Whar?
Over the past few days, I've been getting mysterious emails from HTMLGear's guestbook notification service, saying I have new guestbook notices on a site that I used to have (that has been defunct for years; when you try to search for it via Yahoo! *OR* Google, you won't come up with anything).
I couldn't remember my login for the site (which is affiliated with Tripod and Angelfire, neither of which I ever maintained a site with-- for long), and I was trying every possible combination. Lycos doesn't have a password reminder service, so I was stuck trying every username and password combination I could think of.
AT LAST I got it and I checked the settings... and they pointed to a site that does not exist. I wondered how the messages could be posted without a site (after all, no site means no "Sign my Guestbook" link), so I checked the notices... and of course, they're from bots.
What a waste of time! I liked the GuestGear service when I used it, but since I have my own domain, I guess there's no point anymore. I shouldn't have to put up with their limited capabilities and adverts when I can just create my own Guestbook, or use a customizable script from somewhere. I'd really like to get rid of ALL of my old services, but to trash my old Yahoo! services would mean the end of those emails... and I don't know whether I'm really up to changing EVERY SINGLE place I receive email from to my new email address (even though GMail can handle the flux of messages).
Anyway, I've found out how to delete entire GuestGears (by going into the Gear Manager), and so I'm going through all these old links, just for nostalgia's sake.
1 - First Love Fics: defunct. Used to be the site of Alicia Blade (and Company)'s famous first-season Sailor Moon Usagi x Mamoru fics. From what I've heard nowadays, Alicia handed her site over to PuD (...no comment) and First Love is no more. In any case, the current URL goes to a Japanese would-be search engine... you know, one of those SQUATTER pages.
2 - A Sailor Moon Romance: formerly hosted at moonromance.com, up until a squatter site from Thailand (or Taiwan, I can't remember which) bought the domain. So ASMR moved to .net, and it's been there ever since. I used to go to this archive all the time, but I fell out of the Sailor Moon fandom and haven't been there in a long while. Many of my old (and hideous) Sailor Moon fics are still there; I'd certainly like to revise them or have the guts to take them down once and for all. There are a few I still like the idea of, though... In any case, it doesn't look like the main site's been updated since December 2005!
3 - Carry On Dancing: JLaLa's Sailor Moon Fanfiction Archive amazingly still active, though it doesn't look as though it's been updated in 4+ years. JLaLa was one of my very first online "onee-chans," and amazingly, she even lived close to me, in Daly City! Back when pagers were new, she even paged me once! Alas, we lost touch, but I always liked her writing. She was also extremely helpful to me, and allowed me to have the courage to post my own works.
4 - MareSerenitatis.com: Once an Usagi x Mamoru fanfic archive, now just a squatter search site. This is the domain I would have bought for myself, if I'd had any money or web know-how back when I managed Mare Serenitatis (aka Sea of Serenity) as my primary website. That was back when I was so DEEP into Sailor Moon that my life practically revolved around it, and everything about it. Alas, my own SM site has been dead for a while, but I'm hoping to revive it once eFiction 3 comes out and I can make a multi-fandom archive (aka Epiphany).
5 - Stef's old website?: I'm not sure if this belongs/belonged to
kitesareevil, but it was supposedly a fic archive. I doubt she hosts there anymore (if it was hers), but AT&T is just telling me it's blocked anyway-- as if there's content there, but I'm not allowed to see it for whatever reason. *shrug* Who knows?
6 - SenshiStar: Still online, though it hasn't been updated in 6 years. Why did I like this site? I usually detest anything designed using a free website's generators (i.e. GeoCities' PageBuilder or HomeSite, the respective equivalents from Tripod, Angelfire, the domain formerly known as Xoom, etc.), and the reason why is plain on this site-- it's plain, tacky, and when you try to click on any of the links (or when I do, anyway), you see the raw HTML instead of the actual page.
7 - LoveAngel's Romance Page: A dead Angelfire page, but it's probably a good thing; anyone tha uses eLitE cAPiTaLS in their website name isn't someone whose web content I probably want to be bookmarking.
8 - DarkJedi's Sailor Moon Page: Laughable because it's in TWO versions, Internet Explorer and Netscape. That should give you an idea of how old this page is. But it's still online, and relatively amusing for all the dub info (mixed with original Japanese info, of course) that it presents. This is especially true for the "Outer Scouts" info, because back in the day, us dubbies had much conflicting information about the true names and powers of senshi such as Pluto, Saturn, Neptune, etc. On this page, Pluto's name is "Trista" (from the Irwin doll line, I believe), and she supposedly wants to be a fashion designer. Now where did that idea come from? AFAIK, doesn't Setsuna work at a university as a research assistant or something? Interestingly, this page does have a section on Common Sailor Moon CCG cards owned by "DarkJedi." I have many of the Sailor Moon CCG cards, but I never found anyone to play them with. I suppose it's because I was spoiled on Yu-Gi-Oh, which needed no Mana or counters (unless you chose to use them for particular cards/deck strategies). Trying to play any other game after that is sort of complicated for me...
9 - Some sort of information site...:The Lycos site is still up, but it redirects to a domain which is apparently no longer active (and not even squatted on, which is unusual!). I have no idea what was here, except that it was a site that had "information about the Sailor Senshi and more."
10 - The Dark Kingdom At Its Best: The site's no longer there, but a personalized 404 that screams "I'm a slash fan" without really screaming it is there. I have a vague recollection of this site being a pretty good resource when it came to Dark Kingdom information and goodies (including CGs from the video games, which are notoriously hard to find, and doujinshi, which can be difficult depending on the content or circle). Alas, poor Zoisite84, I knew him... IN AMERICA! :P
11 - Another World: The original was on Angelfire, which redirected to a domain, which redirected to GeoCities. Ah, some people just get stuck on their old favorites. Still, the site's not only up, it looks active and relatively up-to-date. It's a Sailor Moon fanfic archive dedicated to AU stories only.
12 - SailorMoonFanfic.com: Probably one of the most coveted domains that ever was. The site's still up, but it looks about as tacky as a Lisa Frank folder. There are SO many button-banner links on the homepage alone... plus the sparkling pink background makes my eyes sore. It's not the pinnacle of classy web design, but it does have a lot to offer-- if you're good at navigating.
Ah, nostalgia. One Gear down, several more to go. Maybe I ought to just take the high-road and start getting rid of these old things.
I'm not sure whether any of this has been updated/revised/removed since I last updated the list, but back in the day, some of my favorite fics included...
- "Guardian Angel" by ManaChan (Ranma 1/2)
- "The Truth", "Summer's End," and "Shared Blood" by Lazuli (Inuyasha)
- "Tsubasa" by Kei the Incarnadine Goddess (Inuyasha)
- "Spelling Not Required" by omni82 (Fushigi Yuugi)
- "Late" by Kayla Chavi (Inuyasha) - I actually ended up linking to Kayla's entire FFnet profile, because she wrote SO many things I enjoyed. :P
- "An Arranged Marriage" by Silver (Ranma 1/2)
- "Circle of Trust" by Paradise Kiss (Peach Girl)
- "Turnabout is Fair Play" by Ookami-chan (Inuyasha) - Ookami-chan used to be a semi-onee-chan of mine back when I was active in Inuyasha-- and when Inuyasha was NEW. But then TIFP became sort of "the fic that never ends" and it became EXTREMELY lemony. It was a very original idea, but I don't think I ever finished it.
- "Inuyasha Learns To Jive" by Otaku-chan (Inuyasha) - One of THE MOST HILARIOUS FICS out there, especially for Inuyasha. I think "Spelling Not Required" came in a close second, if I remember correctly
- "Hearts of Ice" by Krista Perry (Ranma 1/2) - THE penultimate Ranma 1/2 fic. It's still a great read, even today, though KP is supposedly revising the whole damn thing. Of course, she's also a mom now, and had other projects (Utukkki). Still, she decided to stop RIGHT BEFORE THE LAST CHAPTER, so I'm angsting to know what happens next. Good thing she's got an LJ, right?
- "Forevermore" by Mia Jade (Inuyasha)
- "School Daze" by Clara (Inuyasha) - this was the fic that inspired my first "doujinfic" aka "Dream a Dream." Part of it is up, but since I never found out where Clara intended to go with SD (even though I had lots of catching up to do), I never finished it. Basically, it takes her general story idea (with permission, of course!) and removes the AU element. If you read the story, you'll understand how that can be fun and dark at the same time.
1 - The captions that never were - This site takes caps from the Inuyasha anime and gives them text link captions that suit the situation... alas, it's not really what was said in the anime, but it SHOULD have been. :}
2 - If the Ranma 1/2 characters had their own theme songs - Amazingly still active; it's a compilation of non-anime related songs suggested by others that fit to a particular character's behavior, attitude, or experiences. I suppose this was the predecessor to "fanmixes" like we see today; anyone wanting to do a total Ranma fanmix would find a good resource in this site. Actually, if you wanted to make a Ranma 1/2 character AMV, there are a lot of good ideas here. I wonder if "500 Miles" for Ryouga was suggested BEFORE or AFTER the fabulously famous AMV was made?
3 - Daigakusei no Ranma, Daigakusei no Ukyou - I read this before I was really old enough to appreciate it, though what I do remember of it was extremely well-written, plunking the Ranma 1/2 characters into a slightly more-modern college setting. Of course the character interactions are fantastic, and there's still mayhem... but it's great fun. Alas, it's done in script format (from what I can see of the
4 - Ranma is a Sailor Senshi!? - I think "Lines of Destiny" was one of the first fics that actually took advantage of the idea that there can be thousands or even millions of Sailor Senshi. Why not use characters also in Japan (after all, Sailor Moon and Co. have enough trouble with Tokyo's Minato-ku ward!) and make THEM Senshi? Well, apparently Ranma and Co. are... it's interesting to see the two universes mesh together. Alas, this concept is now as old as moldy bread.
5 - Calisto's Dedication to Ranma 1/2 - A not-so-perfect title for a rather amusing site, which collects the "top ten rejected lines" for each of the characters in the Ranma 1/2 series.
6 - Dynasty: A Ranma 1/2 Fanfiction. If "Hearts of Ice" is the penultimate Ranma fic, then this is definitely a close second. The page is one of the better design fanfic sites I've seen (and that was true 4 years ago too, when it was last updated). AFAIK, this fic is finished-- or at least "never going to be updated again," even if the story itself isn't done. I don't remember it well, but I'd probably like to re-read it. Or what's there of it. I just hope WDKY and my other planned fics don't go the way of this fic, getting forgotten... :P
7 - KaraOhki's Ranma 1/2 Fanfiction Pagoda - Another simple (and thankfully not too much of an eyesore) site featuring some great Ranma 1/2 fics. There's also some delicious fanart!
8 - Meant For Each Other - Do you remember when GeoShitties used to divide up domains by sections (Tokyo/Flats/5574), like things were addresses in a place? Depending on the content, it would get sorted into a different "region" and then have a particular address and "zone." Gosh, I don't even remember what mine (http://www.geocities.com/sailor_andromida) used to be! Tokyo/something/9974? I don't know. Is there a way to find out? Either way, this old-style Geocities site is a Ranma x Akane shrine. FYI, I'm one of those "canonite" couple fans. Usagi x Mamoru, Ranma x Akane, Kaname x Sousuke, and so on. Even if they never hooked up in canon, there are plenty of couples where you can tell they are MEANT to hook up... someday.
9 - Remi's Favorite Fanfiction Links - A collection of fanfiction links for the Ranma x Akane pairing. I think one of mine got mentioned on here once, but in retrospect, I wonder if it was even worthy (my "Phoenix Saga" fics, aka "Saisei" and "Strange Love." Saisei had the most potential, but it remains unfinished. Looking back, so many of my Ranma fics SUCKED... (Tonight is April Fool's, Peaches and Cream: The Togenkyo Island Adventures, etc.)
10 - Ayonge Darling's Site - Not the best-designed of sites, but it has a collection of Ranma 1/2 (and a few other fandoms, including Kenshin and DBZ, which I've never been really into) fics.
11 - Does anyone remember WebRings? They were a great way to find all sorts of site on the same subject as your site, or as a favorite site. This one is devoted to all things Peach Girl, which is actually quite difficult to find.
12 - And of course, when in doubt, check someone else's recommended links page. These are increasingly rare, as more people either don't Link Out or use affiliates/buttons instead.
13 - Momo Ai. I think Kiley x Momo was one of the first pairings I liked where I wasn't sure I really wanted to root for the "good guy." But Toji was such a gullible hack... Kiley certainly had his bad points (enough to make me want to strangle him, 2-D character that he is), but in the end, I liked him best-- and apparently, so did Miwa Ueda!
Note: Does anyone know where Scented Angels went? You know, that web "clique" (back when "cliques" were a GOOD thing) that allowed you to link to their site using scented // some scent here? It usually fit with the color scheme of the site, and I remember finding it fascinating, if difficult. It certainly made my mouth water... anyway, the link in my bookmarks (from ryuuzaki.net; I also checked aitenshi.nu, which is now a porn site, and ice-queen.net, which is a dead GoDaddy page) is deader than a doornail, so if anyone knows if they're still around, let me know! Ah, natsukashii~
Okay, done... I only have 4 Gears left, 3 of which are guestbooks which I need to review and finally delete, and the other is a poll on my old Digital Horizons site (remember,
staplerx?) about Reverse Racism.
Wow, talk about a trip through memory lane. Today was like that in general. For Christine's last EC group, she had clips of old TV shows that we both watched in America; since my group was also in Lavazza cafe, I ended up watching a few-- Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, JEM, Animaniacs, Tiny Toons... ah, those were the days.
I couldn't remember my login for the site (which is affiliated with Tripod and Angelfire, neither of which I ever maintained a site with-- for long), and I was trying every possible combination. Lycos doesn't have a password reminder service, so I was stuck trying every username and password combination I could think of.

To tell the truth, I never really knew where I was going with that fic, either. I had vague ideas for an ending, but I think part of the reason why I quit the fic was because it spun out of control.
And yummy. Ranma 1/2. ♥ If you ever want to read good Ranma fiction again, I would suggest Rod M's The More Things Change It's mostly Ryoga/Ukyo, but it's amazing and hilarious and really the fic that spawned my obsession for humor.
