30 Day Sailor Moon meme...Day 4
It's that time of day again, time for the 30 Day Sailor Moon Meme, brought to you by Sailor Failures on Tumblr.
I suppose I'm a sheep in this regard, because...Rei and Usagi, duh! Of course, they have a totally different "friendship" in the anime than they do in the manga.
In the anime, which I saw first (dub), Raye and Serena seemed like friendly rivals, in a way...with Serena as a reluctant participant. No matter what form of canon Sailor Moon's in, part of Usagi/Serena's personality is that she wants to be friends with everyone, and it's almost sad how naive she is, and how impossible it is for her to accept that there can be BAD people out there.
Rei/Raye is the one who already knows it, somehow (likely from witnessing her mother's death and having her father walk away and pursue his own life), and she's concurrently frustrated with and desperate to help Usagi/Serena. As a result of these completely conflicting viewpoints, they clash a lot. In the anime, it's in the form of your typical teenage banter, with Rei/Raye making jokes about Usagi/Serena's eating habits, hairstyle, leadership ability, etc. But while on the one hand, some of the stuff she says IS cruel, most people (except Usagi/Serena herself, of course) can see right through it: Rei/Raye just wants to help her friend(s).
In the manga, Rei is this sophisticated would-be princess. She's more grace and glamour than she is "spitfire," and the friendship is very different a result. Rei becomes someone than Usagi idolizes, in a way, but Usagi can't change who she herself is: a girl who likes sleeping, sweets, and generally having a good time, versus devoting oneself to study (of any kind)! I still think Rei is one of Usagi's most loyal friends, but the feeling of "best friend" is more spread out across all the girls in the manga, and Rei appears to have good friendships with others, too...like Minako.
Enter PGSM. Usagi and Rei have a TOTALLY different friendship in PGSM, but it's still got hints of the one we know from both the anime and the manga. There's banter, but there's idolizing, too. Rei is sophisticated and glamorous, but closed-off: she has no apparent interest in making friends, and is an extremely reluctant Sailor Senshi. Rei has a much more interesting relationship with Minako, mainly because of all the Inner Senshi, I think Minako's the one that got the biggest makeover from anime/manga to live action canon, and that has ripple effects for all the other girls.
I've always been able to see lots of myself in both Rei/Raye and Usagi/Serena, so I guess it makes sense that I find them the best friendship. There don't seem to be any pretenses: Rei/Raye is honest with Usagi/Serena, and Usagi/Serena is completely herself around Rei/Raye, no matter how much it irritates her!
This is not to say there aren't any other great friendships in Sailor Moon: Ami and Usagi have a cute one, as do Makoto and Minako, the already-mentioned Minako and Rei, Chibiusa and Setsuna, Chibiusa and Hotaru...and who's to say friendships can only involve two people? I actually think the entire cast presents a great example of how very different people can come together and be friends.
