, so it should say 'Jounouchi' instead of Wheeler, since this *is* the Japanese version...)
