I dunno, a lot of my friends have absolutely no problem with us shortening their family names for convenience. One of them, Aramaki Jun's nickname is just "Al" or "Aru" for Aramaki. Another uses "Terry" for Terada Shingo. There are other examples but I can't really think of them right now.

These things aren't set in stone, Meredith. Although I agree that when people with absolutely no knowledge of the language use it without thinking about it, that's when it's annoying/frustrating.
