There was swag
The last time I went to FanimeCon in San Jose, CA, I was pretty disappointed. Somehow, the coolness of the con that I'd loved, ever since I first went (what, back in 1999 or something?) had dimmed-- a lot. My friends, who'd started to work on staff, had nothing but complaints, and that didn't sound like the happy staff of a con that was supposed to be the best in California, probably the anime STATE of the union. I can't think of another state within the U.S. with more Japantowns, more cons, and more stores that actually cater to "otaku" like me.
Originally this year, I wanted to give the con another shot and go full out- get a hotel room, cosplay with some friends (as a tentacle monster, no less), see anime, check out the dealer's room, and maybe even sell/swap some things at the Swap Meet. Alas, it was not to be- Shaina's wedding fell on that same weekend, and I was relying on Baba and Grandpa paying for the tickets-- along with whatever date THEY wanted to leave. Plus, once I got accepted into the Disney college program, I knew I was committing myself to whatever dates they wanted me to work, so the more I gave them, the better off I'd be. I didn't want to risk getting fired over asking for a five-day streak, rather than just a three-day holiday weekend for a wedding I'd known about in advance. Weddings they'd cut me slack for, but I doubt they'd have done the same for an anime con.
What I ended up planning to do was get a one-day badge and JUST troll the dealer's room for stuff that I wanted/"needed" for cheap-- things like DVDs and random manga. What actually happened was even better-- I ran into my friends early on (Sean outside the main entrance, Jimbo and Christal at the place where Sean and I got lunch), met up with some more (Vince and Erwin), and then got to go to the Dealer's Room. The hours of the Dealer's Room seemed pretty short, but by making a mental map of just where to go (basically zig-zagging the aisles), I managed to get a lot of stuff:
* Seasons 4 and 6 of Ranma 1/2 anime (DVD Thinpaks)
* Tsubasa/xxxHolic movies
* Pretear anime series (Thinpak) -- This means I'll have to sell my Collector's Artbox with Vols. 1 and 2 of the DVDs! I could have bought the DVDs 3 and 4 if I'd remembered those were the ones I was missing, but it seemed much easier just to get the Thinpak. I've never really cared that much for collector's artboxes unless they came with soundtracks, posters, or figurines. I just did a comparison of the first DVD in each set, and YIKES! It looks like the Thinpak ones don't come with ANY of the special features! Admittedly, the special features on the full-size (box) DVD are just clean opening and closing animations, but there are also behind the anime interviews and production sketches. I could just rip those off the first two DVDs I have, but then I'd never know what's on the OTHER two volumes. >_> I think I might be better off selling the Thinpak set I just bought and buying the last two volumes of my collector's artbox. MOOOOU!
* The first 3 volumes of Kilala Princess-- which I picked up on a whim when I noticed the Disney princesses in a MANGA. Yes, a manga. Apparently it's another Disney collaboration, a bit in the vein of Kingdom Hearts (which is also a manga, but I'd rather play the game before picking up the manga), where a young girl travels to the worlds of the Disney Princesses to obtain treasures that turn into gems that sit on this magical tiara that belongs to a lost princess... The series is actually very good, though each volume is pretty short. I'm kinda addicted and want to read more!
* I also bought Vol. 7 of Ceres: Celestial Legend on DVD, unaware that I'd purchased a volume I already owned. So I went to find the original DVD versions, rather than the Collector's Editions, and got them on Amazon Marketplace for cheap. Looks I'll be selling that extra copy back, and then getting the 3 volumes I was missing (1, 2, and 8).
I think the idea of having a Dealer's Room/Swap Meet only badge might be good. My friends mentioned AX had something like that... and correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't AX at the Anaheim Convention Center, a scant few miles from my place of work? *wiggles eyebrows* Unless they moved it back to Long Beach, that is. I've never been to AX...
What made me especially happy wasn't what I got or not, but the fact that I set myself a budget ($200), a time limit (until 7 o'clock), and I managed to be both under budget and on time for getting from San Jose to Santa Cruz. In other words, everything went off without a hitch! Of course, now I have extra stuff to sell somehow, which sucks-- thinking I bought stuff I didn't really "need," but hopefully I can sell them back soon and make some money for myself even while I'm working at Disneyland (and working just to LIVE).

Does anyone know where I can get a boatload of pretty, non-animated THIN dividers aka separators aka horizontal rules? Preferably no more than 5 px thick, and nothing crazy, like flowers, blood, bomb fuses, etc. Since FanLib strips out horizontal rules, I'm replacing where they used to be with some colorful lines, but my current selection is pretty pithy.
I've been Googling for them, but I haven't found anything that isn't completely cheesy and reminiscent of when people were first getting on the Web and building sites, like, waaaay back in the mid-90s. :P All I care about are the separators, not matching backgrounds, buttons, etc. Help?
